Just when I think the videos cant get any better, Allen drops another frag! His problems are my problems, it's like he lives at my place! Now this is a real world gardening channel! No fluff and BS to be had here! No wonder the channel is growing, people are tired of non real world "advice"!

I have found that cardboard or any flat material like a spread-out tarp kills some grasses after a few weeks so when I want to dig a space to plant vegetables, I don't have to fight grass and roots. I don't have to mow either because it is only bare dirt usually left.

In my area, there are goat rental services for weed control. One of them is called "Goat Munchers." You just have to keep the goats from eating the good plants.

You cracked me up the way you would say "hori hori" Lol. Weeds are a drag. I have a bad back and bought one of those weed torch attachments. Works ok but not as good. I gotta get used to it.

I’ve seen the hori-hori tool in catalogs and online, and wondered how effective they are. Looks like it makes easy work of weeding. The only time I’ve ever used chemicals is when I had to eradicate invasive running bamboo in my back yard wooded area, and then I hired a professional ecologist for the job, where he fabricated his own solution from the glyphosate that I gave him.

I use my corona folding hand saw for all my weed extractions in the gravel yard as the teeth will grab the roots and I can pull them up intact. Some times a hula hoe and other times its my gas echo weed whacker! Never ending job for sure lately with all the rain we have gotten in the valley!

Hi Alan, that first weed you show is actually prickly lettuce. It is used for pain. :-)

Just got my hori hori knife! It's awesome!

I don't know if it helps, here is an idea. I was buying some fruit trees in a nursery and I saw there that soil in all pots where covered with cloth. Unfortunately, they remove that cover when they sell a plant (so i don't have my own experience with it). I asked them what is the purpose, my thought was it's from squirrels digging into soil (that the problem i have in my area) or weed control, but they told me it's for moisture retention - i would never guess that:) and they don't have automatic irrigation on their nursery.

elaine inghams points about weeds are interesting, that they wont thrive in more fungally dominant soil taming weeds in a large area seems like a fun challenge though, hope i get to try it one day
