TBF, there's a scientist in Halo 4 that mentions how the mantis is used as a mech loader when not equipped for combat. I think most people agree that while mechs aren't the best for combat, they are pretty handy for logistics work.

I was gonna bs a reason for the mantis but it doesn't fit with how warfare had evolved by the end the human covenant war. Considering both sides had clearly learned that big, slow moving armor was a great way to get soldiers killed, a waste of resources, and almost never used it (there are exceptions) the mantis and the behemoth thing in that one desert mission from Halo 4 don't really fit in the "move fast or you won't live long enough to regret it" style of warfare of the halo games.

Saber was also meant for space/high orbit superiority only. They were launched from the ground via **Rockets** Wing tip thrusters were primarily meant as afterburners, which while A certain liability, cutting the afterburner and compensating with power shifts to individual primary engines to start course correction. Along with the fact that they more than likely have secondary maneuvering emergency 'thrusters' much like we see in other sci-fi for finer maneuvering and also in Halo itself for direct evasive maneuvers on the lateral and horizontal axis. So In either case, for modern military integration it shouldn't be on the list as we have Zero applicability for the craft. The fact that the Wasp is a light reconnaissance vehicle gave me a cool idea to make it unique in a sandbox where the Hornet and the Falcon are also present. The Wasp could have the special ability to highlight all enemies in a certain area around it (maybe all enemies appearing onscreen, idk) or some other feature that provided info to the rest of the team, making it more than just another aircraft that can hover and shoot. The issue with the falcon in the real world is the location of the propellers make it a hazard for the crew resulting in constantly down forces on those on the sides and making it incredibly hazardous to bail or parachute from. We see these exact issues with the osprey. Yes it can carry a single vehicle and people can jump from it, but they have to jump from it in motion and from the rear like a plane, not like a copter as the downforces can throw people into a spin or screw with their parachute if it opens early.

The farming industry, having to move giant blocks of hay by using a crane, then putting it on a truck. Moving shipping containers. Yeah, that’s the main thing that’s always bugged me about the Scorpion. 90mm guns were obsolete in the 1960s as a tank armament, let alone 2552. Finally finished your video (4 days later) and I got to the Saber part. The Saber is a space fighter, not an aircraft. It doesn't have a tail fin stabilizer because it's not meant for in-atmosphere combat. Its top (fins) are likely artificial gravity field emitters for stability, and the bi-wing design is also likely involved in this kind of concept. Notice there are no flaps for steering. This is likely because it's using the multiple engines, sure, but also because it uses gravity fields for maneuvers. This is why the Banshee also has the bi-wing like design. The rods are part of a full ship artificial gravity control system. This is also why they weren't afraid to lose their thrusters at the tips of the wings. The speed will surely take a hit as the gravity fields will have a tough time compensating for the off-kilter thrust, sure. But it won't send the thing spinning. Anyway, the wings are also important for radial thermal radiation. Vehicles in the vacuum of space get hot fast, and you need to focus the heat into fins and wings to let it radiate out as light because there are little to no gasses surrounding the vehicle to absorb any heat. The double wing lets liquid cooling systems flow through the outer engines and then back to a central control system in a way that's slightly more efficient as it allows for heat radiation on multiple wing panels and directions. Anyway, the main issue with these is that you're putting them into modern Earth environments and not accounting for the very realistically considered future environments design mentality. That being said, these wings aren't large enough to serve as proper thermal controls, and they definitely designed it to maintain a "cool jet" factor visually even as they gave a nod to the hard sci-fi concepts that Joseph Staten and the old guard Bungie crew were known to enjoy.
@Will_Forge
@Will_Forge Год назад
Oh dang, I paused it before you were actually finished talking about the Saber. 😅 So the FSS is "Fighter Space Ship". It's a new designation because it's not like anything we've ever had before. It's a space ship and a fighter. Modern fighters would not be able to go into space with trivial small adjustments. They simply can't function in space across the board. New space ships will need to be built on a smaller scale that resemble a fighter, but those won't be fighters that have changes. They will be space ships built smaller and armed for fast fighter like combat. They'll be something entirely new, not an evolution, so they need an entirely new designation, but a partially new sub-category designation of something that already exists.
@Aussiest
@Aussiest Год назад
Okay cool but 20:14 The Sabre is a Space Superiority fighter - you do not experience drag in the vacuum of space and whilst yes it does take off from terrestrial zones, by the time drag would matter you're already high enough in the atmosphere for it to have no effect.

I would like to mention, the turret for the first Scorpian is also crewless, so having it so high up is actually a benefit as it will only allow the enemy to shoot at your crewless turret, and at worse, disable your gun. meanwhile, a turret that requires you to reveal your hull to aim at the enemy, or a crewed turret, is at more of a risk when exposing itself as the crew are now exposing themselves to enemy fire. Of course its not always the best thing to have a high up crewless turret. The closest tank the US has to the scorpion is the AGS, which has the same turret as the Striker with an autoloader, crewless turret, and its quite low profile. If you go hull down with it, aka you only show your turret, your crew is safe.
@ivanivanovitchivanovsky7123
Big problem the Scorpion has really is that the turret lacks enough armour around the entire like, neck of it and the gun itself. You wouldn’t even need a modern AT weapon to immobilise that gun. $10 says you could prolly use a 20-25mm and damage it enough around the neck.

I think what so realistic about the warthog is that it combines technology from a developed country with concepts from something that armies in third world counties do. With many armored cars coming from professional armies like the United States, the spot where a machine gun and the gunner are at is protected with armor to reduce exposure to fire. With the warthog, its turret placement and design are inspired by what fighters in the Middle East or Central Africa do, that being strapping on heavy machine guns to their Toyotas, that kind of think you can see in like Lord of War or something.

I think the scorpion isnt realistic for us on earth but i imagine for planets like mars etc the scorpion could actually prove to be quite useful. The pelican again likely has its advantages in foreign environments. Large transport and cargo capacity. The variable thrusters are very useful for space flight which the pelican certainly does quite a lot of. For the elephant, I would say the Halo Wars elephant would be superior to the halo 3 one. The elephant to my knowledge serves essentially as a mobile command centre. Its not a frontline unit but if a mobile FOB is needed it could probably fill that role, carrying supplies, a couple of mongeese or a warthog. Looking at the warthog being for special forces stuff, look at the British Jackal wheeled vehicle and those similar to it. Lightweight, can carry a lot of gear and can be pretty fast. The sabre and broadsword cant necessarily be considered for realism concerns because they are both space combat vehicles. We dont necessarily know how soace combat will be conducted etc. I know we have neutonian physics and "realistic" stuff like the BSG Viper or the Starfury from B5. Then again the viper has 30mm coilguns and the starfury has pulse cannons and a nuclear reactor for a power plant

This is a long but genuine defense of the pelican, including real-world examples. However, i am not an expert, but I believe i dont need to be if 343 doesn't have any on their teams. I believe the way in which pelican is used provides far more utility than is considered. You yourself mention "hollow belly" helicopters, which we do see the pelicans being used for, carrying heavy equipment from scorpions to slipspace engines (elephant sized highly volotile and radioactive blackhole generators) but more than that there is a real world very similar analog in the us military today, and thats the king stalion. Said king stalion has a massive size, slower speed, propeller based, and is also a cargo carrier with similar use cases. I belive the shortcomings cited are also outweighed realistically by its ability to land with minamal air disturbance, to carry cargo close to its body (heavily increasing its operating range and scenarios)unlike helos, and surface to space capabilities that honestly put into question the need for odst pods with what we see in halo 3, and its ability to quickly deploy equipment and troops like we see in halo 2. Yes it has half the troop capacity of a king stalion but doesnt need harnesses rated for re-entry. As an example of the pelicans superiority despite similar size the king stallion cant carry an abrams, its crew, a support team, deploy them in an urban environment under fire by a technologically superior force in under 5 minutes, and provide air support with nose and door mounted miniguns as well as rocket salvos. The bungee's pelican do all that with a better crash to survival rate than any helicopter in any video game series. Look at foehammer she lasted the whole game, even doing tight manuvers underground and only died at the very end, and every other time, we saw a pelican crash, at least some of the troops servive. heck, johnson survives at least 3 uninjured and hapily hops in another 30 minutes later each time.

As much as I love the Scorpion, my own experience garnered in my time in the army with maintainers and with tankers, the Scoepion lands solidly in F-tier. Having a driver also be the gunner is terrible, while your FTP who mans thr LMG out front is completely exposed. The quadtracks is a logistics nightmare. The more you look at the Scorpion the worse it gets. 😅

I can't remember what media it was but I thought the reason the vehicles used in game were old and poorly designed was due to scarcity. The UNSC had been fighting a 30 year war and they were just using what was left/cheap to manufacture. All the cool and futuristic vehicles/weapons have been destroyed or are rare to see. I think this works for CE-Reach but a lot of the things in 4-Infinite do seem futuristic for aesthetic reasons only

@dustinbragg1921

Elephants and Mammoths also served (Well Mammoths primarily served) as mobile bases. Elephants kinda suffered from being able to decently do a bit of everything and not being even remotely optimized for anything. Combat? They could fit a lot of guns on one and it is very heavily armored, but it's big, slow, and the guns aren't good for anything tougher than a lightly armored vehicle. Vehicle recovery? If the Elephant could hook onto it then it could tow it, and it could even carry repair technicians out with it if all they needed to do was drag a vehicle out of a ditch and do some minor repairs, but once again he a _big_ boy. Mobile base? One wasn't going to be taken out by a few rockets, could carry a decent amount of men, could be equipped with most instruments field command would need to communicate and coordinate with the higherups for any given mission, and could carry plenty of weapons and supplies for the troops, but it is big and slow though. The common trend is that in any given role it was about as unsubtle as you can get without being a Mammoth and wasn't outrunning anything not on feet. Mammoths do two things, mobile base and killing big things that can't run away or hide. They largely do not care about terrain so long as it can fit on flat enough ground to function without sinking. Rocky terrain? Drive over it. Dense vegetation? Drive over it. Rivers and swamps? Drive over it. Heavy enemy fire and fortification? Drive through it. It takes steep mountains, deep waters, huge sand dunes, or wide canyons to stop a Mammoth, and it tends to make up for the fact that it can't always get to the blow it the hell up objective by being able to reach out over the horizon and blow it the hell up anyway. Changing a tire is definitely a certified bitch, but good luck making one need to. Mammoths are less ground combat vehicles and more small ground based carrier ships with one big fuck you cannon and a few embarked vehicles and a lot of marines. They're a seige platform.

Something I think they could have done better with the Mantis would be if they had designed it to be primarily a utility vehicle, like a forklift on legs that could pick up and manipulate heavy equipment more fluidly than a regular forklift, and if it just so happens to also have a heavy machine gun just in case the station is boarded and all hands are needed to repel boarders.

The OG pelicans from halo 1 to reach are my all time favourite sci-fi ships, any space game i play i try to use ships with similar designs like in SC i almost exclusively use the vanguard Warden, simply because it looks like the pelican. The first time we get to fly one in a halo game, not including easter eggs and bugs was in halo 4 which had the worst pelican design you could imagine. Im glad they went back to the original design in halo wars 2 and infinite, the ones in halo 4 and 5 which took obvious inspiration from the real life hind, which explains why the pelican's role changed from dedicated troop transport with minor close air support capabilities into an gunship capable of transporting troops.

The Hawk from the OG Halo Wars was definitely one of the best designed UNSC attack aircraft we’ve seen imo along with the SABRE from Reach. I think your one critique of the SABRE with the wingtip mounted thrusters may be nullified due to the fact that it was one the few smaller shielded UNSC aircraft and they could perhaps also be jettisonable.

The only mechs I would accept are mechs under 12 feet and primary used for logistics or Infantry support in areas unsuited for proper combat vehicle like dense urban environments or aboard ships or stations. Once a mech reaches "tank with legs" status, it's lost all it's realism points. If they replaced the cannon of the Atlas from mass effect with something like a machine-gun, it would probably be the perfect Infantry support mech. That's how impractical mechs are if that's the best you can do. It's slow and cumbersome, but small enough and light enough to fight inside buildings or on stations. It can be easily airdropped onto the battlefield. It's practically impervious to small arms fire. And though the giant transparent canopy over the cockpit is a major weak point, it's made of synthetic sapphire and would be necessary as an analogue backup. If the sensors were jammed, the pilot would still have a full field of view around him.

Minor disagreement about the Falcon, it's a great aircraft but it doesn't make very good use of it's footprint. The narrow front doesn't offer really offer any advantages beside a smaller profile from the front. If the front were wider it could have a co-pilot to do other tasks or take over in an emergency. If it were able to be equipped with side doors it could also be a little more versatile

The Mammoth is so big because it's designated as a Siege vehicle and had to be that big to carry a mobile MAC gun. And just like the Elephant, it works as a mobile forward operating base where troops can resupply and fix vehicles, with officers dishing out commands from the 2nd floor. Also, I'm not sure what people mean by the mantis doesn't fit in Halo? Whether it's the Mantis from the 343 games, the Cyclops from the Halo Wars games or the Prototype suit in the Halo Legends episode "Prototype", mechs do indeed exist in this universe. So being mad at the Mantis existing seems odd. The M808 Scorpion also was designed with that tall turret in mind. The turret is crewless, so any fire it draws is to the benefit of the crew inside, while allowing it to be placed behind walls and other cover and fire over, and allowing for a further shell distance. Also, the 4 treads are supposed to allow the tank to keep movie, even if one of the treads is damaged, while an irl tank would become immobile

Dear Cabezon, I just wish to say that enjoyed the video, and I hope that 343 will see this one day and see it as constructive criticism. However, I wish to clarify why the Pelican is classified as the D-77 Pelican Troop Transport. The D stands for Drop ship, and that’s exactly what the Pelican is designed to do, load a few squads into the troop bay, take those troops from the main ship down to the planet’s surface, drop the units off planet side, return to the main ship, and repeat. Also, a little bit of fun Trivia about the YSS-1000 Sabre, there was actually a competitor to this craft for the next Exoatmospheric Strike Fighter called the S-930 Pegasus, made by SinoViet Heavy Machinery, there were nine combat ready prototypes ready for the Battle of Tribute in 2552. Hope you have a splendid day.

Alright, I'mma make my cases for the Pelican and Scorpion being more realistic when you look at how best to use them, but first, broadsword, forward swept wings on it are most likely because forward swept wings allow for better maneuverability (Btw, I'll be talking about possible in lore reasons, we all know the real reasons is because they look cool), The Pelican honestly is more realistic than I think you give it credit for, most military aircraft, transport or combat ones, tend to be screwed over if they get hit, Helicopters can glide if they're hit, but only if the rotor is mostly intact, and most aircraft that we have when hit by a missile, usually loose their wings first, causing them to spin out and hit the ground, Fighter Jets are the best example of showing this, if they're hit and loose their engine, they usually loose like half the aircraft's functions in general, and most modern aircraft have what's called 'fly-by-wire', which is where a computer takes the inputs on the stick and pedals and translates that to the control surfaces, this is because most aircraft now have 'unstable' designs, which allow for better performance in terms of turning and flight, but would required hundreds of corrections every minute. The Pelican is closer to a Chinook than a C-130, it can bring in a decent number of troops, and whole Warthogs and Scorpions at the same time, which takes up over half the space that would be a troop compartment, the reason the number of troops is so low is also probably because that's the most seats that they can fit in there to keep the soldiers safe during Reentry, and probably could carry many more, there's also a compartment module that allows for the troop bay to be extended almost to the end of the Pelican, giving it the space to carry close to the amount of soldiers a C-130 could, assuming that many of them wouldn't mind sitting/standing on the ground. The Scorpion is also probably more realistic than you'd think because, outside of urban combat, it's actually well designed, the soldiers themselves are in the haul of the vehicle, something we're starting to see today in the form of the Panther, T-14, and M1E3 Abrams, and with the elevated turret, it allows the crew to shoot over obstacles, or with the haul inside a dug out Battle Position, the turret can be heavily armored without needing to worry about the internal space needed for crew, easily allowing the scorpion to have massive amounts of armor on the turret, the four individual track pontoon things allows the tank to much more smoothly and easily travel over rough terrain, and generally just makes it good for combat in non-urban areas. I feel like the Warthog would be better for Urban environments, especially because it has access to at least 3 different kinds of turrets, the chain gun, the Gauss cannon, and the missile/rocket turret, the Gauss cannon specifically replaces the need for a tank much in Urban combat because, well, that's basically a tank gun, with no recoil mounted on basically a futuristic jeep, so the firepower of the tank is already there, and since Anti-Tank weapons could in theory tank both vehicles out just as easy, better to use the fast and nimble warthog than a tank which will have to move much slower especially in an urban environment

My theory on the goofy desig nof the scorpion tank is, due to the limited space on the ships, as well as difficulty in getting spare parts and logistics requirements, they deicded to combine a tank and self propelled atillery piece into one vehicle, resulting in a design that can provide both armoured direct fire support, as well as being able to elevate its gun to indirect fire, while all using the same parts and ammo, instead of needing the materials for two separate systems

Pelicans can already carry scorpions in their default configuration. They could most definitely fly in, drop a fresh scorpion off, pick up the knocked out one, and then bring it back to base. Also the mantis isn’t supposed to be a combat vehicle, it’s supposed to be a utility vehicle. Sure it has guns and missiles on it in the game, but even in the game it’s got an operator saying that they know how to move cargo but not shoot covenant. It’s literally the cyclops utility walker from halo wars except it’s “modern.”
