Thank you I didn't know that coins start to tone if left in plastic folders looks like I'm ordering lots of flips and I've just gone and put my kew piedfort kew gardens in a flip cos its started to tone and I've not even had it a year which I not happy about thanks for the extra information 😀 🙂 👍
My interest in coin collecting came from a tin belonging to my grandfather. His regiment did a tour of the Empire in 1912/13 and he kept coins from the places visited. Back in the days before the Internet my information came from dealers, Coin Monthly magazine and the annual Krause & Krause coin price guide. I also got some lucky finds in antique/second hand shops. Whilst I would pick up coins I found interesting (historical or design) I settled on collecting farthings, German (from unification and colonies and states) and British Empire and Commonwealth
That is fascinating! I love these personal stories around coins that people collect. I can imagine that identifying coins in a pre internet time must have been a bit frustrating at times I know I lean heavily on Numista when I am trying to track down a coin -CC

Great video! I started collecting just over two years ago, I knew nothing. Started with 50p's then found out you could get "special" £2 coins, now through videos like this and all the fantastic cointubers out there I collect all sorts. I still have lots of circulating coins still to collect, but my most recent addiction is the older proof sets, I've just got the 1983 which is in your video.

My advice, choose a theme and stick to it, choose metal coins with intrinsic value and dont rush into specialist historical coins until you've gained the relevant knowledge.
I have a question that I am struggling to find the answer. Cupronickel is (or was) used for most 'Silver' colour circulating coins but was it chose to replace Silver as it has the same weight? A BUNC 50p is 8g but a Silver Proof 50p is also 8g. I know that back in time most 'Silver' coins were actually Silver and there was still some around in the 1940's when coin automation was beginning to be used so i wondered if the cupronickel alloy was picked so that coins still weighed the same?
Cupronickel is used for coins due to it's durability. Most (if not all) countries kept their coins the same weight so as not to confuse the public and for use in vending machines
BCC make some great content but for modern coinage they are amongst the most expensive in the UK. One is ALWAYS best to use a respected auction house as they'll work on a commission rather than trying to get as big a margin as possible.
hello, i have a question. i apologise if this comment is lengthy or rambly at all. i've had an interest in coin collecting for a while now. i collect certain coins for personal reasons (and others because i simply love the design) but i've become interested in collecting the commemorative uk coins ever since i found some in my change. living on the isle of man, it's a little harder to come across these coins. i've got my hands on a few (as has my brother who collects as well) but as you can imagine, i typically find the iom coins. my question is: is it worth buying a job lot of circulated uk coins on ebay just to get me started, or would it be better to go to a bank and ask about coin bags? i've done a lot of research and i'm conscious about people charging more for coins that are only face value (or slightly over but not by much); however, i've found some that i think are reasonably priced, and would like them for my collection. only, i've had mixed answers on whether it's worth buying circulated coins or not. thanks in advance :)
Christopher collects I watched 👀 a £2 hunt a while ago what was the error called something about an egg error I looked online and can't find anything could you let me know please? Anybody know 🤔
Fried egg error. Basically the outer part of the £2 coin was still warm so when the coin was struck and the inner expanded to lock it into place it expanded too far and into the outer rim 👍 -CC
Its no secret the top graders and dealers all clean their coins from time to time if needed for milk spots , unatractive tone dirt pvc damage .They call it conservation and charge for it . Ms70 is a commonly know cleaner also ezest for silver or gold ... coin care is a good product for coppers as protects the copper from corrosion. Copers need this as they breakdown and degrade overtime . Cleaning isnt recommended but if done correctly you can give the coin its orginal lustre without breaking the orginal striking layer . Alot of people scrub pat dry whipe coins and use harsh cleaning methods this can spotted a mile off . A coins lustre will never flow the same after its been cleaned even dipped professionally. the surfaces all reflect from manny angles not a smooth transition and roll .this can be picked up on after years of research and experience looking at various coins .
It is a tricky subject and the best advice we give is not to clean coins yourself especially if you are unfamiliar or new to the hobby and to seek professional advice if you think there is something worth being done to a coin -CC
@@BritanniaCoinCompany true i dont clean my coins as it shouldnt be done only in extreme situations. I try and buy graded coins or coins with orginal surfaces. My favourite are rainbow tonned coins especially the morgans . Environmental damage or pvc is a different subject and should be took off to protect the coins. especially old copper even a speck of dust can cause problems later on . Pcgs and ngc can tell the difference between cleaned / dipped /orginal coins. Dipping is acceptable amoung the big grading companies aslong as the orginal striking layer is intact and it isnt heavily dipped in the solution. These solutions all strip the coins metals and layers and should only be used lightly. You can get away with removing milk spots unatractive tonning dirt or grime if done properly they will get graded no problems . all the gold coins from SS Central America ship had to be restored and cleaned to remove debris sealife and coral now they are all ms coins and sell for hefty premiums .
