I just finished reading ‘Big Magic” after watching your book recommendation video and oh my gosh it has changed so much about how I feel about my work and creativity and given me so much hope for my work. THANK YOU so much for recommending it I never would have chosen it on my own. Now I have just started “Art and Fear”
I'm just coming to the end of Big Magic which I bought after seeing Minnie recommend it. It's so inspiring and has made a huge difference to my attitude towards my creativity. I'm now recommending it to all my friends. Minnie's influence spreads far and wide. :)
I'm so glad you've got a thing for Faber Castell pens. I have a HUUUUGE soft spot for Faber Castell. My sister lives not far from their factory in Stein, near Nürnberg. The window frames of their factory are all primary colours, you can go visit the Faber Castell family's castle and, of course, the Faber Castell factory shop. O! M! G! Pen and pencil heaven! You should totally go, Minnie, and do a vlog from there.
OMG, the sharpener! That is the best sharpener. It makes such a big difference that I will literally not ever use anything else. Somehow it is a total game changer, and leveled up my art, which I know makes no sense, but somehow it's true. I did not know how much energy and effort I was throwing away until I discovered Mobius and Rupert. I now buy them as gifts for people who art, and I keep art least three backups at all times, in case I misplace mine. Never going back!
I will say if you want to start with gouache and already have watercolours I have a great tip. If you have white gouache you can easily make any color opaque and you can actually get really dark colors. I will also say with real gouache I’ve found that my medium price gouache (it the Lascaux 12 set) are fine and rewet on a pallet brilliantly except the black which separates so I have a w&N design black.
I had to laugh when you said you had a lot of colors but really only used 5 when painting. I'm the same, I do like seeing the convenience colors as they're inspiring, but when working, it's so much easier to just work with a few. Color mixing is faster and there's less thinking and more doing. Also PR122 rules. I would also die for quinacridone magenta. Possibly PB29 too. ^^
So excited for your new book! I love love love Faber-Castell Pitt pens - the "greys" set is fantastic for urban sketching. Pro tip: the brush tips are double-ended, so when the original one gets a bit frayed, you can remove it (e.g. with tweezers) and put it back in the other way round, doubling the lifespan of the pen 😀
Great supplies, I love and use many of them! I'm very particular about watercolor pencils and spent quite some time trying out different brands, the absolute winner for me is the Albrecht Durer series by Faber Castell. They're pricey but I only use a few colors and enjoy them so much!
very cute video. this is a little off topic but i bought your blue mushroom print and your spinach print a few years ago and i finally was able to hang them up today and they look fantastic!! It's so lovely to have them up and just know you continue to inspire and enhance lives with your art.
Can't wait for your book! I love how precise and straight to the point you are in your videos. They aren't ramble-y and time consuming and I love that. Always interesting, always well-edited, and I can just tell that you put a lot of thought and work into them. Thanks for consistently putting out great content.
Wow Minnie. This was so informative. You do wonder what others have in their arsenal and just what works for them. Thank you for sharing. I’m particularly taken with the two handmade sketchbooks, I love the concept so much.
I really enjoy your videos, Minnie. Thanks for creating them. :) I'm currently enjoying a book you recommended (Daily Painting). So funny that I found out about it from someone in UK when the author is from Texas where I lived for 30 years and my family still lives. 🤩
Faber-Castell pens are so great, I love their coloured pens too as they work well with polymer clay. I haven't used gouache in around 20 years - but you're making me very tempted to give it another go. Btw, loving the new set up, Minnie - it's so calming to look at.
That's so cool that they work well with polymer clay as well! Ugh, they're just the best pens! And thank you, I'm really enjoying my new space as well, glad it comes through well on camera 😊
I definitely want to try Sketchbook Co. I've admired your books from them every time you show them. I've had the worst luck with washi tape over the past couple years. They either peel off the paper immediately, or they tear the paper (or BOTH somehow).
So glad you're going to try one of their sketchbooks, I honestly don't think I could do without one in my arsenal. Sorry you've had such trouble with washi tape! Is it the same regardless of what paper you're using?
I had to give up on Stillman and Birn sketchbooks. Ordered 4 and ALL of them tore near the center line when laying flat because the binding glue was so poorly done. Ugh. Now I'm addicted to the Strathmore 500 series. Finally happy with a sketchbook!
Set aside one hour a day to make art, any type. After a month it will be habit and you will drastically increase your output. Family and friends may buy a few pieces off you and your career has begun. I love this channel. So many great ideas. My favorite art books: - Art and Fear by David Bayles - Daily Painting by Carol Marine - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson
This was so lovely! I've used quite a few on this list and also love them. Also- I think the way you do ads in your videos is SO well done, very classy & relevant, it never feels like a cut to the ad and then cut back to what we came here for- I can tell you tie in the ads you do to the topic of your video and it's so appreciated!!! And every time it's a Skillshare ad it motivates me to get back to that class I left half completed :)
The velvettouch round 4 is probably my most used brush as well. There really isn't anything special about it, and it's a soft point which is usually the last thing people are looking for, however there is just something about the spring and balance.. that soft point makes edges flow on so smooth, and it holds just the right amount of water. I've gone through about four of them. It's THE brush I reach for whenever I need a brush to do any kind of utility work.
Hi fellow artist! 🎨I just saw your art and name on the cover of a Strathmore Mixed Media paper pad. 🎉Congratulations! 👏 It is just so cool to be looking for new supplies and recognize the artist on the product’s cover. 😃 Best wishes to you in your other career related opportunities. 🍀
I'm so excited to read your book when it comes out!! Also I'll have to try some of those sketch books that you mentioned in this, I especially love the look of the hand made Sketch Book Co. one 😍
What a great video ... thank you Minnie! It is so fun to see what supplies different artists prefer and it so fun to try a new resource. I love the Stillman and Birn sketchbooks - the paper quality is so nice in them, and the fact that they have many choices is nice too. Hope you are settling into your new home and that you are loving it. Stay safe and well. x oh! you mentioned a book coming out - wow - congratulations!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it :) And thank you for all your kind words. I'm absolutely loving our new home 😊😊 There are moments everyday where I just have to stop whatever I'm doing and feel truly grateful for this space.
Great video! I'll definitely be getting some of these supplies for myself. Your sketchbook book sounds so exciting! I can't wait to hear more about it and to get it when it comes out.
Hi Minnie! I am watching a show currently that I think you would really like- it’s called “Severance” and it’s on Apple TV+. It’s about people who get a chip in their mind that separates their work memories from their home memories and then things get twisty from there. Anyway- thought you might like it! ❤️
Lovely video. I just went through all my orange paints and I do NOT have Quinacridone burnt orange. I will take your advice and order it for sure. I can't wait to swatch it out and see how it looks. Thanks so much!
Very helpful and informative video thank you. Congratulations on your upcoming book👍👍. And omg your mini handmade sketchbook is adorable. I used the link in your description box to purchase it, but it’s not displaying the one that you showed us 😢.
omg those sketchbooks are so cute!!! i can't wait for that book about sketchbooks!!! they're my most favorite tool to always change up and I am also still trying to find my home so maybe i shall take a peek at the one you love now!! i've got a whole drawer of daniel smith tubes that are my life they're so pretty :) plus holbein, i love them and their products they're so nice :)
It is really funny to me that most of people get an ensemble of paint color then go smaller and smaller until they only use a couple. I think it is a normal process toward knowing your colors and composition of them, especially if you don't have a ''professionnal'' approach to it from the start. I always used 4 colors and tone with oil paint, which are exactly or almost the same color you are using with gouache. Also, Faber Castell 🥰
If you received a dislike from me please ignore it! My fingers slipped when I wanted to press like! Such a great video Minnie! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and your favorite paints and tools! Can’t wait to order your book when it is published :)
Can't wait to read your book, Minnie! It made me so excited when you said that cause I love sketchbooks as well 😍 - also I'm working on a Skillshare class/workshop about sketchbooks hehe
Lovely video slowly going into Gouache but for coloring purposes but I love the faber castel the only problem I have with them they're very expensive 🙈🤕but I do love them
Thank you for sharing - as always an amazing, relalxing video XD I love seeing what has worked for you. DS Quinacridone magenta and paynes grey are actually bae lol. I'm excited to read your book! You ever so gently dropped that massive news! Amazing!
Hey Minnie, Hahnemühle is a German brand and I try to explain the pronunciation to you :) let's split it in hahne and mühle which makes it easier. Hahn means cock whilst mühle means mill, so it's kind of a cock-mill probably 🤣 hahn is just a long flat german "A", as in "yard" (I don't know any better example). The "ü" in Mühle is probably complicated to non-Germans, but it sounds like an u (as in uber) mixed with an e or an i. It's also a long vowel. The vowels e are barely pronounced, they are kinda reduction vowels. So it's hahn(e)mühl(e) :)
LMBO! I was thinking the other day that it would be great if Minnie styled her hair in a big afro-puff on the top of her head. And here you are... LOL! Congrats on your own/new house!!!
*laughing* I know us artists go gaga over art suplies which is like CANDY to us ...but we do stick with a small favorite color palette & certain brushes........so WHY do we feel we 'always' need to have one of everysingle art product, brand & type out here???? LMFAO.......BTW....they have "pencil holders' for those short pencils.........LOL
