I know that the xx40 and xx50 series have a more modern look, but have you ever worked with an xx10 series desktop? I have a couple of MT parts only cases that I thought about making Ryzen builds (possibly a 5700g until GPU prices get better) with NVME SSD. Back to the desktop idea, do you happen to know if the front I/O has a standard connector for that series? The reason that I got the MT was due to uncertainty of the front I/O, and PSU. You’ve shown how to solve the PSU issue, thanks.

I've never personally worked with that series of desktop, no. I don't think it has a standard connector for the front panel of that series. I am aware of adapters that you can buy to remedy the issue though. Similar to the PSU adapters I use

Awesome madman build! I have a plan on making this exact same thing, just with a different layout, and 7080 instead (i7 10700). Idea is to get a 5700XT (it'll go where the PSU is, with a riser card), a modular 750W SFX PSU (I'll place it where the DVD drive is, super tight fit but I think it'll work, and a power plug extender). Only thing I'm questioning is CPU power limit (it's getting a beefier cooler so no worries with thermal limits). I know that the 10700 can get very toasty with it pulling over 200W at full load (yep, whole Dell PSU, instant on a Z490 board, ) and at 4.7GHz all core. Now, the PSU and the CPU cooler are more than competent to power the beast, but that Dell Q470 board is worrying me. It seems like Dell might limiting those CPUs as Intel intended, to 65W max, which means this i7's all core turbo is not being used. Also, how did you plug the PSU to the motherboard? This OptiPlex I'm looking at only has a dual 4 pin and a single 6 pin which means the CPU probably isn't getting enough juice.

@@TheGameBench Hmmm, that's not a bad idea! Maybe I could try a delidded i9 9900 with a copper IHS and an L9x65 instead of the L9i! I measured, there is enough room in there for the L9x65 cooler!
@TheGameBench
@TheGameBench 2 года назад
@@WiltshireTutorials I was thinking about the L9x65 as well, but I saw a roundup from Hardware Canucks that compared a bunch of low pro coolers, including the L9x65, and it got beaten by the ID Cooling IS-50X. Which is also cheaper, and shorter. It's an L style cooler that overhangs the I/O but I don't think the rear fans would be an issue. I just bought one and I'm going to give it a go along with the delid. There's also the Dell XE2 cooler, which has a copper core that might work better than that L9i.

Hello, I'm looking to upgrade my optiplex 7060 mini tower (3040) with a gtx 1650 and if needed a PSU too. Will the GPU fit? And also which PSU should I get if I don't want to make any modifications.
@WiltshireTutorials
@WiltshireTutorials Год назад
Sorry about not getting to your comment. I somehow missed it! As for your questions, the 1650 should fit just fine. You should be able to run the 1650 without swapping out the stock PSU, due to the 1650 not having any PCI-E power slots on it. it will draw its power from the motherboard PCI-E slot instead. If you want to upgrade the PSU, you're looking at modifications. There's no way around that, unfortunately.

Wondered what your experience is with non-dell fans in Optiplex machines? I have an optiplex 5040, and I'm using an arctic CPU fan and 3 arctic case fans (only 1 case fan header - so I've used a 1-3 splitter to plug all 3 case fans into the one case-fan header). No matter what I do, all fans blaze at 100% - I've tried speedfan, HWInfo64, fancontrol, Argus, bios controls (which are basically max speed or system auto - either way they run at max speed) - all either have NO way to set a fan speed, or for the ones that do, setting the fan speed does nothing - they continue to run at max speed. I wouldn't mind, but they're just too loud and I don't need the insane cooling - the CPU especially runs cool even under load. I assume the motherboard might only be able to correctly control a dell certified CPU/Case fans - but I'm amazed that I can't find ANY way to control them. Maybe a way to undervolt them even? For reference I'm running an i5 6500T which doesn't go above 28degrees idle and 50degrees even on an intense load - so I certainly don't need the fans blazing! Have you had these issue?
@WiltshireTutorials
@WiltshireTutorials Год назад
I've used Noctua and Arctic fans on my Optiplex builds. Both work great and I'm able to control the fan speed to a degree. Dell has essentially nerfed controlling the fan speed. They give you 3 "fan states". The first is 0 RPM, the second is 1000 RPM and the third is 3308 RPM. There are no in between, that I've found. The Optiplex 5040 motherboard has 2 fans headers on it. One for the SYS_FAN and one for the CPU_FAN. I use a splitter for both headers. 2 fans on the CPU_FAN header and 3 on the SYS_FAN header. Also make sure that you're buying 4-pin PWM fans and splitters, not 3-pin fans/splitters. Some fan splitters will split off into only 3-pin fan connectors and you won't be able to control anything. The only program that I found I could use to control the fan speed automatically upon booting Windows was HWInfo64. The program is pretty easy to program a custom fan curve too.
@beelzzebub
@beelzzebub Год назад
@@WiltshireTutorials Thanks - my cpu fan is a 4 pin. But seems to go full speed no matter what. In terms of HWinfo64, I am able to set the 3 different speeds, but no matter what it says “inactive” instead of “active” - it also reports the fan speed to be anywhere from 500 - 6000 rpm, but listening with a decibel meter i’m 99% sure it’s running at a constant speed. I’ll take a look at your video around fixing overheating and see if I can configure HWinfo64 to honour any of the 3 speed levels 👍

@WiltshireTutorials
@WiltshireTutorials 10 месяцев назад
I'm glad you like MiniFlex! I didn't think it was possible myself! Lots of trial and error went into it. the TX500 that I used required the usage of an adapter, like you mentioned. My recommendation for GPUs, with the proprietary PSU, is to stay away from the RX 6400 due to the fact that it utilizes PCI-E 4.0 w/ x4 lanes. If you use the card on a PCI-E 3.0 board (The 3050 is PCI-E 3.0 only), it will affect the performance of that card quite a bit. I'd recommend a GTX 1650 LP (Low-Profile), if you can find one for a decent price. No risers would be required with a low-profile card. The ultimate low-profile card that would work the best is the RTX A2000. But, are typically not cheap and can be expensivel.
@Ramble1234
@Ramble1234 10 месяцев назад
@@WiltshireTutorials Gotchu. Thanks for the tip! I've searched up some LP 1650's and they're a bit pricey. You think single fan 1050 would fit well? If not, a riser would suffice? They're quite small, but I'm worried they won't fit the slot since the fan might be too big of a fit, hence the inclusion of a pcie riser. It's 75w, the same as a 1650, so I assume it would be okay?
@WiltshireTutorials
@WiltshireTutorials 10 месяцев назад
@@Ramble1234 I'd recommend getting the 1050Ti over the 1050. It'll give a little bit more performance and doesn't required PCI-E power. You can find them pretty cheaply too. How'd you get those noctua fans hooked up to your system? I'm trying to reduce the temps for my system so I can go from a 1650 to a 3050 6GB LP but can't wrap my head around how to get the 80 and 40mm fans connected to the computer before I buy them, as I don't want to get something I can't use.

I used a fan splitter that allows me to connect multiple fans to the fan header on the motherboard.

@@WiltshireTutorials Thanks so much for replying so fast. I just sent an order through for the splitters and fans themselves, but I've been wracking my brain to figure out how that would work. Hope I don't have to return anything. I'm working with a 5060SFF and looking at the Noctua 80mm for the front but it says to not connect it to the fan connector as its a 5v and it would get burnt out by that 12v connection (?). So what I've got so far is a SATA Y splitter and a 15 pin Sata to 4 PC fan connector (I'm hoping to get three fans in the back for exhaust, I saw someone with a 9020 do that). And I forgot to say, but amazing video. It makes me want to get into customizing the cases, it looks like a lot of fun.

@@MrOnepiece14 I recommend getting one that is a 5 way splitter with a connector dedicated to the CPU fan. The one I used was this one: www.amazon.ca/ThreeBulls-Cooling-Splitter-Adapter-Computer/dp/B07M5P7VHG/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3E5UI3R5ZDB5K&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.0Wa20GQf1zt73HFnOAb4scGU3SIFtNyt45cdH3zWyb7TJnZx7yRuTD-opEhyC_u0NVwFAq9dwPre5cgUpWXBdbzOffGhB4ujqkK_6kHnjT6_tJLrpSMdYz97u3lrhOVvitQvBT77B4Yx1z-nrQiwnwak0_kh0_Vx2b8fb4-br_79bmBRjXhae3r_Aq82ta7u22_THxRtGvMMMMp0skl3Pe5VE9vX2HxXsii_-7zkjTQOWrKIBD1JJR2usZx7hHKNnBAMxsFREzEv6ey_IFjE2HxU9DH5gizdCygRV-bdMVI.gbBsnZxmni4fslSCwsN990rH5r8521pGnB29MFl1KW8&dib_tag=se&keywords=fan+splitter&qid=1719247429&s=electronics&sprefix=fan+splitte%2Celectronics%2C103&sr=1-4 There is only one fan header on the SFF boards. The MT have two. Noctua had many variants of their fans. They offer 5V or 12V for different electronics other than PCs. You'll want the 12V version for a PC. Do not use a 5V variant fan as it will burn out the fan and possibly the motherboard. Glad you like the video and that I'm able to inspire you to pick up some case modding! Let me know if you have any more questions. I'm always around.

@@WiltshireTutorials Oh man, thank you. With that 5 way splitter I should still be able to have my shroud+heatsink powered still, right? @@MrOnepiece14 No problem. I'm here to help! Are you referring to your CPU cooler? Not sure what you mean by "shroud+heatsink". Did you notice a difference in temperature-readings when comparing the intact case, to you drilling the initial holes in the side-panel? I've bought an HP Prodesk 600 G5, and I'm thinking of possibly doing something similar once I get a graphics card in there (RX 6400, so nothing wild, but they seem to run pretty hot). The HP computer has a similarly poor ventilation design that Optiplex SFF has, so it's tempting to either drill holes or install a wire mesh window in the side-panel, but it's not a guarantee that it will actually help in practice, and might be unnecessary work (fluid-dynamics can be weird that way).
@WiltshireTutorials
@WiltshireTutorials 11 месяцев назад
In my case, it absolutely helped bring down the temperature of the PC. The mesh grill may not be the best option due to its porousity. I went with drilled holes because it technically has better airflow that way
@OrinLinwe
@OrinLinwe 11 месяцев назад
@@WiltshireTutorials Do you remember a ball-pack figure difference in C? (5, 10?). The mesh I was thinking about would be hardware mesh (wire-mesh grill) similar to what this youtuber did: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PQGliz4fliM.html So basically a kind of wide-hole, strong connection mesh that retains the structural integrity of the removable casing side (and less like the speaker-mesh that a lot of PC cases have).

For me, it dropped temps by 19°C. That kind of mesh grill would be absolutely fine. It's very porous. I thought you meant a fine mesh.

Maybe I could give you an idea on how to approach it; ditch the PCI-E bracket. I took mine off and used the holes in the PCB left over from the bracket to make my own. I used 90 degree angle shelf brackets from Rona (Canadian equivalent to Home Depot) to mount the card vertically. My thought process was "What if I make the card hang like a clothes line of sorts?". Not to mention, doing it this way will allow the card to intake fresh air, if you drill holes in the side panel. Of course, 3D printing a sled or mounting bracket would've been more elegant of a solution. But, I didn't have one at the time of filming the video.
