Sorry if someone already said this, but the reason they call it "be'f" is because various lobbyists have argued for it to be illegal for plant based products to use the names of meat products on their packaging. The original intent was to make the food sound gross (instead of hot dogs they wanted them to be called plant tubes, for example). They wanted to change the marketing to stop the growth in people going vegan/vegetarian.
It's hilarious to me, like I'm lactose intolerant dairy companies, I can't drink/eat your products no matter what they're called 😂 And lactose free milk just tastes too sweet to me now so I'm not drinking that either.
I also found that the impossible ground beef/ brick that you can mold into your own patties is SOO delicious and juicy and even compared the impossible patties is miles better. I served it to my family & they asked for seconds, not even knowing it was vegan!!
Impossible brick is my fave too, its good for making meatballs quickly! I like being able to add liquid smoke and extra seasonings in it which you can’t really do with a patty
Absolutely agree with this, we made sliders for the Super Bowl out of the impossible ground meat and literally NOBODY knew it was meatless until our close friend went, “aren’t you both vegetarians? Did you make cook meat for us?” and then we told them!

@@samthunders3611 I think people just have an issue that he is hoarding money and extracting value at this point, while a lot of the workers in his company are working in terrible conditions and can not even support a normal life on a salary. But yeah, good for him for being successful...
@@samthunders3611 He didn't "have a great idea, and it worked." He had an inheritance and bought an already successful company, already on its way to massive success, and then sucked the value from it by underpaying workers, while overcharging customers. There is nothing any single person could possibly do or invent that would merit them gaining more money than they know what to do with, while those who work for them struggle, suffer, and die. That has been the case with every Billionaire, and most millionaires, doing unethical things, just inside the law, and people like you call that "clever." At least Gates has spent millions helping people in Africa with vaccinations, AIDS meds, and free family planning, allowing for a healthier population, with a plummeting infant mortality rate. I still hate him for how he made his money, and he still hold onto far too much at the expense of his employees. See? One can understand someone's "success," without fawning over them like a simpleton.
As a South African vegan, I'm so excited to see Fry's on the list. They were the only company selling vegan substitutes for decades. This is the perfect example of brand loyalty for South African vegans/vegetarians and even the Hindu community during fasting seasons.
Impossible burgers are the best. I emailed them to sing their praises for giving us a real burger. They emailed me back, thanking me. Then asked for my address and shirt size. A week later, I received a sweet thank you card and an Impossible teeshirt.
I did this with oreos one day when I was super stoned called the number on the back and raved how good they were. They eneded up sending oreos in a box.
Impossible burger is my favorite as well and my go to when I want a burger. I like beyond meat's spicy Italian sausage and spicy breakfast sausages...though their spicy isn't really spicy as I always have to add cayenne pepper to them. Great video merle!
Ive noticed as veggie stuff gets more popular my local grocery outlet has added veggie things like permanently to their stock. Theres always some gardein, beyond, impossible or some weird off brand ive never heard of
Who should punish themselves that way? Vegan cheese is worse than the cheapest plastic wrapped slices in existence. Eaten a whole lot of varieties due to family members with limited diets. Vegan cheese is a terrible creation and a half. F' that noise.
I agree; at this point, there's very few vegan cheeses that are worth the money. But for people who choose not to or can't eat real cheese, it can be extremely helpful to know what your best option is
@Joss Bailey I've sampled quite a bit of the "you can't tell the difference" varieties. I could always tell the difference. But I can eat dairy without issue.
@Joss Bailey And if it's all you can have, it makes sense. Honestly I prefer vegan/vegetarian food that doesn't pretend to be something it's not. Just be your own thing instead of sad "vegan bacon".
HELLOOO Beautiful people, I hope you enjoy this one. Please comment whatever your Alexa said to you. Also, DID YOU GUESS THE MOVIE? These ranking videos are a blast, I'll be doing a call out on my IG soon for some brands - instagram.com/merleeshay/ In the meantime, what would you like to see next?
I love these ranking videos. My bf and I (as non-vegans) try as many of these imitation animal products as possible because 1. fun, 2. educational, we're really thinking about the ways it works and doesn't work that improve our cooking, 3. when we find a good one it feels great to have more vegan options for some dishes that we feel good about and enjoy. And because we're still not vegan (he eats more meat than I do) we can serve it to friends (allergy exclusive) and not tell them and surprise them later with how good it is. It's also great to be inclusive in group meals because you don't need to make a separate dish, less work. We had a banh mi bbq not too long ago with impossible patties. Not a single vegetarian among them and only one pescatarian and there were raves all around. I find a lot of people tend to be close minded about animal alternatives because they've had bad experiences, assumptions, or are just not open to try new things. Being able to serve them a tasty dish with it is so important to just get them open to the idea that hey, they don't need to eat meat for EVERY meal and there are amazing substitutes that are just as good.
As a vegetarian I am so happy you are open to different ideas! I think it’s great when people go out their comfort zones and try different alternatives. I respect the hell outta you💕
i like your distinction between vegan burger and veggie burger because i don’t like the super realistic burgers and never knew how to describe the type of veggie patties i actually like (chickpeas, black bean, veggies)
I think the Beyond burger has a weird smell when cooking! I can’t describe it but it’s clearly not an appetizing smell which for me takes away from the taste. The other thing is I don’t like eating them as you kinda raw, I prefer them well done. My fav is the impossible, I will have to try the 365 burgers! Thanks
Exactly bruh. My mom accidentally bought a whole box of beyond burgers instead of the normal meat ones we get. We had burgers for lunch the following day. It was so gross, I think one of my siblings was chucking it back up. The smell and the taste of it was like straight dirt, just…I can’t describe it in words. If you enjoy the burger then you have a stomach of steel.
The flavor of the impossible is what sells it. As a meat eater I absolutely choose the impossible over a regular beef burger when available. Trust me you won't regret it.
@@michaelaltawil for me I still eat meat because it’s yummy, Impossible, while delicious, doesn’t cover everything. But only in moderation once a month on cheat days or so
@@michaelaltawil taste. What’s more important life of a human or life of an animal? Meat is full of antibiotics and hormones which is why I try to avoid it. Honestly I couldn’t care less about the animals. The only 3 animals I care about (horses, elephants, kitties) I don’t eat anyway but I’m not about to judge someone else that does….
First, I wanna thank you for doing this because I needed to help. When you said people could be confused about the impossible burger … it’s how I discovered impossible burgers. I ordered one at a Red Robin, and I called the waiter over to let them know that they made a mistake and gave me real meat. Haha
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the beyond after taste yet. They always give me a copper or metal after taste and the weirdest burps for hours after. I never buy them for that reason.
i think the best thing about the gardein burgers is that they're sort of reminiscent of fast food burger patties. so yeah, with some toppings and condiments, it can feel like you're eating a fast food burger which is something nostalgic and appealing to me i'll also only be calling those 365 ones "bezos burgers" from now on
impossible burgers are TOO good. they always scare me into thinking i’m eating real meat and usually ask a meat eater around me to try it first just incase 🤣
You should do a tier list on vegan substitutes for other types of meats. Most people know about Impossible and Beyond but personally I've never heard of a popular brand for vegan hot dogs, or for chicken
Gardein makes chicken nuggets and chicken strips called “ultimate” and 🔥🤤 theyre mine and my husband’s favorite unhealthy chicken substitute. Stores around here have a hard time keeping them stocked. They’re constantly sold out. Also morning star makes corn dogs that scared me they’re so good. (Corn dogs are best in the oven)
@@APickledPeanut I like Quorn too, though as a warning their chicken is not actually vegan, I read the label and has milk powder or egg or something like that if that's important to you.
Love the vid!! I would enjoy seeing ingredient lists esp when there's a vegan burger (or otherwise) with odd or unexpected flavor,, also,, would love to see your ranking within the categories where you placed multiple burgers :-) super excited to try some of these options if I can find them!
This was so helpful! I’m slowly going vegan and the sheer enormity of the process is a bit overwhelming! And - the bonus was when you started quoting the line “i want to buy a hamburger!” Love that you are a fellow dork/weirdo!
I prefer the Gardein to the 365, but always cook in the oven, not the stovetop. Try cooking the rest of the bag on a baking sheet in the oven and see if you like them better that way.
Thanks, Merle that was informative and entertaining :) It’s great how much plant based burgers have improved the last few years. I guess Beyond and Impossible have really upped the ante.
Thank you! These were very accurate. Impossible and Beyond are just on another level compared to all others with the exception of maybe the Whole Foods Burgers. I was shocked how good the Whole Foods Burgers taste.
First off your personality is so natural. I've just become a subscriber. A lot of people are trying too hard to have a personality and they become annoying. Secondly, I had an impossible burger at Burger King and it was awful to me but beyond burgers are just excellent. Yes they have a weird smell to start but it goes away. If the closest to beef that I have tried. I'm going to go ahead and buy two impossible burgers and try them at home to see. Also Costco has big quantities in packages of both Beyond and impossible burgers.
I will say I'm glad you're doing vegan rankings. I'm by no means vegan but I am trying to, when options are available, eat more vegan/vegetarian options and reduce the amount of actual meat in my diet. It's really nice to be able to watch these videos and make informed choices on what to buy when I grocery shop because I'm always so worried about trying new things and having them just be wasted money and I feel like these help me make more informed choices. So thank you for that and I can't wait to try a couple of these next time I go shopping ♥
Love this Merle. Why is it that everyone like you and Sauce Stache have to apologize in every video for the 'meat like' or 'meat tasting' vegan/vegetarian substitute? I was a meat eater and 5 years since am happy there is a meat substitute that takes away from factory farming. The Plant Based industry has done well for vegans/vegetarians in my opinion. No more apologizing......no more holier the thou comments folks. If it's not meat, it's not MEAT!!!!!!
@@jozsefjamesofficial no, he doesn’t apologise. He always has to state that the broth is chicken flavoured, not chicken broth, because the comments section will be full of 'why are you using chicken' comments. That’s not an apology.
I LOVE the Dr. Praeger’s Perfect Burger. Idk, I like that it doesn’t taste just like meat. Also a good tip with those is to unthaw them completely and then just grill or pan fry them for 2-3 minutes on each side.
Hi Merle. I just found your channel, so I'm late to the comments on this video, but I still wanted to chime in. When it comes to Beyond and Impossible, I love the taste of both. However, for me, Impossible has a fatal flaw. It's just so darned heavy! I'm not talking weight of course, but the heaviness I feel when I eat it. The first bite is heaven, the second and third bites are delicious, then I'm done. It feels like lead in my belly. The Beyond burger, on the other hand, is my dream vegan burger. It tastes amazing, but it doesn't feel like I swallowed an anchor. I'm loving your reviews. Thanks so much!!
We made enchiladas for my extended family with impossible and not a single person realized there was no meat. Several thought it was the best ground beef they had had. I can tell in a burger but in sauces (chili, spaghetti etc) hard to tell. Just tastes like some different flavor choices. No one can usually tell.
I really liked your rankings. Really liked it that you mentioned the calories and protein content per serving, but you should also mention the weight of each serving.
Thank you for talking about the prices! One of the reasons I struggled with going vegetarian years ago was that I didn't know how expensive it would be.
I feed my kids the impossible burgers and they like them, but I will be trying the Whole Foods ones and I will give the beyond burger another try because in the past I did not like them. Thanks for this video
I hope you’ll make more of these videos! I find them very helpful since food is expensive and it’s nice to know your opinion and consider that when making choices at the store.
I feel like the only difference taste wise between the impossible burger and real meat is that it’s not as greasy. That’s literally the only difference to me. When u cook it, add in a literally extra oil to the impossible burger. It taste exactly like real meat when I do this
i have had a decent amount of these, and i only like the impossible! i like it more than i used to like real burgers too :] i love the beyond sausage a lot, but the burgers have a very off taste for me. would love a video like this for vegan chicken nuggets too, especially since the new arrival of the impossible nuggets! xo
@@EllenBeal i made a typing mistake!! i only like impossible burgers, the rest of these options are gross to me. i like the beyond sausage but find the burgers very rank!!
I'm normally a massive fan of beyond meat burgers and I was super excited to see McDonald's have teamed up with them to make the first vegan burger. But it's nothing like the normal beyond meat burger :( more like dog food... Really interested in trying the 365 one now tho. So cheers for the video 😁
:) Great video. Informative and easy to understand, organized, fun, well made. Doing a pros and cons at the end to sum up each burgers highlights with a side column of what you found the textures and tastes to be would be really great! Especially for those who like to learn through reading. Points like "needs to be thawed" or "sensible price for quantity or quality". Plants and hanging fruit basket are lovely.
Hey hey!! Sooooo....from someone who uses the Gardein products a lot, You need to know that Gardein's cook times are a mess. If you cook their products for a little over half the time that they tell you to cook them, you will get a much better product. I don't know how they're so screwed up that if you cook them to the package recommendations everything turns out to be cardboard or a hockey puck...🤷🏻♂️ but if you cut it in half you get a considerably superior product. Fyi. 😊 Thanks for making this video, and all of your videos!! They're all very helpful and informative. ❤️❤️❤️
🍔 Gardein Burger Tip: After browning, and a splash of water, cover, and allow to steam for a couple of minutes. Makes a world of difference. Those used to be my favorite, and then the Ultimates came out (I cook them the same way), and I’m hooked. Beyond and Impossible come in second for me now. 😁
My partner and I are not plant based/vegan, but we try to be mindful of reducing our animal product consumption where we can, and we pick Impossible meat OVER ground beef more often than not these days. You’re not kidding when you say it’s better than a burger… it is! The breakfast sausage is amazing too. I used it in my stuffed mushrooms for thanksgiving, and the veggies in the room were so excited to have a “real” stuffed mushroom. I will never use animal meat for them again!
In Germany we've got a brand called vegetarian butcher. They are awesome, the most real thing I've ever tasted. Burger King partnered with them here and they veganize their menu (every promotional menu burger available vegan, vegan nuggets, vegan whopper, vegan long chicken, vegan nugget burger and even vegan big king). When I tried it first I asked a meat eating friend to try if they didn't give me a meat one by accident. She couldn't tell. 😂!
I find it odd your beyond burgers are frozen. Here in the UK you get them from the fresh isle. Top tip is that if you cover the pan with a lid while cooking all the juices stay with the burger and makes it 1000% times better, also good tool for melting vegan cheese on top before serving 👍🏻
I searched the comments and was disappointed to see no one showing love for the Pink Panther reference. That scene is so perfectly funny. I was happily surprised to see you acting it out
I always use Impossible meat to make Hamburger Helper Stroganoff, so good, and I add 1 medium onion too, the best :) I don't know how they do it, but the sauce packet is so good, my daughter and I eat the whole thing as it is just delish!!
I love impossible burgers. Beyond Meat is overpowering in burger form, but their sausage links seem promising. Impossible patties, I smother those in beefless bouillon, lots of black pepper, dash of msg and I put them on the smoker until I think they're done. So freakin delicious, even my meat-eater dad loves them.
i went out and tried the whole foods burger bc of this and it was like a school cafeteria burger patty if you're into that, but Im not. I personally feel like boca is pretty similar, but better and cheaper. Beyond is still the best store-bought vegan burger imo.
