Just wanted to note here that someone in the comments said the Owden Bevelers are cheap crap. I have not had the same experience with them, maybe they've improved them, who knows. But I didn't want to let this video sit here without noting their concerns. The other 2 Bevelers I listed always worked great for me as well, and they're from extremely reputable companies, where the Owden brand is fairly new. Anyways, just wanted to get that out of the way. I use the inexpensive Tandy bevelers, but for the thicker leathers that I want to be more rounded to start, I use a smaller beverler and take a little off at a time like cutting a curve on a flat piece of leather just translated to strips taken off the edge. As much as I'd like to upgrade to the professional versions, mostly because they're shiny and new, it not an expense I'm ready for as a hobbyist with side hustle projects.

Can you detail punches for making holes for stiching? Like the four in one from Tandy. Seems to be different punch types needle, hole, and slanted as well as spacing between holes. Some products have replaceable pins others not.

I haven't moved past the Crafttool Pro yet. Been thinking about it, but they work great. Even if they look terrible. I also made a beveller strop by cutting slots of various widths in a block of wood on my table saw and gluing strips of leather into each of them sticking out about 1/8 inch.

Project idea: make cavalry armor from the English Civil War of the 1640s. I'll be attempting to make a cuirass, but only enough leather coverage for the ribcage (front and back). Later attaching chainmail to finish the length. I'm asking for advice on the leather. Would it be better to do the pattern as one piece and drape it over me and attach on the sides, or 2 halves and attach on both shoulders and sides?

Got mine from Hobby Lobby and it did one cut before the miniscule little hole that the discarded leather is supposed to exit out of got jammed up.

I think i bled more from the absolute junk edge beveler i started with then anything else. I can still feel that pain. I didn't know any better. Learn to sharpen your tools and keep them sharp, it's actually relaxing to me to polish everything up some days

That first flat beveler you showed, if you hold it more flat upon the surface and don't roll your wrist it will make a more better edge. Not sure why but it be that way

The Tandy ones are great, I honestly am a bit of a visual nut so I wanted some bevelers that looked nice and worked well. I like the Owden but I've had some feedback that their build quality isn't that great so I'm actually already looking to find some high quality "expensive" bevelers to compare with the Owden.

These owden tools are cheap masquerading as premium. They look good but the ferrule falls off, and the metal they use is the worst. It is a knife you would only use for spoons and anything that doesn’t have a cutting edge. Is dulls extremely fast. On top of that, the tip is misshapen, unless you are lucky. Owden, L&Y, and no name Amazon brands are made in the same Chinese factory. Do not buy them. They are essentially copies of the premium European styled ones. There are good Chinese made ones like Wuta but are much pricier. PaloSantos is also amazing. Kemovan is a Chinese brand but they are made of premium materials and are high quality, yet decently priced. Don’t get these. The Tandy one use a much nicer steel, just need to be sharpened. With owden, even if you sharpen them they get dull in no time.

I haven't had that experience with these, but thanks for the feedback. I really like them, never had any issues with the edges. I wonder if they've gotten better since they first started making them.

@@DarkHorseWorkshop they might have better QC now or maybe you happened to receive well shaped bevelers but the steel is still the same. It’s an austenitic steel which you would never use for anything that needs an edge. On a kitchen sink, it’s great but not on bevelers. I only got them a few months ago though. Are you Canadian? If so, I would love to send you one or two bevelers made of DC53 or M390.

Ya I'm Canadian. Again, I haven't really noticed an issue with the edge but I sharpen a lot out of habbit so maybe I'm just always sharpening out of any issues.

When I first started, I didn't understand why they bevelled the edges of a piece of leather, removing such a small cross section. As such, many of my early pieces have 'mushroom' shaped slicked edges. Those bevelers you use now sure look sweet.
