I seriously need to improve my dogs walk. Since Sammy is a scent dog he can’t help But to chase squirrel or cats outside. I even took a bad tumble when he gave chase of a squirrel. This was a good lesson for me.
Depends on the dog and how reactive it is but try not to be dependent on tools but work on techniques. Improve everything at home and in the back yard first and use a simple snap on collar and a six foot leash.
Really great video and advice. My 3 year old lab is reactive but more towards people. It's definitely an anxious reactivity. She likes to bark and jump up toward, seemingly to try and make them go away. She's never gone to bite anyone etc.. and actually the few people that actually just don't worry and get down and take the time to let her get to know them, she's then usually super friendly with and trying to lick their faces haha! People that talk to her and even just look at her make her worse. I'm quite a shy person myself so I often find it quite difficult to just say to people not to come over or not to talk to her. I usually just say "She's alright, she's just noisy." I think it's my own personal thing in my head to try and get people to understand she's not a nasty dog (even though she might look it at the time!), she's the most wonderful, sweet and sensitive girl. It would be my absolute dream to be able to take her anywhere without worry of her barking at everyone, like into pet shops, dog friendly cafes etc.. and even better if people could come up to her and give her a love without her reacting, to show off her true personality. When in a place where I can throw her ball she often doesn't even care about anyone else, she's super focused on the ball. But any other time like walking along a pavement in our village (Often there is no escape route apart from going backwards as it's path only on 1 side) then she will be very reactive when someone is heading towards us. I have actually been working on the walking with her, doing exactly what you have shown, so I will keep up with that. She's very obedient at home.
The way you feel and the way you are is a very common reason how she will behave and react. If you are a shy person, she will mirror that. If you are nervous when seeing someone on the street, she will mirror that feeling as well. A sensitive dog like her needs a handler who is confident and sure about everything. If you see your dog is behaving badly, that's a sign that you may not be in the right state of mind. If you see that she is behaving great, that will mean that you are feeling correct. You can get cues form her and she can get cues from you. You both can learn and improve from each other. I have many videos that I talk about this part which you can watch and benefit. One of them is this one. I will share more videos soon. You both can learn and improve from each other.
@@SaroDogTraining Thanks so much, yes I totally understand. I do try to not show when I'm feeling anxious in situations and am wary to not pull tight on the lead etc.. but I think she can see through the act most times, she's very intuitive and clever.
Dogs are excellent to let us know how we feel and what we need to fix. Focus on improving your intentions and energy and you are going to automatically improve your dog's behaviour.
Our shepherd is turning two very soon and he's still pulling a lot on the leash. I've tried for months on end to train him not to get in front of me, telling him no, walking backwards until he's by my side again (as shown at 10:50) but with no luck. He just doesn't seem to catch on. I've just about given up on ever getting my dog to walk without pulling.
Our rescue dog Benji is 3 years old and very reactive towards other dogs. What is the best thing to do if a dog run right to him? He usually just attacks them. Is there a video? Thanks
We have 4-5 visits per day by groups of deer. My 7 month old Scotch Collie (some English Shepherd mixed in) goes NUTS when he sees them. What can I do to correct this??? Also, since I starter using a prong collar he is fantastic on walks...except when deer show up. What is your opinion of the prong collar ?
If you hated spiders, would you enjoy being exposed to spiders? Would we be addressing the issue by exposing you to spiders or would we making it worse? We don't need to expose you to the spiders but we can teach you to handle it by taking small steps towards it. Step one, don't get near the spiders. Step two, work with a professional to learn how to handle it.
sir i have a 4 month old gsd..... he know all command like sit, down, leave, come & all that..... but is not listening me...... he ignores me.....can i use choke belt to train him??
It's not the tool which is going to change the behaviour. There are few things that are happening. First and foremost, your puppy is just too young and also your expectations are too high. I explain more in the following video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rtRCN7UnI3o.html
Well you haven’t shown anything…just talking and seems like that dog knows you. Using a dog you’ve never met that shows aggression is how you prove what you say!
If you try to understand dog training and behaviour, you will understand that you or me or even the best dog trainer in the world, won't be able to change an aggressive dog's behaviour if you don't have relationship with the dog, if the dog doesn't trust you and if you are not able to change the dog's mood. If you don't have these 3 things, you are not changing a dog's beahviour, you are flooding the dog and shutting it down.
Wow…this man turned tables on these dogs in minutes with other dogs and people!! You talking about exactly, your criticism of his techniques should help all doubts. You can’t show instead of saying something out your mouth.
