What kind of trees do they have in Germany that have such perfectly formed branches? The trees in America were designed on LSD day. It's a miracle if you can find more than a 6 inch segment that's straight, not to mention the uniform width and perfect wood.

Basswood, Tulip Poplar, and Sycamore (in that order) all work pretty well, and are pretty common in the Northeast at least. Basswood especially for the fireboard, with one of the other two as the drill, is my favorite. Basswood doesn't last long, you only get very few uses per hole (maybe 1-3 coals per hole), but it's so easy.

Ist dein Bowdrill reichlich mager, brauchst Du halt ein Kugellager. Dann kannst du mit deinem Stecken jederzeit ein Feuer wecken. Felix zeigt: auch Schweizer Messer geht mit seinen Tricks noch besser.

Felix du oida kurbler.....Im really interested in how long the scale from the SAK can handle the temperature. I mean the Bearing will get warm in some way. Step by Step a little at a time, until the bearing will fall out or the scale Breaks loose. Maybe not with the first few bow drills, but at some point it will weaken the hole you drilled.....did happen to me many times. Even glued in pieces dont stay there forever. Do you have long term experience with that modification my friend. Would be very interesting. Thx buddy Cheers 🍻 Mike

Für deutschsprachige Bowdrill interessierte: der Kanal Buntbär, hatte vor einigen Jahren die Idee der Schlaufenschnurführung, welche viel einfacher ist, als die herkömmlich gezeigte, der Kanal David West, zeigt ausschließlich Methoden von Handdrill und Bowdrill fast wissenschaftlich tiefgehend - ja, uralte Methoden wieder zu lernen und zu verstehen, sollte jedem Bushcrafter selbstverständlich sein, David West bebützt seit Jahren einen Kugellager Handblock, aber die Kombination mit dem selbstverständlich für jeden Outdoormenschen vorhandenen Schweizer Messer, das gelingt nur Felix dem Größten

I own few 91 mm SAK. To one of them I inserted, in the scale, a small round magnet about the same size with your little bearing. Now I can use her as a refrigerator magnet or attach her to any steel surface in my truck. I can use her to pick up things.

Utilizo una Pinza Multifuncion Victorinox Swiss Tool Cs Plus 39 Usos para hacer algo similar, pero sin modificar la herramienta. Abro la pinza y en el espacio con forma de "V" que queda entre las manijas coloco un bolillero (ball-bearing) de 2cm de diámetro por 7 mm. de espesor. Al cerrar la pinza, el bolillero queda disponible en la mano que sujeta las manijas, sostenido por estas. Funciona perfecto.

Clever trick and well executed bow drill action - thanks for sharing yet another useful trick/mod! Was wondering if the rounded part of the can opener on the SAK could act as an anchor too - negating the need for the modification. Have you tried that or given it a thought?

@@FelixImmler I look forward to it! The bow tension is the hardest part for me, I often retie the bow 3-4 times looking for the right tension, but adjusting with the thumb will solve all that.

This is an excellent mod. What diameter hole did you drill in the scale, to get the 12mm bearing to fit so snugly? Hats off to you Felix! Will Victorinox ever make an Explorer or Huntsman with the spindle bearing?

Ernsthaft, warum hat Victorinox noch keine von deinen Messer Mods übernommen um mal ein neues Modell rauszubringen. :S So‘n SwissChamp Survival Edition wäre schon nice. Stattdessen, immer die selben Modelle, immer wieder und wieder und wieder ... Während die Victorinox Community eine geniale Mod nach der anderen rausbringt und wir uns unsere neuen Modelle schon fast selber bauen müssen.

Felix Immler 🤔 Gibt es nicht solche Seiten für Petitionen? Vielleicht sollten wir eine Felix - Survival Messer Petition machen, nachdem wir die besten Ideen für ein Survival Victorinox gesammelt haben. 😂 Dann könnte Victorinox endlich mal was anderes als Plastik oder Alu nehmen für die Griffschalen. Ich hatte mir mal Gedanken macht wie man ein SwissChamp mit minimalen Aufwand zum Survival Messer machen könnte. Teilweise mit deinen Tipps 😉 Aber normal anschreiben kann sicher nicht schaden 👍

It's a 6 mm I.D x 12 mm O.D x 4 mm thick bearing. Just search eBay for "MR126 Bearing."
