Love this! I added the drive as you did here. I'm using with the freewell 15 pro case so I can connect nd filter to the case while the ssd wallet is attached to the back. A great compact filmmaking setup!

This is my go to setup now. I use the Crucial X6, X9, and X10 drives for video because of their speed. Also, I have tested and the T7 works OK too. I just like the small Crucial drives that are workhorses for me. 4TB gives me more than enough headroom recording ProRes 422 Log.

That’s a pretty nice setup as well. Still a little bulky for my taste because you still have to deal with a larger form factor but a still very reliable build indeed that will give you consistent speeds and long term confidence.

First time I’m seeing this video and this is the same exact set up. The same case and all I have I wish I could have post a picture. I use. It was my first thoughts idk why folks were sticking magnets to the hard drive. A wallet is the smartest idea!

All the other solutions I saw online didn’t make sense to me… there’s absolutely no way I’m using this expensive thing without a case and there’s no real practical sense if you can’t carry it around in your pocket 😂. I also use the same wallet and usb c extender with a usb-c Apple SD card reader and a 512GD microSD card. I am also using the wallet with a Samsung T7 1TB SSD and a flat 6" usb-c cable that conveniently connects the drive to the phone.

Excellent idea! Unfortunately much more expensive here in europe considering that the usb drive is 100€ and the angle is about 12€ but still cheaper than buying an iPhone with more storage inside.

Thanks my friend🍻. But Wow Europe has it rough! 😧. That’s a noticeable price difference. But yes it is still much cheaper than buying an iPhone with larger storage, plus you have much more versatility for accessing your media, replacement, etc… it definitely has proven to be a worthy investment for me thus far. The drive used in the video may be sold out though… but just in case, I’ve listed some solid alternatives in my pinned comment and video description. You can take a look and see if they are available for hopefully 🤞🏾 cheaper on your end.

A full sized SSD cannot fit inside the MagSafe wallet. Only USB 3.2 Gen 2 rated USB drives (as shown in the video) will fit. If you need to use full sized SSDs, you will require to use another method to affix it to the phone such as attaching a MagSafe ring like this 1: amzn.to/3uri6mu Or this 1: amzn.to/3STWh9q

Great video!! Are you getting any dropped frames with using your SSD Flash Drive?? I bought the same setup except for the Phone case I went with the dbrand Grip case as it has a stronger mag safe magnet. Already got the case and wallet and I have to say the magnet holds really well and in the place. Now I have to wait till Sunday to get the SSD Flash Drive and the USB-C Extender. Going to do some 4K60 pro LOG test to see if I get any dropped frames once I have the full setup in my hands. Hopefully all will work well.

Thanks bro! 😎. Awesome setup! The Dbrand case is a great buy as well. The magnet on the Torras case I used in the video is pretty strong as well plus it doubles a versatile stand. But as for the SSD flash drive you will love the hell outta it! I’ve done several filming sessions with it in the same 4k 60fps ProRes AppleLog with no issues at all. No dropped frames, no nothing. I even just plugged it out, plugged it into my Mac, color graded and edited the footage directly from it, rendered the footage right back to it, then viewed it back on the phone. All from the drive. So you’ll be good to go!

Like I said in the video it does get warm because it’s an all metal chassis so it is acting like a heat sink of sorts to get the heat away from the chip. The wallet also helps to keep the heat away from your fingers and the phone as well. But aside from that I haven’t had any issues so far. Copying files and filming to it has been a breeze!

And to add further information I forgot to mention that I actually gave it a solid field test… filmed directly to it in the absolute maximum 4k 60fps ProRes Apple Log for over 15 mins. I simply plugged it out of the phone and connected it to my computer, color graded it in Davici Resolve 18, rendered the video directly back to the drive and it worked flawlessly! No problems at all. And it won’t get any worse than that in terms of use case. So I can recommend this setup with absolute confidence as a true no compromise affordable build! Like I said though, it does get warm, however it is due to the drive having a completely metal chassis that is getting the heat away from the chip which is a good thing. The wallet mod I showed in the video is the perfect solution because it keeps the heat away from your fingers and the phone so it’s perfectly comfortable to hold for long periods no problem. So you’re going to enjoy the hell outta this thing!

Nice video... Out of curiosity, which iPhone storage size do you have? And when you use the Black Magic App, what's the total internal recording time that you have for ProRes? Just asking as I’m try to decide between the 256/512 GB storage on a budget. My gut feeling is to get the 256GB & copy your SSD setup. (P.S - I’m from Mobay - Reading in JA😎)

Respect for watching bredda 👊🏾. I actually have a 256gb version. I primarily use the Blackmagic Camera App as well. I highly recommend using the setup I have. It’s not worth spending the extra money for the 512gb if you ask me. Also as a pro tip… use the h.265 format for Apple ProRes in the BackMagic Camera app. You will save tons of storage.

Any ideas on how to fit a magnetic battery pack on this setup? I feel like it would make it too thick for that adapter

Good question and quite a unique use case. But the only way I can think of to pull that off is by using a super slim MagSafe battery pack such as this 1: amzn.to/48oPYzd Then glueing the wallet I suggested in the video on the back of it and then using the setup as suggested and maybe try this usb C adapter which seems wide enough (don’t quote me on that 😅): amzn.to/3TLL8Ij I recommend using the same wallet and SSD flash drive with usb c gen 3.2 that I have in my pinned comment and description for this hypothetical combo. Hopefully that all helps or at least points you in the right direction 😅.

No it definitely won’t. That mod I did with the wallet will only fit flash drives and SSD’s of similar sizes and shape like the 1 I used in the video. The T7 is far too big.

Hi with BlackMagic on iPhone 15 pro, can I shoot in 1080p H264 in the same time storing in the SSD drive ? because on iPhone 15 pro apps It is limited to Pro Res only.

Yes you definitely can. That’s my standard setup for filming in the Blackmagic app. 1080p or even 4k with h.264 or h.265 without ProRes. Works flawlessly.

Unfortunately it won’t work. This setup will only work on the iPhone 15 Pro series. The Transcend looks like excellent value at a glance! Go for it! Just bear in mind the potential limitations of heat which may affect performance… (I saw that it has a 60 degree Celsius limit before starting to throttle) and I also saw that it has a maximum 85gb SLC cache limit as well which may also affect performance if you’re transferring very large files beyond that size. All in all though it looks like a really solid drive and it’s a solid brand I’ve also trusted for years. The price isn’t bad either (more expensive than the Maxone though). The Maxone is cheaper, is made of all metal so I would assume it would dissipate heat better, it also has a more elegant design and has no temperature limit to be seen so although on paper it may seem slower… it may be faster in terms of sustained speeds for transferring and reading larger files.

No it won’t work. The iPhone 12 has the Lightning port. So unfortunately this setup will not work.

⁠unfortunately no it still won’t work because Apple doesn’t allow you to film directly to drives outside of the iPhone 15 Pro series. I assure you the connector was not bent. The drive naturally angles downwards from this setup. Pressure on the connector is 1 of the first things I checked. There is no strain on the connector and the port itself is made of titanium as shown by JerryRigEverything in his video so either way it is very durable.
