Hi Kris, I've followed you for quite a few years and I'm always learning about this fascinating hobby. Your video is superb and the information contained within it is so very valuable. The information below, regarding the mental health benefits are especially very much beneficial. All in all, an incredible introduction to our wonderful hobby. Very well done mate, keep safe and well.
Thanks for this Kris, this is a super helpful video 👍🏼 I’ve been fascinated by metal detecting for years and continuously watched various detectorists on YT… This year I finally started asking around and got a couple of permissions of my own but alas, still no gear yet! This video is very helpful for me in taking the next steps, so thank you sir.
My largest and most fruitful permission came from an email. I started by doing a Google search of local farms then made a list of any that had a website.......If they had a website, they probably used it. And on those websites were a 'contact us' section. So I sent an email to 12 farms (all the same email) and I gained 3 permissions.....3 rejections and the rest didn't reply. But one of the permissions said that they had denied permission for years to various people and groups.....but when they read my email, they got a sense of who I was and that I was responsible. They gave me permission there and then.......it's over 400 acres. It really does work with the right tone of email 👍
@@historydeantected I can do one better. I will write it here (omit names and areas) Good afternoon. My name is xxxxxxxx I am a enquiring as to whether you would be willing to allow myself and a colleague (xxxxxxxxxx) to metal detect on any of your land. We are both respectful and mature individuals. We currently have around 80 acres of farmland that we detect from 3 different permissions. Two in xxxxxxx and one in xxxxxxxx, but are looking to expand our permissions a little so that we may be able to detect for more of the year. We are both paid members of the NCMD (National Council of Metal Detectorists) and abide strictly by the rules of the membership. We are both fascinated by history and what secrets the land keeps. If you would be interested in seeing any finds of interest then we would be happy to show you. And perhaps anything of significant history would make for an interesting addition to your farms history? We appreciate that you don't know either of us, and that allowing permission has a great to do with trust, and so we are happy to come to meet with you and answer any questions you may have, if it would help with your decision. Thank you for taking the time to read this. And we look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks Xxxxxxx & Xxxxxxxx
Hey kris love your videos. I've been detecting around Devon for the past year or so and I would say not to forget about campsites in regards to gaining permission. I equally have abit of approach anxiety with the whole thing so I usually stick to sending emails I've had a few replies from local campsites which have yielded some good things. It's abit of a numbers game but certainly worth a go. Also remember to check local byelaws. I found a local byelaw regarding a canal near where I live which permitted metal detecting. I don't think anyone had bothered to check as there was a load of silver predecimal coins to be found.
A topic of importance is target recovery. Particularly covering up your hole and leaving the ground as good as you found it. Leave no trace. The quickest way to get kicked off of permission, or shut it down for others on public land (parks, for example), is to leave holes or unsightly marks. On fields, holes risk breaking legs of livestock. In lawns (parks, private homes, etc) it kills the grass and just plain looks ugly. Metal detectorists should be good stewards of the land, and by doing so keeps the hobby open for others.
Brilliant! Thank you for this video. Me and my pal went out for the first time the other day. We found sometimes that it was making noise and there’s nowt to be found 🤔 It was fun though still! This advice will definitely help us for next time 🎉
another reason- when concentration levels are lost and finds rate are low even tho i have great land is tiredness and over detecting, get a good nights sleep prior to going out the next-day, have breaks and make sure u take food and drink... brilliant vid many people will learn lots from this
Well I never show up, to a farmers house with out a brand spanking new pair of good decent leather work gloves!!! always got permission to hunt just being thoughtful of there work!!! Give it a try!!!
Great content, planning on getting a Quest q30 or q30+. Would like to know your thoughts on using headphones in general. Especially wired or wireless option for the Quest.
Here's the playlist to all the videos: ru-vid.com/group/PLEwdKNSuOkGyRELnRYqhSNp5YQ6PJjccO But the details for the events are on Facebook I believe. Look up Joan Allen Events :D
Hi Kris, when you start detecting on a field do you have a plan of action ?....For example, do you start by detecting around the edges or do you 'Union Jack' it....basically, how do you approach it ?
@@Addictedtobleeps you're so welcome. Your channel has been so successful, I know you have been doing it a long time! I watched a much older video about permissions not long ago! I am merely a newbie but trying to build the channel, hopefully I'll get some interesting stuff on the weekend when out! Take care!
Heyy I trust your opinion very much so!!!! I'm on my third spade all of them have been recommended and they have been rubbish! I'm not gonna name names!! ..I keep going back to my cheapo roughneck small and light... Who can suggest a decent full size LIGHT WEIGHT strong spade!
Thank you very much for some pretty useful information on areas where it might be best to detect. Would really enjoy joining one of you rallies at some point. Take care Alan.
25.22 where to look - is there a gate - preferrably an old gate - is there a matching one over the far side? Perhaps that was a track or road of some description. - - Detecting on a beach I'd have put number one as Know the tides! In the UK, we can have as much as 60 feet variation between high and low, so if you are happily detecting on a sand bar, you might find you have a two mile swim back to dry land because the tide came in round you! - - Accessories - you forgot the spade! and the digging knife/trowel! My preference is to have the pinpointer and knife attached to me at all times, as well, by a lanyard of some description, (coily or spring-wound are best, then they are less prone to getting tangled in the brambles!) so if it gets dropped, it will follow you around until you notice! - - Somebody else mentioned insurance, not for you, but for if their prize ram steps into a rabbit hole, breaks a leg, and you get the blame and the vet bill!
I’ve found double d coils like q30 and tornado on ace 250 needs you to go over a signal at 90 180 and 360 degrees to get a clear picture of what’s occurring
Hi Chris Just a quick question I have a q30 but I'm looking to purchase a legend in your opinion as you use one is it a much better machine and a good step up?
Hi Mark! Yes, absolutely. The quality is reflected in the price. The Q30 is a brilliant beginners machine, but doesn’t have the power of the Legend. One thing, though. I wasn’t impressed with the Legend on the beach. I feel the 30 is better suited in this environment. Not sure if you’re considering doing beaches, but I thought I’d mention it. Keep your 30 if you get the Legend, though. It’s a great back up!
Thanks Chris I was going to ask you if I saw you at the last joan allen dig but I heard later you was in the opposite field. Keep up the videos I do look forward to them.
Great video Kris some wise words from your experience there! One thing to mention in the UK is that you cannot detect every beach. Some are private so would need to be treated as land permission with relevant authority from owner. Also where a beach is within an SSI or AONB then detecting would be forbidden. Where a council owns a beach and the head of the beach comes to private land then you may only detect between average low and average high water (try and work that out when you dont know a beach!!). A lot of councils maintain a list of where you may/may not detect i.e. Arun council lists beaches you may and notes one you may not owing to SSI status www.arun.gov.uk/metal-detecting/ Crown estates which also owns a fair few miles of beach and foreshore has relaxed its requirements and asks for responsibility where it used to insist on permits like the thames foreshore mudlarks require but the growth in popularity made this an administration nightmare. Thanks again Kris and hope you dont mind me adding this for clarity within UK.
Where do you get the aerial footage from and also I’ve seen ancient maps of places which I’ve no idea how to access? Other than pay👺great video as I’m an absolute beginner.
When looking for permission insurance is important and tell the farm owner you'll use disinfectant on your wellies before going on his land, first impressions last.
Dont worry. From my experience if you want to interact you can. But if your bit of an introvert like me. Ive been on few group/club digs and sometimes ive just rocked up hung around just listening as i didn’t think i had enough knowledge to be saying anything. But as soon as your released on the field most of the time you’re able to just go your own way. Everyone is in theyre own little world. You can stay or leave when ya want and nobody will get pissed off. And as the others see your face a few times you will find that every one is very friendly with different levels of experience that you can learn from.
I've been detecting for a couple of months now, most of which are with a local club I found on Facebook. There are loads. You request to join the event , turn up and pay on the day. You can socialise or just go off on your own. Generally people are very approachable. Good luck.
@@silversurfer3202 I'm guessing you're across the pond. It appears rules are different over there and a large percentage of land over here is loaned out to clubs.
Seen it happen on a few occasions now. Been shot at myself (well just over my head) from a farmer that had given me permission, but decided that he didn’t want me there that day because they were hunting birds. Instead of walking all the way over to tell me, he just shot at me instead. Much more effective 😂 But honestly, I’ve heard a few accounts of people being shot at. Especially if they don’t have permission. Some farmers are off their rockers.
Had a q30 1st and loved it. But noone else on digs new much about them numbers setting etc. upgraded to a nox because it was so common. Still think the ergonomics of the q30 i better than the nox.
