Thank you so much for this very well explained series--It's the best multicam how-to I've found! I'm facing a challenge where Premiere refuses to show me my audio waveforms on my multicams. Most tutorials say to use "Render and Replace," but I am working on a documentary with more than 130 hours of footage, and this takes way too long. My workaround has been to flatten the audio tracks in my main stringout, and then link the resulting "naked" audio clips to their corresponding multicam video clip. But this seems to defeat much of the purpose of using multicams, since adjustments I make in the audio tracks of the multicam (sync adjustments etc) will not propogate to the audio in my edited sequences. I'd appreciate any advice!

I never worked with merge clips. I've always use multicams. I don't think I am missing out using merge clips.

You most certainly aren’t missing anything. Multi cams are preferable the vast majority of the time.

hi Brian thank you for this. never used merge clips forthat same reason it limits your flexibility. would have loved you to compare even more options like nesting and linking. also comparing other softwares versions. like compound clip in resolve is so amazing for large project workflows

Do you flatten the multicams themselves in their bins or find them in the timeline and flatten? Trying to prep for online running into issues with multicams in the timeline their video disappearing when I select and flatten them.

Hi There. I'm struggling with something which I think should be simple but can't find how to do it. I am an FCPX editor learning Premiere and currently working my way through multicam projects. How do I, after creating a multicam sequence (let's say it's an hour-long interview, 2 cameras-lots of stop/starts) break it down into manageable and descriptive named clips that I can put in bins. Is that possible? If not how do you quickly access alternative takes or sections of interview that the client wants to see? IN FCPX its a simple process of loading the multicammed interview and then flagging and keywording the sections of interview you need which auto creates clips.

Sadly, Premiere does not make that process as easy as Final Cut. It's possible to make subclips, then name and add metadata. Alternatively a lot of Premiere editors will organise long interviews in a selects sequence - a sequence used purely for organising media. Then they will copy clips to the sequence where they build their edit. DaVinci Resolve has a similar keyboarding system to Final Cut that will allow you to make portions of long takes and assign keywords and other metadata. Hope the above is helpful.

Thanks for the video - I tried to flatten the multicam and sometimes it works for the audio but most of the time when I flatten the audio just disappears. This has been a big problem in the past two documentary - what is the sequence setting and audio setting you are using to create your multicam to make sure the flatten feature works as intended?

Hey Sergio - Brian here. This has to do with both how you built the multicam and your audio configuration, and can be a little complicated to explain, especially on YT comments here without image replies. So basically, if you check out the contents of your multicam, assuming you built it properly (and that's just to suggest you basically used the Create Multicam tool and let Premiere handle the rest for you) you'll see that there are some tracks that are UNMUTED and some that are MUTED. The MUTED tracks won't pass through, those are probably original camera audio and have been muted out as the multicam favors dual system audio. The UNMUTED tracks are passing through to the main edit timeline and those are the ones that will flatten. Now, there are some problems with flattening to be aware of. 1) If you unlink the audio from the video (we show it in this video) the audio tracks become a "nest" and are no longer a multicam. They can't be flattened anymore, but it's very easy to fix. Simply select all of your audio clips in your timeline, right click - multicam - ENABLE. Then again select all, right click - multicam - FLATTEN. This will make it so that the unlinked audio tracks you left in your timeline flatten to the available audio passing through them. 2) If you got rid of any tracks (say you only used A1 and A2 however your multicam actually had 8 tracks of audio in it), those missing tracks A3-A8 won't magically flatten out into your timeline. You'll need to do that manually, and it's just part of organizing your timeline as you go. Let me know if that helps you!

Incredible tutorial, love it. ❣❣ I do a lot of dialogue scenes, with one camera and two sources of audio. Sometimes I sent a AAF for better sound. Do you think it´s better to use multcam also in Da Vinci?? Or merge?? Thank u in advance.

Good tutorial here! I have a question: In a situation where an assistant is doing some syncing along the project... is it possible to consolidate them after? I have sometimes new timelines that are using Multicams clips that were synced at the begining (that I also have on my side) and when I import the derush from the assistant, these MC are duplicating in the project bin (but the content inside theses MC are linking to the good original clips, not dupe). I'm importing the new sequences with Media Browser method.

I've tried syncing a video with mutliple audio tracks with multicam after watching this video. But the enormous drawback you don't seem to mention is that mutlicams only play the first audio track. It will not play any other track even though the waveform is there. You need to matchframe or flatten to hear other tracks you might want. Which is a great inconvenience. I didn't find any workaround online. Hoping someone at filmeditingpro might help because I started editing a trailer following your advice but am now at loss.

Hey Lulu - Brian here. That's sort of true and sort of not true and it's all about HOW you create the multicam. We don't go into it in much detail in this video because we've got some other videos with much deeper complexity that explain this concept on the horizon. So let me break it down in short. First, when you make a multicam, Premiere automatically favors audio from ONE SOURCE, meaning if you sync two cameras and a dual system audio, it'll favor the dual system audio, and MUTE out the two cameras, even if they have waveforms. This is because Premiere assumes anything that isn't a true audio source is simply scratch audio. That CAN be a problem if you, the editor, know that it wasn't scratch audio at all and you wanted to include those sources in the pass through of the multicam. So you can do a couple of things here. First, you can manually modify the multicam. It's a bit of a beast if you've never done it before though, but you will need to open up the Audio Track Mixer in your panels, increase the number of audio tracks, pan them left and right and change the sends to go to the right audio output configurations. Then outside the multcam you need to select that item in your bin, and select Modify - Audio Channels and increase the number of audio channels to whatever you want. Without a specific example it's pretty tough to explain. Instead, what you can do is little hack, but make a piece of blank video with as many ### of audio tracks that you want, so lets say you know you have 8 tracks of audio you want to send out of the multicam. So just using Premiere, make a 5 second piece of black video in a sequence that is an 8 track multichannel audio sequence, and export it out of Premiere making sure to set the audio to be 8 channels. Reimport it, and then force Premiere to make it into a multicam using In Points. Once it does that, you'll have an 8 channel multicam, you can remove the piece of dummy video you were using, and paste your synced clips into it, now you have 8 channels to work with. This works with however many audio channels you need. Pro tip - I have already done this... FOR EVERYTHING. I have a bin of multicams in my template projects with 100's of premade blank multicams in it, every frame size, every audio configuration I could ever want. If I ever need to do something kinda tricky with multicams, I just duplicate the one I want and paste my contents into it, super simple.

Or just double click the multi cam clip in the timeline. The nest will open up and you can activate/deactivate any of the tracks you want.
