I got a tip that helped me getting a better understanding of directional air roll. Go into an aerial shot pack and purposely jump in a way that you wouldn't be able to hit the ball without adjusting, then use air roll to hit the shot. This will take a lot of trial and error, but after doing this for many hours i can confidently say that i still miss open nets.

@@Serdy you went way more precise on it then i did then. I just kinda threw myself at it and with trial and error i got better. Obviously paying close attention to what happens and why it worked or didn't work what i did - to speed up the trial and error process. I am honestly not even thinking about how many rotations i make when i am going for it, i just kinda know what to do by now in a lot of situations. However, gotta throw a disclaimer in here, i try to avoid having to adjust a lot in actual ranked games, i only use it when i have no other choice. But if i can avoid using so much boost and overcommit, i will just look for a different option, like taking a 50 or just going back.

to all my fellow low rank players.. directional air rolling is a means to get touches and control your car on a different axis than normal air roll..its not to be fancy or have swagg so learn to use it wisely...getting a nice save doing a sick tornado spin is cool but the most important thing is you got the save

@mistadude going high is enough of a mix at a low rank, no need to tornado behind it, odds are you aren’t getting the direction change; better to build good habits. The need to mix aerial attacks isn’t till c3 minimum. For low ranks, just be able to actually pop it up and take it high is enough.

When I started focusing on learning air roll, I de-ranked hard. I just used it as much as possible and missed a lot of free aerials in the process. But no regarts, now I can air roll a lot more consistently, yet I’m still no master and still have a lot to learn. Also the biggest thing that helped me was redirects training packs. Idk why but those training pack put so much focus on positioning my car and rotating it. Plus it got me out of air rolling just for style, and got me to air roll for adjustments.

This is interesting because when I first started working on rolling, I was told to just focus on one directional air roll and not worry about regular air roll, although I see how it might be beneficial. Most of my air rolls are for recoveries, as that's a weak point for me. I lose control if I try and use it in the air lol.

@tweezy9578 I made it to GC with the controls that Aztral, Vatira and you use. Air roll L/R on the bumpers and airroll+powerslide on x/square. I found it intuitive but I also spent hundreds of hours combined in freeplay, training packs, workshop maps, and in games. I would also have the tendency to use directional air roll more than is necessary, it comes down to watching replays and being critical with your choices. “Did i really need to spin there? Could a straight shot work better? or just one turn to get a good first touch?” I also switched my ARL to LT/L2 for two reasons: to be like Zen, and because my bumper buttons kept breaking. Trigger air roll takes some working out the kinks but i would definitely recommend it if you want to try

Air roll is the most over used/improperly used mechanic in the game. Between low Champ and High GC about 90% of people I play with and against seem like they taped down air roll. I've seen so many empty net misses and easy saves whiffed because the player tried to air roll in a situation where it did nothing...except make them miss the ball. It's a important skill to learn if you want to improve but building bad habits can be what gets you hard stuck in a lower rank. When I started playing I would always double jump and it took forever to break that habit. Learning the right way to do something slowly will get you a lot farther than learning the wrong way quickly.

And now he doesn't stop spinning, even on our own goal he trying it and from now on we start to get more loses than wins cause of so many mistakes he made cause of spinning the whole time looking good. Through all the frustrations he ball chase at the end to show how good he is, but he still have to learn and cant accept how it hurts the team trying it in every match instead of training or 1vs1 where he only can hurt hisself with it. Iam glad iam to old to spinning the whole time and with job and kids I dont have the time to play 1500 hours in training so iam using it only when I think iam in a bad position in the air and try to fix it

I'm new at this game and there are some opponents that use air rolls, but they make a lot of mistakes, still learning a lot I guess as I'm playing in the earlier ranks. I like to defend a lot and it would be nice to better air roll to be able to intercept balls in the air, instead of waiting it to be near the ground. As you improve in levels, it becomes more and more important to have good control in the air I guess. But for this, it's better to do a lot of trainings and to apply it in matches only if you either can't win or loose the match anymore, to avoid loosing ranks or loosing the game for your team mates. I sometimes see players flying around all the time, without ever hitting one ball.

@@toonco7473 In my head I see it this way, you can move the nose of your car over the X axis (up and down) and the Y axis (left and right). When you use directional air roll you can still move over both the X and Y axis while barrel rolling, but when you use normal air roll you eliminate your ability to use the Y axis. I use air roll left 90% of the time, but I've just learned how to use air roll right as well for recoveries and power shots. So no need for the (in my opinion) less versatile normal air roll.

@@Anthony-lv4ki That's reasonable. Yet, free air roll, (as i call it) gives you the freedom to move your car in slight adjustments, whether its setting up an off the wall aerial, or making your car flattened out for a recovery. Both types of air roll are useful and provide assistance in their specific situations. That's why most players move to using both inputs further down the line. I never really know when to use Air Roll Left besides speed flipping and turning in the air. 💀

Same, I have r1 and l1 for right and left air roll because it’s what I liked more when I started using it, it just feels better to me.

@@tobeyyeager5913 I would argue you can make even more accurate slight adjustements with directional air roll, seeing as you still have control over the x and y axis.

For anyone. Simplest way to understand it is by manual air rolling and doing "quarter circles" for stuff. So Up, ROLL to 1 - 2 -3. Speedflip. Down is basicly a half flip or essentially a tornado spin.

Personally I have boost on L1 square as power slide and air roll left and circle as air roll right and I don’t use the regular air roll at, I’m champ 2 and I’ve tried recently to use the regular one but I’m just wired to use the directional ones now 😂

I actually recommend watching squishy’s directional air roll tutorial, because that is what really helped me learn DAR. He actually explains what each movement does and when to use each movement.

I still use x or square as my air roll and I have done for years, I know for me to progress and get to the next rank I need to change it to be able to compete with others and it’s gonna be really hard to break the habit of using x

I know where each directional air roll direction will take me, but when I airroll I aften miss the time window to use the fastest rotation and instead do another half to full rotation to do the adjustment then. This works for rings if I stay slow, but has zero use for an actual game as I miss 90% of the time. I have no idea to train the fast use of all neccessary directions with air roll.
