Hi Jackie, I’m in Miami and plan on starting more Everglades tomatoes, and eggplants from the big box stores. I don’t have much luck with bell peppers and the Cucamelon from seeds continue to grow but no edible fruits yet. All in raised beds. My guava tree is full of black fungus and the tangerine and lime trees are not growing 😢 but not dying either. But I’m NOT giving up, lol. I’ll just keep planting!!!

Id like to grow pumpkins for the sole purpose to decorate this fall. When should I start sowing seed and planting? And do you ever do vertical gardening?
@WildFloridian
@WildFloridian 6 месяцев назад
You can start now. Seminole Pumpkins and most pumpkins can last 6 months to a year in your house. Our house is decorated year round inside with seminole pumpkins. In the fall, off vine they will survive a bit, once you cut into them... you'll have barely any time.

Had a hearty tomato patch going and got hit by spider mites! Had to rip out about half of my EG and spraying soap to knock it out and save my Cherokees and sweet 100s. My Seminole pumpkins are taking off! I'll have to look into the Ping Tings, how do you cook them?

I am originally from Alaska but moved to Tampa area. I have a Jalapeño that I got from my local garden center, how well would it do in the summer here?
@WildFloridian
@WildFloridian 6 месяцев назад
They can do great. The trick is to put it in an area that will get shade in the afternoon during the summer. Or you can put it in a container and move it. Peppers are native to the gulf and Caribbean area and would naturally grow on forest edges. So they like full sun in the winter and mostly in the spring and then need protection in the summer and then they can bounce back in the fall.

Most peppers should do fine. I recommend using partial shade or shadecloth during the summer, as they can be brutal. Good on you getting below the 30th parallel.

Could it have been a cat? That got into your beds? We have a cat problem in my neighborhood and they destroy everything so I have to practically cage in my garden with goat fencing. It sucks. :)

Jacqueline, when you say you will “replace” a plant like your cubanelle peppers do you mean that you will cut down the old existing plants or dig them up,roots and all and then will you plant more of the same ie: cubanelle in that same bed or would you rotate crops?

UV Index is something I really wish the big box stores would consider. They sell sooooooo many plastic garden tools that just don't last here in Florida. Even the ones that are UV hardened or resistant only last about 2 years. But walk into a big box store and try to find a metal watering can... one that isn't meant to be a cheap decorative item. They are few and far between. I think I got my current metal one from Rural King about 6 years ago and it is still going strong.

Hi Jacqueline! You've been a big help to me as I've been gardening with elementary students in our two-year-old school garden in Longwood, Fl. I'm really glad I found your channel. I've learned A LOT from you, especially about natives! Question for you. Do you worry about growing sunflowers with certain plants? I've heard they can hurt some crops. How big a deal is this in raised beds? 🌻
@WildFloridian
@WildFloridian 6 месяцев назад
Awww!!! Yay! That makes me so happy to hear! I've heard that about sunflowers, but have seen a bunch of examples of beds that have them in it. Sooooo I would just keep them on one side to limit potential losses.

Tomatoes produce several hormones when pollinated and fertilized, including auxin and gibberellins (GAs), which stimulate fruit set. Auxin is a plant growth-regulating hormone that plays a key role in cell expansion, division and differentiation, fruit setting, and development. I use it on my flowering plants
