Since Israel's inception, the Haredi - ultra-Orthodox adherents of Judaism -have been exempt from the country's military conscription laws. But their growing population, coupled with their high unemployment rate and dependence on state benefits, sparked outrage within the country's secular majority. After years of demanding that the Haredi share the responsibility of serving in the armed forces, the Israeli government passed an unprecedented law in March 2014 that requires Haredi men to serve in the military.
The decision resulted in major opposition from the Ultra Orthodox community, from violent protests to religious leaders demanding that no one should comply. VICE News travels to Israel to speak with hardline members and leaders of the Ultra Orthodox community as well as soldiers in the Netzah Yehuda, the IDF's Ultra Orthodox Battalion, to get their take on the government's decision.

They don't advocate for the joining of government and religion, or forcing others to follow their way of life (see Saudi, Afghanistan, Iran). More importantly, as this video suggests, in Judaism the most orthodox stay away from violence, and in Islam, it's the opposite.

Best information I could find is that 68% of Haredi now support the IDF and since the war has ramped up, over 2000 have enlisted. I’d like to see the numbers from when this documentary was put out but that’s harder to come across.

Those who built the masjid were the people who followed the teachings of the prophets who in turn received the teachings from Allah. +Gulroz Khan Israel is a democratic secular state. It is the homeland of the Jewish people, but also the country of all of its non-Jewish citizens as well. If Satan's law means a combination of British common law, and Ottoman land laws then that is what it is. It also abides by the stipuations of the League of Nation's Mandate of 1922.

Fearing that joining the army would take them away from their religion is like screaming my belief is weak and it wavers at every turn. Pretty sure it’s written in Judaism scripture somewhere that capital punishment is condoned. Yeah because Judaism has ALWAYS been a peaceful religion. No violence whatsoever. u probably never served in the army and it's okay, but they fear not because their belief is weak, but because the army can't allow them to practice all the judaism stuff they want to, yes they serve with other Haredim but they don't practice everything they would before the army, so no, they aren't affraid that their sons will stop beliving, they are afraid the army will force them to not practice judaism. im the oposite of a Haredi btw, it just makes sense.. but then also it's mandatory and they are a part of the country so they must go! No government assistance is kind of extreme, they could do something like with other countries that have a separation between citizens and permanent residents. So no voting, you can't run for government office (maybe for a community like the Haredis, they can only be allowed to run in districts where they're the majority), and REDUCED but not no government assistance. After all think about it this way - in Israel women serve 1 year less than men, but they don't get any reduced legal benefits because of that.

So I'm not even saying that's never been required until now by modern governments. I'm saying homogeneity has never been required until now by you.

If they're failing any group, be it the majority or the minority, it's their job to fix it for EVERYONE, so that EVERYONE can enjoy the freedoms and protections that EVERY tax-payer ought to be entitled to. Also, I am against any sort of special treatment of any group, under a single government, as if we're all paying the same taxes, we should all be enjoying the same rights, protections, and freedoms. The onus is in the government to make those freedoms flexible enough that any reasonable person should have no issue obeying the law, regardless of creed, race or culture.

one important thing to note: In Israel, if you don't serve in the IDF in many ways you are restricted from joining the workforce. as a result of this, the chareidim cannot gain meaningful employment. they would be able to change the "financial burden" if they wanted but they simply want to crush the hareidi community in any way possible and will do no such thing

Lol they don't call themselves ultraorthodox, they call themselves haredim. But Judaism has generally been divided into three sections, reform, conservative, and orthodox. There is a large variety ranging from the most modern orthodox and the most religious orthodox. Therefore, haredim are called ultra orthodox. You won't find haredim who disagree with this label as it is very accurate in its description.
