I’m a guppy convert. And now I’m addicted. Easy to keep, friendly and super diverse. They’re like little puppies as they come to trust you. Thanks for another awesome video 💙
Omg yesss! I just made a container pond and added a few guppies and I’m amazed every time they come up to say hello! They hangout when I’m there and come up to my fingers if I put them in there, aren’t farting away or hiding. 🥹
I kept guppies when I first got into the hobby about 30 years ago, but then moved on to other fish because back then they were too common and a bit boring. Nowadays they have evolved and become a lot more colourful and interesting.I have gone back to keeping them again. Thanks for another great video.
Good morning, Jason. Great video. My local fish stores are all big box stores and they only sell the males. I never got to into guppies but they do look great in a planted tank. Hope you and Joanna are on the mend, I've been under the weather too. You family is in my prayers. Take care.
its pretty cool having guppies long enough to breed and have more. i picked up 40 fry for free on buy sell and bought 5 adults. now i have 8 fry from them and seeing the color differences right from birth is really neat. some are like bright yellow and some are grey! from 2 or 3 different parents too
Had male guppies now for a few months, decided to throw in some females less than a week ago and already I have fry about 5mm long now, their all hiding among the various mosses I have, but they seem to prefer the Christmas moss the most, absolutely thrilling to see!
@@MarkoUntitled 🔥 I completely agree. I've been breeding ultra-platinum guppies with cobra Endler guppies, they are some of the most beautiful guppies I've ever seen.🔥
@@batbrains187 the only thing i noticed about them is that they are very vulnerable to certain diseases. Very hard to stop them from spreading once they start. Otherwise probably the first fish i'd recommend to anyone for their first tank.
Guppy is my very favorite. I have Black Moscow guppy and Neon tetras in 81 gallon tank, there is a lots of fry already. Amazing little fish, love them. Thanks for the vid, helpful as always. 🥰
Another stunning fish to keep with them is Blue Rams, they definitely compliment one another. I keep them in my fry tank and never have they even taken a second look at even the smallest of fry as they are a sand sifter
on a few things: guppy females can be very aggressive, especially towards other guppy females, stressing out the peaceful female to the point of no return. Guppies are highly prone to disease and death, and need very hard water to thrive. Water just a little too soft can also cause quick death. Guppy males are extremely relentless in trying to breed. Be aware that the female can get extremely stressed. Guppy mom as well as other fish, will also eat her own fry, about 99% of the time they will try. And they will hunt them down. Guppies can certainly be fin nippers. Particularly a big aggressive female. Be VERY picky about which guppies you choose and from where, due to excessive inbreeding. I recommend seeing them in person and watching them in the store tank. Also they will cannibalize each other, so be mindful of dead fish in the store's tank, and whether they've been picked at. Guppies, Molly's and I believe platy's can and will cross breed, but I believe the offspring will be sterile. Not sure on that one.
Mollys are from a different genus all together so they can’t produce viable fry. Sward tails and platys are from the same genus along with endlers and can and will breed with guppies if given the opportunity. The fry will be viable.
Iv had fish most of my life and now I’m old iv resorted to guppies ,zebra danos, two pineapple swards mini plecks and 12 neons , that’s it ,so all you say is SPOT ON ,you know your fish well done ,
I've kept guppies and mollies together in a 120 litre tub here in Thailand for years. Plenty of plants on the top, leaves on the bottom and no problems with the babies they churn out. Super cheap here in Thailand too, every type of guppy from as little as a couple of baht each - 10 cents! 😮👍
I have some guppies in my Betta sorority, along with my male black orchid crown tail, Neons, crayfish, snails and shrimp. 2 are always paired up and forever playing with each other. 1 is a loner but chills with the 2 females that are the moms of the babies. The dad died a while back, but his kids took after him nicely.
Just added another four guppies today two kohaku & two full gold ribbon tail they look superb, bought four Moscow green last week, guppies are really great to look at
I keep tuxedo guppies in a large container pond with 1 male Betta, but it's a very heavily planted pond so they can have their own space and there are natural barriers. So far it's going well. I have kept fish since age 14 and I'm 45 now. Currently my small heated pond is the only set up I have going.
I have a beta with 6 guppies in a 20 gallon and I’m lucky enough to have a really chill beta. Except I found on the food off day I caught him eating a tiny baby cherry shrimp. Aside from they they are all cool with each other lol
Hi Jason -- 1. First -- THANK YOU for all of your species profile videos! They are soo very helpful. 2. I'm wondering if I need to redistribute the MALE guppies in one of my 40 gallon tanks..... I'm noting my male guppies are fin nipped -- In this community tank, I have MALE guppies (no female guppies), which currently has: a. MALE only guppies, no female guppies (about 3-4 each of white, blue topaz, black cobra, gold cobra and red cobra) b. 8 peacock gudgeons (hang out mostly at bottom 1/3) c. 8 harlequin rasboras (doing their water aerobics back and forth most of the day) d. 6 green cory cats e. few mystery snails Additional Info: - Sand substrate, lots of hiding spots (mainly for the peacock gudgeons) including artifical plants, decor, etc - Two large sponge filters - heater set to 76-F - I test water 2-3 times a week in all [18] of my tanks; that tank tends to be stable with pretty much no ammonia, nitrates or nitrites; - I do have 3 other guppy tanks with female to male ratio about 3-4:1 (blue moscows, red dragon and purple mosiac), and there's no problems with any fin nipping in any of those tanks. I'm thinking I need to get the male guppies around some girlfriends.... at least a 2:1 ratio, probably by breaking them up and adding to other tanks, with female guppies; otherwise, I have a local fish store that would accept rehomed guppies -- Advice please!! Thanks in advance
I had a Brackish tank in Middle School just filled with local wild caught fish, shrimp, crabs, but now as an adult I am setting up a patio pond and I decided on getting guppies. I forgot just about everything I learned from keeping that tank in Middle School, if I ever really knew anything to begin with or if it was mostly my parents maintaining it I don’t quite remember. However getting back into it and never having bought fish I want to make sure my tank is safe for guppies before I buy them. My tank is a month old and has snails, blood worms, and a bit of algae. It has zero ammonia, nitrates, nitrites, etc. however it does have a PH of 5.0-5.5. It is heavily scaped so I have driftwood and moss in it which I later learned can lower your PH. The fish store told me not to worry about PH because they said people usually try to chase it too much which does more harm then good. However my PH being what it is I think I should be concerned... I was thinking of adding just a bit of crushed coral into the bio filter. Is that a good idea? My tap water PH is 6.5.
With a pH that low it can be tough to keep most types of fish. I would add some aragonite or Caribsea African Cichlid mix to try and bring up the KH and hopefully stabilize the pH in the upper 6s or low 7s. Even with that it may be tough to keep guppies.
Thanks so much for the reply and advise. I’ll have to try adding one of those things and hopefully it will do the trick. As much as I like drinking coffee it figures that the tank I make would have an acidity of coffee. Yikes! Thanks again!
great video. i absolutely love guppies.they're beautiful and active and they have babies like there's no tomorrow. what's there not to love? :) One question: What rocks do you have on your tank? the first one that you showed. the white ones look like marble and the dark greys look granite but...can you please tell me? i really like that rockscape.
Love guppies but I'm sworn off livebearers due to a Mollie explosion lol. Very captivating and beautiful and characterful fish. Do love the guppies tho, may try them in my hexa tank but do males only. Hope you and Joanna are both on the mend. Get well soon
We love guppies in our house. We are currently making plans to start breeding several different strains of guppies, mostly for fun, but maybe a bit of profit as well.
I have a big tank with south American chiclids. My wife wanted a guppy tank so 20. Gal, with shrimp and 2 guppies. Now I have over 100 and 3 generations. The colors I admit are beautiful with that many.
Hoping to pick up a male and a few females today have a 29 or 30 gallon I got used bought a power head and a sponge filter plus bubbler. Water is treated and I'm excited to be back in the fish world.
I adore my guppies, only had them 7 or 8 months. I lost one recently, it got dropsy, but fortunately not had any issues with the others, all healthy. Something I do find sweet is when I put my (very clean) hand in the tank when recycling or adding an ornament instead of being scared they rush over to me and brush against and through my fingers every time❤, they are from a pet store so must be used to humans. I am not going to mix them with other fish. Heater and filter work fine. I did hear the hotter the temperature the shorter their lifespan so keep at 25c. They love rocks and sleep or rest in them at night. Thanks for the filter advice though, I think my setting is a bit too strong. Yours are beautiful👌
My son was having probs w his guppies too. We started boiling dandelion or spinach, just a leaf or so and skipping feeding protein foods the day we feed greens.I had heard they can get issues with only high protein diets and it seems to be helping. I hope all your guppies are doing well! ✌️
@@laurabustos6560 Aww, thank you for the advice. Unfortunately I've lost 3 now, 2 on the same day😣. I think I am doing too big a water change and possibly been overfeeding them. They were fine for months but suddenly things gone a bit wrong. I will try those foods though, thank you👍
@@nonnayoubuzinnes1669 oh shoot, sorry you lost your little guys! Do you have a clean up crew? Snails or shrimp etc? Also if you don't have live plants, even floating plants, that would be a good addition as well. All of my tanks are deep substrate heavily planted so I don't do much water changing, just top offs. But too big of water changes shouldn't be a problem, most of the guppy breeders do huge water changes. Probably first look at the over feeding, especially if you don't have a clean up crew. That can throw your water parameters off big time. I only feed my fish what they'll eat in a min or so. But I do feed twice a day usually, just really small amounts. Wishing you luck from sunny California!!✌️
@@laurabustos6560 Another guppy dead today😣. I don't get it, did water check, no issues. I have a zebra snail although that only eats the algae, temperature is fine, filter and bubbler no issues, and been careful not to overfeed them. I did have a live plant but it was fiddly to plant in the gravel, might get a floating one. Am going to buy spinach today and try that. Might also buy a shrimp. Thanks for all your help❤. Greetings back from sunny UK (we get about a month of sun tops😄)
@@nonnayoubuzinnes1669 what a bummer!! If your water parameters are good and you don't have any other issues, it might have been your stock? I've never had guppies with obvious issues but they might have been sick to begin with. It sounds like you're doing everything right! 🙏✌️
what filter would you recommend for a 40 gallon with guppies so that the flow isn't too strong & I have a sponge filter in mind for backup/extra filtration? thank yall for everything yall do for the hobby!
Thank you for the video, very informational I just bought 3 today, they are all males. When can i buy my females? I read that you should have 2 females for each male so should i buy 6 females? I have a 10 gal tank is that enough space?
I've rescued 11 guppies from a pet store that abused them! And I did it on Friday last week! I've lost 2 so far! So I have 9 left! I couldn't be happier with them! What do you recommend for care for them? I'm not a beginner with fish but with guppies! Thanks
I'm planning on rescuing some feeder guppies from a pet store that uses them as food for other Animals and fish! They will be my pets if they survive! I'll be adding 8 to my family! I couldn't be happier with this! I tried before but had an ammonia spike because they gave me to many at once! So not doing it again! I'll be putting them in my 5 gallon planted tank! They will enjoy it!
Hello, What do you do when you have too many? I have a tank solely for my person viewing, what happens when I get too many in a tank? Will fish stores buy them from me or what is advised?
I've been breeding guppies for some a year now and feel strongly I came across a few rare strands from my 3rd generation of guppy babies. Can you check them out for me?
Guppy's can go from really low startup fishs and prizes to insane topbreeding and champiomship prizes to 1200 for a 2 male, 3 female group (and up), i love them, not keeping them now but i started with a mix guppy tank.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics Yeah butt 300 for a guppy🤪, dont have the cash but i do fil my 500Liters tank for that very complete! But starting out with couples of 20 to 30 euro's breeding them seperate and fill then mixtank of 500 is the best way to go, i want a Cool tank, not a prizewinner, i am proud to say that i hade a Managuensis Pair were could sell the breed for registered topqualety, Not prezewinners, but f1status.
Jason, have you ever kept freshwater clams in your tanks? Has anyone been successful with it? I know they're fantastic filters but I guess they starve to death pretty fast because of that.
My daughter keeps them happy in a tank with a 7 year old goldfish. The temperature without a heater stays between 24 to 34 degrees depending on the time of year
Really appreciate the like 😃, do have to say though she has a 110 litre tank with 1 goldfish and 7 guppy’s 😂, so it’s a little sparse but her goldfish is busy all the time moving stones around and we’re a little unsure about getting a male guppy she only has females. Great channel thanks for sharing Kind regards Carl
I am thinking of getting my 2 year old some fish to teach her how to care for a pet. I am hoping for a multi breed tank but I have a 3 gallon tank limit we have limited space wich breeds would you recommend and how many?
8.2 PH...... maybe my PH being 7.6 is not a bad thing then. iv been trying to lower it as my local pet store keeps theirs at 7.1. But for some reason my KH rises which also raises my PH. Iv made sure to remove all rocks that are not inert. I only have dragon stone in there now. substrate is the ADA system with power sand as the base. tons of mopani drift wood. tons of plants. I have been using my 20 gal planted tank as my test case for dosing but the fish are in the 60 gal. both tanks are set up the exact same way, excluding driftwood, being none in the 20 gal. the 20 gal I was able to get the KH down to 1 drop and the PH was right around 7.0. after three days its now gone up to 2 drops for the KH and 7.3 PH.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thanks for responding, so would it be best to just set up an acclimation tank and slowly raze the ph from 7.1 to what my tank is. Im not sure if the hour and half acclimation is to short.
My dad has a tank with a few guppies 2 females 1 male and they're breeding but the tank has 2 angelfish and some white cloud minnows the angelfish are very annoying and try and eat anything live that can fit in its mouth like fry and small shrimp
Ahhhh, guppies! So fun, beautiful, and interesting in so many ways! Lovely footage…but I can tell the lovely Joanna is rubbing off on me when the burning question in my mind after a guppy info video is: What was that awesome plant around 4:15?!? 🤣😊🌱
Hello, I have a bunch of guppies in a large 100 gallon indoor unheated tub. I have a heat lamp just above where a log is floating. Some of the guppies have learned about this heat. They form up on the log damn near fully beaching themselves? Some fully Beach themselves and lay there for minutes without air...? Wondering if anyone has witnessed their guppies doing something similar. I'm fairly certain it started with one male until they all caught on, so to me it seems learned.
how did you get started, i just got my males and tomorrow and im fetching my females, any tips? and how long did it take to breed, i appreciate anything
@@colincarrington4629 If you are planning on breeding guppies for profit keep a trio in atleast 2.5~5 gallons tank so the male can easily chase the female to breed. Also keep each strain separately in each tank so you won't end up having mutts. But if you are only planning on keeping them as a hobby you can put them pretty much on a community tank. They will breed like crazy, you'll have fry in about every month or atleast 21~28 days.
We bought 5 blue guppies and 4 black and orange guppies, but some have died and so we bought more and have lost a few more in the process, what can I do differently to preserve the life of the ones that are still alive??
@PrimeTimeAquatics I was just told that a higher pH can cause mostly male guppies to be reproduced? Have you heard of this? My pH is in the high 7 range.
I ❤❤❤ guppies but switched to platys in my 20L as I fell in love with them at the LFS, and their guppy selection was not what I was looking for. I have an adult pair plus a juvenile female. Now awaiting fry, should be just one more week now! The tank seems so empty when you first put them in...tick tock. I need to find a centerpiece fish that will help with population control...female powder blue dwarf gourami maybe?
I’m thinking of putting a school of guppies with a lone albino Senegal bichir (perhaps also a regular Senegal bichir for contrast and a bit more activity). Do y’all think It’ll balance out? The guppies breeding to keep the population from dying out from the bichir eating them and the bichir(s) eating enough to keep them from overpopulating the tank? It’s my understanding that the bichir(s) will eat till it’s full when it’s hungry but they don’t eat frequently, taking some time to digest food like snakes. There’ll be live planted plants, live floating plants, driftwood and dragon stone for cover. The bichir (or possibly bichirs) will arrive as juveniles so they’ll possibly leave them alone for a while as they grow or will eat very few at the beginning, giving them ample time to build up a nice population
Hi I have 2 guppies in my small tank and introduced 2 amano shrimp. My guppies are absolutely terrified of shrimp, they do not eat the amount they supposed , their movement is spastic and a lot of time they stay in one place trying to hide under filter...what do I do, shall I just try to return the shrimp to seller ?
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you for your response . I got couple more guppies and now they seem more happier, they all wonder around together not trying to hyde, they still shy away from me sometimes as in 'how dare I bring these shrimps to their tank!' 😆 I guess time will tell and hopefully they will get use to them as you said🙂
Thank you very much for your response again. When I wrote the first comment I was panicking and was not sure what to do, so it is really appreciated thank you,❤️ my 4 guppies now completely got used to my 2 shrimp. Now I am getting a snail in a week to help with algae and I wonder if my guppies would get startled again, hope not 🥲
Love your channel, thanks you put out great videos. My experience with guppies has been horrible. Started our fish hobby about 5 months ago with very peaceful tanks having a betta with chilli rasboras, green fire tetras, cory catfish and some nerite snails. Then we got all male guppies about 10 in a 10 gallon tank. And they are the most aggressive fish I have. I can honestly say I don't like them and every day I check to see who's dead and alive. I also check my parameters every day to make sure their environment is good. I swear they are bullies. Is it because they are all Males? I read that you can do an all Male tank. Any advice coz I'm stressed and very frustrated. 😩
i noticed a few trends in my guppy tank with the offsprings over a few months and doing some more research into them they are such a cool fish like how much temperature affects the ratio of male to female offspring but if they are in a female heavy population even if temps are low the body will produce hormones so they have more males and the same variables go into how long they retain sperm and how i can essentially play god in controlling the gender of the offspring i get and you just wouldnt expect such a commonly kept animal to be so biologically interesting
i have 6 platys and i just got 4 guppys and 2 males and 2 females and it been less then 2 weeks since i got them and 1 female gave birth to 5 fry but 1 got eaten
Yep, that's what is going in my 400g indoor pond :D. ...along with a turtle. Will try grow a sizable population in a tub before introducing them to the pond.
I'm doing guppy research to maybe get a 10 gallon tank but I'm not looking to breed them. However, if they do should I just leave the fry in there and let them get eaten or die? lol imma noob
My guppies are fat and I know they aren't pregnant I've had separate tanks for the males and females for about a year now. I cut down from feeding g twice a day to once and I dont put a lot of food in the tank. Idk what to do!! They're in 20 gallon tanks. Water parameters are good and I do t have any love plants yet (I'm working on getting those soon) but ya idk what else to do
@@PrimeTimeAquatics well see. I might have them removed since I ended up with m/f go figure. And they're extremely aggressive. They even have a african twice their size cornered. He's going to the LFS where I got him from. So he can have a better environment. I might just go back to keeping angels and cardnal tetras🤣🤣
@@PrimeTimeAquatics update the convicts are in their own 40 Gallon. They had a peacock cichlid twice their size cornered after they had babies. Yiiikes.
Omg I feel so bad and idk what to do. A family member died and I acquired all her stuff. I highly doubt she knew the right way to house fish, and I think her nurse was the one who fed and got her new ones. Anyway she has this table top 2 and 1/2 gallon tank and after researching I am confident that there is two male guppies in there. One is a dumbo guppie and I’m not quite sure about the other but looks similar to a pink tuxedo guppy? Anyway, they’re chasing each other constantly and clearly not happy. Nipping tails and all. The tank is clean, I changed filters, there is fake plants and two hide rocks, temperature is good…with my little knowledge about fish I went to do more research, and I’m finding out two males together may not be the best thing. They’re my responsibility now, but I have a small apartment and don’t have the space for a bigger tank in here.. is there a way I can keep these two guys happy with this current set up? Should I get one more male? Add more stuff? Maybe add a different species fish? Any advice will be appreciated please!
I would get rid of one of the males. With that size tank it’s really the only thing you can do. If you’re looking to add something - a mystery snail might be cool? 😀
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I plan on getting guppies. I wanted some algae eaters. Was thinking mollies. But, getting conflicting information if they do well together. I might just buy them and let nature take its course.
