I started my handyman company last November when I had to move to a new home in a hurry. My rent doubled on the move and I lost my income at the same time. Jumped in the deep end hard and fast. Like Daryl said "I needed money now." 5 months later I am clearing 10K a month. Mind blown, life changed and changing. If you have the skills and drive to learn and hustle, the opportunities are out there for you! Good luck all! You were a huge inspiration for me getting started, thank you Daryl!

It’s amazing what you can do when your back is against the wall. That’s why I say everyone needs to have a skill regardless of their current work situation. Congratulations and I’m wishing you much success.

@Alex B I built a website to give some legitimatecy, then posted on Craigslist for snow removal during Xmas. It snowed a ton, so people called. A of them became customers for other projects. I also put a magnet with logo and phone number on my truck. Being out doing work and flying my flag has led to lots more work. I pushed HARD in the start to get moving and build some momentum.

@@DarylTheFINISHER you're absolutely right, starting out on your own for anything as far as self employment is scary. There's always the naysayers, and those that call you lazy for not wanting a regular corporate job, but you have to try to break free from the W-2 slavery pipeline cause that's exactly what it is.

What’s up finisher? FYI - your videos are getting pushed to me, it’s working. Any light you can share on how long it took you/others you know to ramp up their handyman business? In terms of a full time work load? Also, what would say you average # of jobs per day/week. We know it varies but what should you be gearing up towards? Thanks for the video
@DarylTheFINISHER

As much as I appreciate Google trapping you, I appreciate you watching. From the time I started the business to the time I quit my job was a total of 5 months. By then I was making enough to cover all my expenses. Unfortunately I struggled with scheduling and not charging enough but the work was there. Even early on once you're at a customer's house and they see you do good work they'll ask you to give them an estimate for other work. This along with your advertising compounds on itself. At the same time my bills are uncommonly high because I have a large family so most people will cover their bills pretty quickly. When I'm doing small jobs, I usually have at least two scheduled per day. Small jobs range anywhere from $150 to about $400.

@@DarylTheFINISHER appreciate the info. I’m at the edge, looking over … lol. I’m prepping, getting ready to grind out the startup period. I should’ve done the tip toe but I got my own house to fix! Pick your poison type deal. Some good reminders. I do agree on the magnets though - many bonuses - swap multiple business signs & if you need to sell… a lot easier than taken off a car wrap. Anyways appreciate the info/reminders

Me and my husband are wanting to start a handyman business. There’s a lot of fear in starting. Did you have living expenses covered for a certain time just in case? We only have a month saved up of living expenses and would need to purchase a van or truck. We live very minimal and debt free so going into debt for a vehicle and hoping jobs come in is very nerve wracking! I know my husband could be successful because he knows a couple property managers he does plumbing for (currently at a plumbing company). Just not knowing how long it would take for that money to start rolling in
@DarylTheFINISHER
@DarylTheFINISHER 9 месяцев назад
Unfortunately nobody can guarantee anything when it comes to when you start making money. As a matter of fact, when you work with property managers, usually you have to do the work out front and then they pay you later. I went full-time after about 4 months of being part-time and was able to cover my expenses immediately. If you can get on with home Depot for referral and do installs that will definitely help you supplement direct calls . Especially with him being a plumber because they only let plumbers install faucets and sinks. The way the economy is now though, I would probably just start part-time and market my business everywhere.

@DarylTheFINISHER

It depends on what state you live in. Unless you're a plumber though I'm not sure why someone would do that. There's too much liability and insurance might not cover you.

Man you lost me when you said you don’t want your phone ringing constantly at the start. Take the work when it comes. You only let customers down when you have scheduling issues. If you are 3 weeks out just let them know plain and simple. Most people will wait for your services. Get as much work as you possibly can is the best advise. YES it’s hard when you have a crap ton of work and calls. Very hard and frustrating to schedule and deal with but it’s great when you learn how to schedule right.
@DarylTheFINISHER
@DarylTheFINISHER 10 месяцев назад
I understand what you're saying but just taking all the work that comes is how you end up with a full schedule of pure garbage work and customers that don't want to pay anything. There are a lot of factors involved including experience and level of desperation. What good is it to have your phone ringing like crazy but you struggle to estimate jobs, evaluate customers or just don't know how long jobs really take? Your approach will definitely work for some but I've seen a lot of guys tank their business right from the start by trying to do too much. I might not agree with you, but I do appreciate you taking the time to give some feedback.
