This is the video I share the most, as so many students over focus on accent rather than clear communication. But I do know ESL learners with good British accents.
Pedro Belmont exactly the same what I believe...why we have to imitate natives speakers...? I like my accent..I wanna just be understood when I speak to someone..
Hi, Julio CD 76, you are absolutely right. Everyone wants to improve his English. Let me correct your tiny mistake: ...there are a lot of .... My next note: In my opinion, Christian deserves more personal comment so I would express your idea like this: Christian, there are a lot of teachers on RU-vid, but your honesty and sincerity are what make you one of the best teachers. Or: Christian, there are a lot of teachers on RU-vid your honesty and sincerity are what make you one of the best, though. My final remark: I really will be thankful to everyone, who helps me to improve my Englisch by correcting my comments whenever and wherever you come across to them.
Hi there. I’m an English teacher and I’m Italian. I have been studying English since I was 5 and despite having spent only 5 months in the UK in my whole life, I have a British accent that is a mix between a midland accent and Received Pronunciation. I don’t know why I completely lost my Italian accent, it just happened. I was told to be “weird” (in a good way) several times, so I guess you’re right, I’m an exception. What I try to teach my students is that correct pronunciation is only crucial in case there is a danger of misunderstanding and I was trained how to teach it by a wonderful teacher. I do agree that it’s hard to teach word stress, as it is usually taught in isolation, which is why I always teach pronunciation either of single sounds or of words in the chain of speech. Thank you very much for this, I am currently supporting your free education efforts and I do appreciate what you’re doing, you are source of inspiration. Ilaria from Italy
Hi Christian ! I'm an English teacher from Brazil. This video will definitely change the way I teach from now on. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us.
Chris, you don't know how helpful you are for us English learners, and for other languages as well. You're simply the most complete teacher anyone can found on RU-vid. Regards from Brazil
I'm Thailand fan follow you channel. Thank for teach English for everyone. i was inspired to learn English from you Hope to see you in Australia in the future.
When I was watching this video, I had a feeling that we "learneders of English" live is a matrix, a mix of feelings like happiness and frustration, because everything I tried to learn is not true or not useful. But at the end of the day, I need to thank you for the information.
Omg i can't believe it, i was watching your video and i undertood everyrhing you said, i love the way you explain it, thanks for foing this for all of us. I'm excited jajajajja i will keep practicing my english and watching your videos, thanks again.
Wow. You make it sound so easy when you talk about consistency and vowel sounds. That is so much easier said than done. Having been taught British pronunciation in school for 8 years, university for anther 2, having spent 12 months in Australia as a young adult and having consumed American music, TV and American culture in general for a lifetime (40years) that accomplishment is impossible. However, I'll just keep on chattering away anyway. Love the channel!
I am a firm believer of science. I must admit, the way you make this videos and the research you do is just awesome, very objective and concise information, this makes your channel special and, in my opinion, above others.
A cutting-edge lesson, truly inspirational. I'm an autodidact; I've started trying to translate the lyrics of my favourite songs, and I felt in love with English at first sight. Since then, I've made good progress, but pronunciation is still my weak spot. Now I feel more relaxed and confident about it. Many, many thanks!
You know something about your videos that I love is that you use the science to teach and that my friend make a difference with the rest of the youtubers who just give us good advice. I am fascinating with your job keep doing this amazing videos they are the best
Many thanks. lots of good stuff here. Anything that simplifies the teaching of English, and therefore the learning of English, gets a big tick from me.
That's awesome!!! I'm imressed. From the first second you were able to catch my attention. Wish you to be always inspired, what you are doing. It often helps us to improve. Great work, without exceptions!!!
As always very informative and well organized lesson. Christian my concern is fluency in language rather than accent. I want to keep my accent but I wish that my fluency will improve and I don’t have to think so much prior speaking or communicating .
Brilliant! It’s incredible to think about how many hours and how much money must be wasted on useless language lessons, when 99% of students just need to be able to communicate. And the more they communicate the better they will become at it.
Yes, communication is the prime reason for learning a language. I have gathered from all the people that teach, is to learn the equivalent of what is interesting and appeals to yourself. It's a waste of time to learn what is boring to you. !
One reason to imitate native speakers is that they speak their language in a more effortless way. By learning the features of native accent, I can learn how to speak their language more easily.
Hi, Canguro Teacher :-). I am happy to have found you. I am from Mexico, started to learn English a long time ago, but always trying to improve it in all the four skills. Reading, writing, understanding, and speaking. Pronunciation it has been one of my goals. Love your videos and will spread the word with my friends. I have also learned with Jennifer Jenkins' books. Cheers !!
iam from salta argentina i went to teaching trainning college public in salta there i had to achive to rp pronounciontion english accent so this video is very positive for me because i was very sad becuase i was not able to achieve to english accent
I''ve just realized of how many English teachers for Spanish speakers didn't fall in love with... Spanish, because when teaching about the stress, they fail to point out the difference of function it has in both languages, and I mean that even when they tell you the stressing is used to shift the focus within a phrase, they often doesn't seem to consciously notice how it's being used in Spanish, which leads to the difficulty to grasp the difference... and in turn to the importance of the aspiration in between words. In Spanish you speak without need to pause or aspire between words, because the stress is devoted exclusively to ensure the listener to make up the words separation intended by the speaker, even for sequences of syllables/phonemes that wouldn't be unique and could convey different words should they weren't stressed or if they were wrongly stressed (this is the leit motif for several jokes), and this happens automatically and unconsciously because it follows patterns disregarding the grammar and the semantics, akin the aspiration in English , and it's so internalized and natural that when we learn English we give for granted the same applies to it, and we fail to understand spoken English because of this as well.
I'm so imprisoning on your video that you are good at teaching English for many people. I hope learning English with you ..I wanna be the expert English teacher too. Thank you so much
Christian , sei veramente bravo! Io non capisco molto l'inglese ma le tue lezioni le comprendo abbastanza! La tua pronuncia e i vocaboli che usi sono molto comprensibili!
An accent can be modified by improving our pronunciation, however, this requires a lot of hard work and practice. Let's not mix accent and voice though. If you want to change your accent, put one on the way actors do and stick with it but I will tell you this, it's a huge commitment of every day mental and physical hard work. It's doable to imitate or shadowing an accent but to keep up with it and make it your own is another story. Christian is right, an accent cannot be changed, your pronunciation can change which will modify the way you sound but that's all.
I don't me import with accent, I just would like get to listen and to speak with more confident. I need to learn of to learn. Thank so much for your classes.
Your English pronunciation and accent are very clear and close to what is known in England as the RP short for Received Pronunciation (the BBC English!). The consonants are clear the vowels are clear the stress is correct the tone of voice is almost correct, that's of course from my point of view as a British person!
Really great video Christian. I will use the information I gleaned from the video, to help with my students. I concentrate on pronunciation. Very clear and lucid pronunciation. I cannot detect an Aussie accent, just a neutral English accent.
I'm studying at an University as a student. I'm learning English at the moment so i follow you and you tell the lessons better than our school teachers. And i want to give an advice. İ think you should change the board to white board, it is used dye , because the boardmarker make noise like tak tak tak. This is just an advice.
Man your videos are amazing! I've been learning a lot from them. Keep up the good work. I'm sure there's a lot of people out there who also agree with me. Just out of curiosity, where are you from originally? I know you're Aussie but where from?
