Anyone who hates on RU-vidrs who get stuff for free and disclose that fact are 100% just jealous. It’s the youtubers who hide the fact that the items were free and try to say their review is unbiased. That being said, I do appreciate you telling us and I’m glad you got it for free! You deserve it AND more! Thanks for the video!
I won’t accept “final form” until the screen fills as much as the lens space as possible! Obviously going to require a glass lens with much smaller bezels but I think one day it will get there
I just bought a bunch of High Quality Replacement Labels for the Game Boy Color Console in this video from a seller on eBay named Game Boy Color Man. He has every single replacement label for every Game Boy, Pocket, Color, Light, Advance, Advance SP, Micro N64, and SNES! For this Game Boy Color, he has the Battery Door Label, Serial Number Label, PAL European Serial Number Label, Made in Japan Console Label, Made in China Console Label, Pokemon Center Gold Console Label, Special Pikachu Edition Console Label, Special Pikachu Edition PAL European Console Label, Game Boy Color Light Console Label 10th Anniversary Serial Number, and Bar Code Label. He even has a bunch of custom Game Boy Color Man Console Labels and a really cool Pokemon Center Brooklyn one. And they are top quality American Made! Nothing like the toilet paper quality you'll find from other sellers that sell Chinese labels. The dude is awesome! The labels look fantastic and fit perfectly down to the millimeter. The packaging is amazing, and the dude also threw in a whole bunch of free kick ass Dishwasher Safe Die Cut Stickers! Check out his store if your Game Boy looks beat up and needs new labels! Or if you just need a smile put on your face. Honestly the coolest eBay purchase I ever made! He ships to all 50 states and Worldwide to the Entire Globe! Look at this on eBay ebay.com/usr/gameboycolorman
Rabbit with a sun tan he could just mention that other methods work but take longer. People can figure out how to use a knife. He doesn’t show the cutting that well anyways (not that he needs to), so people already need to just do it themselves anyways.
The Retro Future dremels can be had for cheap, but I do recommend you practice before using it on your precious electronics. They can slip easily and damage your stuff plus you’ll need a steady yet firm grip on the dremel
if you trust yourself with fire, heating the plastic a bit with a flame can make it easier to carve out the case with a knife. And using a warm soldering iron to smooth it out works too for a cleaner finish
No the freckle shack is the best choice. Its all around better then the Chinese knockoff screen like the one he used on this video. Freckle shack is all quality.
Same, I wouldn’t own enough games to get my money out of it and I’d get more enjoyment out of a similarly priced emulator I could use for all kinds of systems.
I brought one 10 years ago for £20 - Red GBC. Fingers are knackered right now due to arthritis & temper (smashed my hand off a door at work). I'll play it again some day
I always appreciate the transparency in your videos on top of everything else. It was great that you added a note about it being tough to fit everything in the shell correctly at first; it’s definitely easy for someone not as experienced to run into a problem like this and think they’ve ruined the whole project. Cheers, Elliott!
Full disclosure, there is a line of pixels on the right of the screen that can have artifacts on some models of CGB on certain games that use the double speed mode, usually some 05 revisions and the 06 revision should be fine.
Hot damn; that makes Link's Awakening look even more awesome, almost like it were made for the GameBoy Advance. This would absolutely be something I'd want to have...
Looks fantastic and I totally get why the screen is oversized. We're getting ever closer to the perfect replacement screen, I love my Freckleshack one but I think I'll keep holding out for the perfect one, as Roy Walker said "aye it's close, but it's not the one" ;) Top build though chap great shell/button choice works well.
I know this is not related to video but I just wanted to ask Should I buy Nintendo switch lite.. am asking this because the joy con drift problem is really making me scared I live in India and Nintendo is not officially established India.. so I can't even complain if I get any problem because there are no services
An amazing mod wish I had the cash to do the whole mod so I'm just going to get a cheaper mod if anyone has any recommendations plz respond to this comment thanks Btw a ultimate Gameboy micro would be sick
dark auras go for a everdrive x3. WAYYY cheaper and the x5-7 doesn’t have much to offer that makes its price reasonable. You’ll have all games you could ever want
@Brad1156 It’s called sarcasm ace. I’m a responsible man who takes care of his family’s needs before wasting money on personal items. It’s a cool mod, but I try to live within my budget.
So I’m looking at repairing/customising pretty much all Nintendo handhelds from GBC up to 3DS, is there a kit out there that will include all necessary tools I’ll need? Any help is greatly appreciated and I love the videos!
WHOA!! Electronic screwdriver?? Stepping up that retro modding game son!! Thank you Eliot I was waiting to see you do a GBC mod with the RM materials you acquired. I bollocks'd up trying to do a frontlight mod on a teal GBC a while back but I wanna drop an ips display in for the cleaner, sharper picture that it produces. Excellent work as always!! 🍻🍻🍻
The way I cut out plastic, which by no means is the best way, is by first heating my box cut knife on the stove. Then it glides through plastic much easier, you do have to constantly reheat the knife.
Love it man and i love your video's. Waiting for the time that i have the money to do a mod like this myself. This looks like the best mod so far and i love it. Coming at you all the way from Australia. Keep up the great content
This screen drops frames. If link gets hit in Zelda at just the right time he will disappear completely due to the timing of the frame drops. It’s a little bit of a gamebreaker. I’ve played on one of the drop in kits off of eBay for a couple of weeks and there are no issues in regards to gameplay but the screen isn’t as bright as the ips. I would take smooth gameplay over a nicer screen any day. But it’s all up to preference.
Hey I found a fix for this, I had that happen to and its hard to believe but the wire is really sensitive, mine worked at first but then fiddling around with it it stopped working, I figured I may have accidentally damaged the wire so I basically just de-soldered the wire that went from the ribbon cable to the touch sensor thing, be very careful and it should work again mine works no problem now after replacing the wire
This must be the ultimate Gameboy color! I shall buy it! Thanks, Elliot, now I will have the ultimate Gameboy color. Can't wait to see this happen to the original DMG.
I've got an idea, maybe you could become official reseller of Retro Modding stuff in Europe. You could probably get something out of it and European retro community would be grateful too!
Is there no screen mod for the GBC that doesn't require butchering the shell? I'd like to backlight mod my pikachu/pichu GBC... But I don't feel like cutting in it.
Instead of IPA in the potentiometers, use Deoxit Fader. It's brought many controls back to life without even disassembly. IPA around some parts can damage the carbon.
Only thing I would add is a GBC internal battery, micro usb c, but other than that great job again...and a screen protector, not many people do that with portables for some reason.
Most mods like this recommend a glass screen lens. They display images better than plastic and wouldn't scratch easy so it wouldn't require a screen protector. That being said, you would have to be more careful because the glass screen lens would be more prone to crack or shatter than a plastic one. As for a recharge port, it could be seen as an upgrade. Being able to switch out rechargeable AA's on the fly might be more suitable in certain circumstances though.
@@VastDivide Then why donmost cell phones have screen protectors? Glass gets scratched pretty easy if you are using portables without cases.portably. It's a nice and cheap protection plan. The rechargeable battery was an option since it's called the ultimate, just saying. You're right with the battery's, I wouldn't want it myself, but for an ultimate build people tend to go with the best upgrades.
@@PalmWavy It does. Hence why a screen protector is an even better investment. I personally use them on all my portables, and my screens never have a problem cause of it.
By full-size, you mean the new screen is exactly the same size as the original one ? (seems so but just want to be sure). About the shell, as good as some new shells can be, I will always prefer to have an original one (plastic quality is often better on the original).
You should take the Supervision handheld and upgrade it with its own backlight and bivert mod, among other things to make it actually half-decent to play on.

One thing to point out, for those who haven't ordered something into UK from US etc, import VAT and other charges can inflate the final cost (total could be roughly £84.79+). If it's above £15 and caught by customs it incurs a 20% tax on the total cost of the item (including the shipping/delivery cost). So the $83.63 would be £63.99 (based on Jan 2020 HMRC rates, £1=$1.3071), then with VAT that goes up to £76.79 and then there would be a 'handling fee' from the mail carrier of £8+ (Royal Mail is £8, I believe others are more). So the total cost would be £84.79+ (probably closer to £100 as the $83.63 doesn't include delivery cost, which would be part of the VAT calculation). Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to put anyone off. But I'd rather people know about it, so they don't end up with a shock bill from a mail carrier (they'll post a note with the costs, and require payment & pickup at local depot). It's possible that it could slip through customs, but it's always best to calculate the total potential cost before ordering.
Still prefer old non backlit pixelated screen for old classic handheld like gameboy original, gbp, gbc etc. REAL Reason we play those old console and hand held is NOSTAGIA feeling right ? If you wanna better screen why dont use your old used smartphone to emulate those, just add with good bluetooth gamepad. Or buy those cheap good chinese emulation handheld like new bittboy or LDK 🤷🏻♂️
I love GBC.... But these days it's so hard to justify this vs using emulation. Entire handhelds (using IPS) for less than the IPS mod. But I do get that people want the OG hardware.
Really great mods, but it won't render the games at 4x the resolution. It'll still be the same res as the OG games, even on the much sharper display. Still the backlight makes a HUGE difference, aside from making games actually playable they look so much more vibrant. Great video :)
Idk about you guys but I still think that an Emulator on your android phone is hands down the ultimate GBA🎊 But to be fair maybe this applies to an iPhone user that’s tired of renewing/ the hassle of installing emulators🤣😂 Interestingly enough I’m an iPhone and Android user haha Love the Gameboy Build tho🔥 I’d definitely buy it if the best GBA emulator wasn’t $3
I know this is a sponsored video and all, but for £28 I picked up a 2.2 inch IPS screen mod from AliExpress that required ZERO cutting to the case, no kapton tape, was a 99% fit so no wasted screen real estate and came with a replacement lens to hide the tiny 1mm edge of screen visible, and looks fantastic...
You can tell all these guys actually never play their dam consoles. First of all the "new" rubber membranes are fucki/ng garbage. You want to stick with good original rubber membranes and buttons, you just need to clean them with isopropilic alcohol and that's it. For the copper contacts on the GBC PCB you can add a thin layer of solder tin on every copper part (there are 4 copper layers on each button, 2 on each dpad button) and you get brand new SUPER responsive and sensitive buttons and dpad.
Here's a challenge, restore PSP 1000. That thing is full of flat cables, it's super easy to break and there are no good guides on RU-vid to disassemble and reasonable completely without jump cuts. PSPs need some loving too.

You provided links but they don't even have a large verity nor do they have the colours I want. Any colour I'm interested in, they don't have photos of. Would only buy the ips screen, if that. Disappointing, was really excited to mod my gbc.
Hey, i tried to do me a GBC like yours today, but sadly i pretty messed up! Broke my IPS display cuz i didnt have a bracket to fix the display. Do u know where i can only bracket?
looks nice except of... Price! Men 60 usd for one screen?! I could buy multiple gameboys with this price or one perfect portable console with gameboy emulator
I know this video is 8 months old. However, by just trimming post solder you can fracture the solder joint which can cause a walking wounded situation where you won't see a connection issue immediately. You really should reflow each joint after you cut to fix/prevent a cracked solder joint.
Please stop supporting these guys. I tried buying from them two weeks in a row. Had trouble with both my orders. First one got cancelled without warning. So I lost 4 days waiting for it to ship. Had to contact them to learn they cancelled it and sent no email. Today my second order which I placed on the 15th had to be cancel because they cannot ship it. I only bought from them because of your great reviews. I think you should know the problems regular people have with them. Thanks for all your videos.
