The stereotyping of scooters for use in town is so off the mark. I am a big bike rider and tour every year on big bikes until my touring buddy had a life changing crash on his zzr1400. He lost use of his left leg and could only ride a step through vespa. So i bought a bmw c400gt and we did a tour from north wales to norway and it was the most enjoyable tour i have ever done. Relaxing, still able to have fun on twisties, cruised at 70-75mpg on fast roads, 80mpg, found we stopped more at view points as easier to jump on and off. Super comfortable, great storage, bmw integrated satnav is brilliant. So i just wish people would stop calling maxi scooters town machines! Sorry, hit a nerve, love your channel and normally in tune with you.

Yes I completely get that and should have made that point - I try and review a bike in it’s given environment and in the main scooters are intended as urban transport of course…

I rarely take big bike out now. So relaxing on scooter and weather protection is great this time of year, and heated seat and grips make recent cold weather rideable. Off to picos (spain) in may on it. Made me realise that biking isnt all about hp, the enjoyment is about being outdoors in the elements, on windy roads, cafe stops, scenery, mateship. Thanks to TMF for doing a scooter review even if he didnt talk up the potential beyond town riding.

As others have said while great in town, you can happily tour on a Tmax or any of the big maxi scooters. For me, belt drive, under seat storage and CVT make the maxi scooter a more practical touring machine than the majority of regular motorcycles.

After 45 years on motorcycles of all sizes and types, spine problems made getting on and off motorcycles an awkward and painful act. So I was "forced" to buy a Honda SH300i (pizza delivery) style scooter. Took a few miles to get used to, but now I wonder why didn't I get one sooner. Light (big bonus with a bad back), cheap to insure, 90+ mpg and can sit at 70mph with the wife on the back with plenty left in reserve. CVT transmission is brilliant on tight twisty roads. Around town or long trips it's surprisingly capable.

I am 66 in a few months, and before I committed to buy a Yamaha TMAX tech Max 560, ... in August 2020 I was going to buy a Yamaha fjr1300, however I was basically Persuaded by a good friend, who had part exchanged his Yamaha tracer 900 for a Yamaha TMAX tech Max 560, He is an ex motorcycle trainer, and he also Owned an FJR 1300,which he said was a great bike but a bit on the heavy side.....( and there are days when you just don't feel like it)lol. he told me straight ..that I had no idea just how brilliant the TMAX was, I didn't believe it myself, until I had a go, And I thanked him for pointing me in the right direction, these bikes/ maxi scooters are NOT just for riding around town, it is a fantastic capable machine, a lovely pillion seat for my wife, and backrest as I have top box, so the wife regularly comes with me on trips, and loves it...the TMAX not only has the agility, economy, comfortability, practicality, filterability,Toysability, lol It also has the looks, and great weather protection it sticks to the road like glue, and is a great bike for touring ..mine is a 2020 model, I've already done 36,000 miles on it, no problem whatsoever, I use the motorway 6 times a week, and I can easily get up to 100 mph just on the slip road before I have even joined the motorway!, i have taking it to its top speed of 115 mph, but it certainly loves cruising at 90, for very long periods,it does 0 to 60 in under 5 seconds, a very nice place to sit and stretch your legs and relax, and enjoy the ride, like my friend told me..... I have no idea!!... many motorcyclists out there scorn scooters, but I can tell you, this is more like a motorcycle.... and just like I was!.... they have ....no idea!.Check. Cager on two wheels... and Mark Pulling, they also do a cracking review on this bike... personally I haven't looked back,.. and the only other bike I would fancy buying, is a Honda Goldwing... great review Andy,👌🏽but you did miss out on taking it on the Open Roads!👍🏽😊💙 it really is a refined, and linear bit of kit.

I ran 3 tmax models in a row from about 2012-2020, and did about 75,000km over that time. I have had many bikes and scooters, even a diavel. The tmax was my transport for everything during that time, and it is the best bike I have owned of them all. Even wen I had a few bikes, the one I would choose to ride was tmax. The only gripe I had, it just needs a wee bit more power, maybe a 650-750 motor.

Great review thanks TMF. I discovered the TMax about 10 years ago and I have never been without one since. I now have the grey TechMax like your test bike. I have ridden her from the UK down to Italy in 2 days and wowowow she is an amazing bike. Fast, comfortable and fairly good on fuel too JUST as much fun as my FJR1300 really and much less heavy when you push her on or off the centrestand or into a parking space. This one replaced a 530DX which was also very good but the TechMax handles even better and the electronics are fantastic!! Yes, very expensive but I think that you get what you pay for.

Own a burgman 400, limited edition. Now with 14,000 miles, 2010 model. Got shot of my Yamaha tracer, as I never ever get num bum on my burgman, and much prefer an automatic, than gears. Now I’ve got scooters in my blood, and I do fancy a tmax 560, but wandering if I’ll make the correct move, as the burgman is at a fraction of the price. But hey, you only get one life. Back in 2016, I rode my 110cc Yamaha scooter for over 650km in a single day (taking breaks at intervals), and I am so glad I did so, took my mind off things. Only felt the need for more power on empty highway stretches, where couldn't go beyond 80km/h. The Yamaha being reviewed now is way more powerful and advanced with adequate wind protection to be restricted for city rides imho.

Good review. Just to augment some of the other comments about the bikes natural habitat. I have been the owner of a Burgman 650 for 15 years. All tricked out for touring with 52litre sidecases, top box and of course the standard 52 litre under seat storage. All I have ever done on the bike is tour, U.K. and Europe - two up, mostly one week tours but often two weekers (hence maxing out storage). A few years back I had a mid life crisis and seriously considered swapping horses to a Gold Wing, after much agonising my head (rather than my heart) ruled that out - capital cost, less storage and no real world advantage in terms of performance (for me) as I exclusively travel or the roads less travelled and avoid motorways and dual carriageways wherever possible. So yes scooters and maxi scooters are great urban warriors but a maxi scooter has great touring potential that should not be prejudicially dismissed.😀👍

After riding 1000s and 600s for years I finally realised how far scooters had moved on and bought an Xmax 400. That was promptly stolen (😡) so I replaced it with an Forza 300 which is a fantastic machine. Loads of storage (more than the Tmax), so relaxing to ride and I'm currently getting nearly 90 MPG out of it. Although I have taken it on a 200 mile day trip, more power on motorways and cruise control would be really helpful on longer trips so I have been looking really closely at the TMAX. As others have said it's a real shame this review didn't include bigger roads - a rare omission from your usual excellent vids Mr. flyer. One final thing that others don't seem to mentioned here and which I find surprising is that unlike standard bikes, there is no messing around on your knees with oily chains or a scotoiler with a scooter! That is a massive benefit as far as I'm concerned. Bizarrely Honda have stuck a chain on their Forza 750 which is the main reason I wouldn't buy it - it's quite a bit cheaper than the Tmax and has more power. Thanks for the video anyway and do another one on bigger roads please :-)

The top speed will be way higher than 100 mph. I owned a T-Max 500 for some years and I, being 6 foot 4 tall and weighing in at a whopping 120 kg, could comfortably cruise at 100 mph with it. Top speed? Unknown, as the speedometer "only" reached 180 kph and the T-Max 500 effortlessly pushed way past that. As to the balancing of the engine, the T-Max has the two pistons mounted parallel to each other on the same crankshaft tap, so they move exactly the same. The balance comes from a huge counterbalance "dummy" piston, that's mounted on an opposing crankshaft tap, therefore moving at 180 degrees offset of the two pistons, eliminating their momentum almost completely.

I'm always interested in these modern scooters, having commuted to work on 250cc and 600cc scooters for several years. Honestly the smaller (single-cylinder 250cc) scooter was the more convenient in town, with a better power/weight ratio for cutting through traffic or getting away at the lights, and being much lighter for wheeling around or squeezing into parking spaces. There was no difference between them in storage capacity. I expect that you'll be doing a follow-up review including some out-of-town riding: that is when it's worth having the larger bike, which is more than capable of long inter-city trips in comfort and at speed.

I've loved every minute of riding it, but I can't wait to upgrade. I would like the Tmax but it's just due to the price of them I'll probably get an AK 550. While the 300 is great, I do want the bit more power. I'm pushing 60,000 km on the J300 and it runs like new still. Never misses a beat. I'll run it to 80,000 km, assuming it continues to be trouble free, and then upgrade.

I have ridden bikes for over 30 years and have a lot of time for scooters. Easy to ride, practical and plenty of storage. Only thing that stops me from owning one is their attraction to thieves. I owned a PCX 125 along with my Shadow 1100, which I used for day to day commuting. In just over 12 months there were 3 attempts made to steal it before it was taken from me at traffic lights. That experience has put me off owning a scooter again.

My wife had the quarter pounder burgman 400 for ages and would constantly make fun of how much cheaper it was back then to the super low. Fast forward to now and the Tmax is the only big scooter around. For the hefty price they still sell well with the ubiquitous apartment dwellers who have dropped their cars for an all purpose machine. They are not small and have presence. But watching you it handled perfectly on our pothole strewn roads, with all the equipment of a high spec motorcycle I can certainly see the attraction, and as you so rightly say you can tour on any bike, and the T max being no exception from that rule. The 2022 TMax blurs the lines in the scooters v motorcycles argument. I've just bought one after having a BMW K1600 and wouldn't go back. It has all the toys you need and is much easier to handle and dare I say it more comfortable. It's natural home is not the urban environment though Andy, it's all roads. This thing will tour, scratch and commute with equal aplomb. Thanks for a great video as usual.

While I think the T-Max is a great bike the elephant in the room is the price. You can have more power / speed and an auto 'box in Honda's NC750X DCT and for less than 2/3 thirds the Yamaha's price and that's tough to beat these days.

I've been riding bikes now for 45 year's recently traded one 1 of my bike's, Ducati 1100 Scrambler Special for the younger brother of that Scoot, the X Max 300. I absolutely love it, it has more space under the seat than the Tmax, 45 litres, so two full face helmets. And will go,with a lump like me on it 120kmh! (10klm's over the national limit.) Still getting 2.5liters to 100klms, and a range of 550ish klms. 😃 Still like my big Super Tenere for longer fast rides with my ride group, but the Xmax 300 will do all the same stuff almost as well. That TMax though if it wasn't so expensive I'd trade the Tenere for it, may still do that if a good second hand one comes up. 🥰

Love the Tmax, on my second, like to get the base models and then spec up with lots of shiny bits and an Acropovic, no interest in cruise, electric screens etc which has put the price up hugely. To spec one of the new machines up would push the price into the stratephere, so sadly decided to keep my 2020 and will have bought my last Tmax. Shame

I have a techmax 560. Some important thing that you might want to try/consider. 1. Two up at low speed, the bike is, in my opinion, is very unstable. I suspect too much weight over too small a wheel diameter. 2. Unless you are well over six feet in height you seriously run the risk of dropping the bike whilst trying to heave it on to the centre stand. Or even getting your feet flat on the floor. I am 5’ 11” and am on tiptoes most of the time. Never the less a great bike!

I cannot recommend super scoots enough. I broke my hand racing an enduro and so bought a little forza 300. Such a delightful little machine, so much fun. Its actually changed my stable, its so practical I dont need another 'proper' practical bike so got a silly sunday bike instead. An interesting thing to note is that when Ive spoken to some bikers about them the response is often....yeah yeah...but I wouldnt be seen dead on one!!! and it is they that are missing out. Most amusing of all is that many bikers dont nod back at me on the scoot, prompting the question, are they waving and nodding at the bikes....or the rider?

At £13,800 i would take an educated guess that most people wouldn't buy this just to commute round towns. As others have said this kind of scooter would likely be used for longer distances. The price is close to that of a suzuki GSX GT or Tiger GT pro so it begs the question will they sell many. I would be interested in your opinion on the Honda Forza/ADV 350 as at under £6k i see this as more of an affordable commuter.

I had a 2012 T-Max 530. An outstanding bike, whether you call it a scooter or motorcycle. It replaced a 2017 Honda CB 500F. The T-Max is a much better motorcycle, in every way, than the CB500. I'd absolutely have another if they were still sold in Canada. Yes, they are expensive, but they are superb bikes. And one minor curiosity; of all the bikes I've had, this was the only one my wife felt comfortable on. (Yes, a very minor point). Thanks for the ride. Nice to see the new T-Max on the road.

Good overview Andy and you rarely get it wrong but sadly a massive undersell of the touring potential of this bike, Early assumption of it being made for the town, which as a 125 it would be, but these like the 650 Burgman are built as much for the open road as the urban environment. I toured Scotland on my big Suzuki Burgman and it handled it easily as well as the big BMW's that I was with. If you have the bike any longer than a day try it out on a longer faster ride and she will love it, as will you! Shame this didn't reflect the real potential.😁👍

A scooter to drool at, but beyond the reach of many. As some reviewers below have pointed out, the Honda 350, (330cc) scooters are probably a better buy. 39% - 42% the cost of a TMax Techmax in the UK. The acceleration of the TMax is only marginally better to 62mph on the TMax than the Hondas. 5 seconds approx (speedo), compared to 6 to 7 seconds. Add 10% for real readings. Source: Benalrida

I am pretty sure that this type of bike isnt just for the city, as it can pretty much do it all ( off roading aside) pop to the shop, take it to work 100 miles away (daily) touring, likely 2 up touring at that, and the suspension, brakes and engine also allow it to be good enough for playing and some good b road bashing, of that i am sure.
