Do you have information where in the USA I could purchase the beautiful heart punch that has the cross hatching in it that was in the video at 1:23? Thank you
Unfortunately that one is no longer being manufactured I'm afraid, it's years old now. I did see this one amzn.to/47ELlA9 which is similar and it's the exact same brand/packaging as the heart one, you might be able to track one down at a local store or garage sale or even EBAY perhaps?
PS I WROTE TOO SOON! Thx soooo much for showing me how to use the envelope punch board! I bought one and haven’t been able to figure it out until you just showed/explained how! You are GREAT!
💜💜💜tfs💜💜💜 it's funny, I found a heart punch in store (anyone remember when Carl sold their punches in Newsagents??) and bought it without knowing anything about scrapping/cardmaking. I was just like ohhh that's cute, and bought it. After about a week I looked up what to do with it - and that was my intro to Scrapping... hahaha
Oh my goodness, I remember those Carl punches were everywhere at one point! That totally sounds like something I'd do too (pick up a cute heart punch just because it's cute 💗) 🤣 What a fun intro to all the paper things... there's no going back now!! xo
Thanks so much - this is very helpful! I’m going to find your tutorial now. I have a nice collection of punches that I have used many times. But I love how you’re showing all the extra things that can be done! So cool!
Wow, thank you, I have lots of these little 'things' and I had forgotten how to use them and especially to use my envelop maker too. Thank you for sharing these for me too.
We store our punches in my husband's old Craftsman tool rollaway. They are made for heavy dury and we just cleaned and painted it to match our craftsroom. Also have many stored on towel bars.
Oh Valerie... the joy is in the making, not in the end product. I know it can be frustrating though. I hope my tips help. There are a bunch of layout tutorials on the channel where you can scrapbook along with me, maybe they might help? Thanks for spending a little of your creative time hanging out with me 🌷🌷🌷
I have some of those Martha Stewart punches, and I a) didn't realize they came with instructions, and b) didn't know how to use the border and corner punches together. So thank you!
Thank you! Now I feel the need to bring out all my old punches and start creating again! Another tip for paper scraps: use a post-it note as a handle! 👍🏼
Oh yay! Mission accomplished 💗 Oh yes, I had heard that, post-it notes make great handles, I just found I always had paper strips sitting on my desk so tend to use those. Thanks for popping by the channel today!
Thanks for letting me know Pamela, it's funny, a few people have said this doesn't work, but I have found it work quite well if done early enough and frequently... so I'm glad to hear you've had success with it. Thanks for popping by the channel today.
Such a great video Gwen. I appreciate all of the tips and tricks. Thank you! I am definitely guilty of overusing the ruler on the envelope punch board. 🤦🏼♀️
This is great. I’ve picked up several punches at thrift stores and couldn’t figure out hoe they were suppose to work haha. So very helpful. Thank you so much. I just found your channel. Yeah👍❤️
You have some great techniques for using punches. Thanks. The hardest thing for me to understand is how to line the paper on the border punches side by side so they punch the pattern in consecutive order. I can't see how to do that? Any easier help?
Thanks Katie... I'm not sure if you missed it, but I did show this towards the start of the video, least, I think that's what you are asking. There are images printed on the punch that you can line up your paper with, note though that the alignment for the straight edges is different to the alignment for the corners (if you have the set that goes around the entire page). The other tip I'll add here which I don't think I mentioned in the video is to try and keep the paper super straight, it makes the finished edge true and straight and helps with alignment. I hope this helps! If I've misunderstood you, please just ask me again, always happy to help!
Loved your ideas Gwen, especially the quilty look and the layered lace with stitching. While these are a bit involved for my everyday scrapbooking, I will be sure to use them to highlight favorite photos. I have had mixed results with sharpening my punches by punching through foil. Can you give more specific details please? Also, does heavy duty foil work better than the regular weight? I’m particularly frustrated with my intricate butterfly punch. Does this work for dies as well?
Glad you enjoyed these Linda, that technique with the layered lace is a little involved, you could also just skip the stitching or add it with a gel pen (faux stitching). I've had mixed results too with the foil. I've found the more basic shapes seem to work better than intricate ones AND I've noticed that if I catch them early I get better results... as in, if I leave it too late it doesn't seem to work as well. The brand of foil I showed you in the video is the one I use, just don't get the cheapest one. I also fold it in half to get a little extra strength in it before I punch. There is a Martha Stewart butterfly punch that I had that I had to throw away, it never punched correctly and I gave up on it. Also, I have never tried it with dies, I'd give it a go!
Do you have information where in the U .S. I could purchase the Heart punch that has the cross hatch inside it that you were using at 1:23 in the video? thanks!
Thanks for popping by today! That one is an older design, it's called 'Lattice Heart'. amzn.to/40QoDmK You'll have some trouble finding it these days, but packaging will look exactly like that link.
Lol, yes, I am working on replacing them, even though I also have cricut, big shot, multiple dies. I so enjoy these the most. It really presents a challenge to make cards and shows you level of creativity and skill.
The other thing I did hear is that you can try to punch them through wax paper, that might be hard if they really are stuck shut. Could also be worth an email to the customer service of the brand to see if they have any suggestions.
Great video, if only punches weren't so expensive. Btw, the foil "hack" doesn't work. There is no way aluminium foil is strong enough to sharpen the edge of a punch. I checked this with my chef husband who knows loads about keeping knife edges sharp. Its a myth thats circulated around the crafting community without any basis.
Interesting... I have found it to work for my punches... especially if I do it before they get too bad. I think the kind of foil makes a difference too which is why I recommend the thicker ones. I only ever speak about my experience and what has actually worked for me. I'd love to know what you do to sharpen your punches? Let us know 🌸
Punching foil may clean out your punch but it will NOT sharpen it! Physics tells us that in order to sharpen, the sharpening material must be harder than the metal being sharpened 9:21
Hmmmm.... well, for me, cleaning it certainly does help get a cleaner cut. Others have suggested here too that baking paper can help with sticky punches and I've since tried that and it has helped too. What do you do with dull punches? How do you restore them?
Yeah, it's an interesting one because I've had mixed reviews on that. Some people say it works, others have your experience. The thing is, I guess it doesn't hurt to try. Thanks for popping by the channel today Barbara and sharing your thoughts. 🌸
I am just getting interested in paper crafting. I never knew so many punches were available. I have a small collection of punches. Thanks for showing how to use them. I love all your ideas. 💕
Brilliant video thank you Gwen. I particularly love the hacks, especially using the hearts to make a scalloped edge - so clever. I’m loving your videos.
Thank you so much Laura! I love that one too... so magic how they turn into scallops as soon as you place that card on top 🪄 I'm so glad you found this helpful, thanks for taking the time to write me this very kind message 🎀
Great tips. One additional comment. For my butterflies, I like using the negative as a stencil the way you did to make a shadow/underlayment for my dies. Thanks for sharing
I tried using foil to sharpen my border punches because I haven’t used them for a really long time and still, they won’t punch through my 110 lb cardstock
Did it work? I've heard mixed reports. Some have had success and others not so much. I have found it really works best if you can catch them early enough.
Punches can be expensive yes... but consider that if you look after them you'll have them a very long time. They are one of those tools you can use over and over again.
A couple of thing's....1) I've heard that locking the punch in a closed position, weakens the spring over time. Has anyone experienced this? 2) I laminate all my instruction sheets and keep them together on a key ring so that they don't get torn or lost. Thank you for your video.
Hey lovely! 👋 Thanks so much for sharing this, I haven't had that experience, but I don't always 'remember' to close them so I can't say that mine have been sitting closed for years on end. Also, what a fab idea to preserve your instruction sheets, I really need to do that! Thanks for hanging out with me today 🙂
Very informative video, thank you. You didn't mention thickness of paper or I missed it. I have had to throw a few punches out in the past when they have jammed as the paper was too thin. Any tips for un-jamming beyond slamming down on desk top to release. Eleanor
Hey Eleanor, paper... hmmmm... I actually haven't had too much trouble with that. I do only tend to use scrapbooking pattern paper or 216gsm American Crafts card stock. The only issue I've ever had was with more intricate dies and the thicker card, no issues with thin papers. My suggestion would be what you mentioned, slamming down on a desk top to release, but I'd also then recommend punching with wax paper/baking paper - this was suggested to me by another lovely creative here in the comments. Sorry I can't be of more help. Perhaps someone will see this question and be able to add in their experience below. 💗💗💗
That one is an older design, it's called 'Lattice Heart'. amzn.to/40QoDmK You'll have some trouble finding it these days, but packaging will look exactly like that link.
Sorry to hear that, I have found myself that you have to get them early and even do it frequently from new. It's frustrating when a beloved punch goes dull. Thanks for popping by today 🌼 I hope you found the other tips useful. xo
I haven't found one. Especially any that have any detail in them. Your best bet would be something like a solid circle or square. Anything like a border punch would struggle I think.
Hi! It’s my first time seeing one of your RU-vid(s). Thank you for a very nice tutorial. Besides Some misc punches, I have a Martha Stewart circle punch system w several punches, that I bought on EBay. Seems very complicated, but I think some of the tips you gave will help me.
Hey Patricia! Welcome! I'm so glad you found me. I haven't actually seen that system so I can't offer any help I'm afraid. I think a variety of circles would be super helpful and versatile so well worth trying to figure out if you can. Thanks for taking the time to say hello 👋
Wow, I’ve been scrapbooking for over twenty years, and you’ve shown me hacks that I’ve never seen before! Bravo, Gwen! Oh, and I have a hack for you. If your punch is sticking, punch through some waxed paper, after you sharpen it with foil. Thank you for sharing. I’ll be watching this video again and again, for sure! 😊
Oh wow, I'm so glad Kim... that is so so good. I had planned this one for more beginners, but I am so happy you found it useful! 🎀 AND, thank you for your tip, I haven't tried this and I do have some sticky punches that I think this would work really well with, so glad you shared it here for our other creative friends xox
I’ve never used my sewing machine on my scrapbook pages. Do you stick your shapes down with some sort of adhesive before sewing? Love my WRMK envelope punch board! Love your tips around punches and thanks for sharing! Crafty hugs! ❤️
Hey Ali 👋👋👋... Sometimes yes and sometimes no, but always keep the adhesive away from where the actual stitches will be, your sewing machine won't like the sticky!! I've actually made a video full of my sewing tips and tricks and answered a bunch of questions about sewing on paper. You can watch that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6MJVmT--NLo.html
Please can you show more on the pocket punch board? Thanks for all the tips, especially using punches as a stencil! Punch are a good investment especially when using your tips.
Your layouts bring punches to the next level!!😍😍😍 Tiny punches are great to use in place of enamel dots, especially with the rising cost. Add Liquid Glass to them to bring them up a notice. Plus you can stamp on them to add texture.
I still haven't opened it 😱😱😱 but I will... I'll make a video on it once I unbox and test it out. I'm super keen to give it a try, just haven't had a lot of block time to get to it this week. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment on my videos, its so nice of you! 🌸
Thank you... I've used the single punch too for enamel dots, so much cheaper than enamel dots so you can sprinkle them all over the page which I love. I hadn't thought to stamp on them first though... clever! 🙌
I bought my first punch nearly 30 years ago & I now have quite a few! Some get used more than others but I can never bring myself to get rid of any as you never know when you will need them! I love snowflake punches as you can get so many different ones, I have a whole drawer full (about 20 different snowflakes!) I also have lots of the same punches as you have & I'm in the UK. Great video, I learnt a few new hacks. My first punches were tiny little ones, moon, sun, star, butterfly etc, I still use these a lot. Beautiful layouts by the way.❤
Hey Diane, I use the Aluminium Foil and punch that through them. In the video, that was where I showed how to punch the foil with that butterfly punch. This is the only method I've seen and I will say that the best results I've had with it is to do it early, and frequently. If the punch gets too blunt it is very hard to fix. Just keep a stash of it in the same place you store your punches and give each one a punch whenever you use them. 👍
I did not use my punches anymore for a couple of years. But seeing your creations I love the use them again. So I'am ready to get all my boxes with punches and are going to make something beautyfull with them. Thanks so much!! Love from Leiden, Holland.
Thank you! I'm a bit the same, I tend to only use up to 3 because I find more than that always ends up too cluttered. I haven't figured that out yet. 😆
Thanks for the tips! I think punches were some of the first items I got when I started my paper crafting journey! I just pulled some out to use this week! Thanks for sharing!
Long time punch artist from way back…. Another good thing to do is also punch thru 4 to 6 layers of wax paper. This will help keep the punches from binding.
Hey!! I didn't know that punch art was a thing until I posted this video, another lady mentioned it and I've been looking into it... it's amazing the things you gals do with punches, I'm so inspired!! Thanks for sharing your experience here, it's so helpful to everyone. 🌷
