Religious nuts particularly hate Lawrence Krauss because he says things like "forget Jesus, stars died so you could be born." Which is a powerful statement.

+greenytaddict I would love a 1 on 1 discussion with Dawkins. He has repeatedly hinted at a deeper understanding of things that he knows people just aren't ready to hear. Listening to him describe phenotype properties involved in evolution is so deep and multidimensional. He obviously has a tremendous depth to his logic which has uncovered things that almost nobody is ready to grasp.

Dawkins has interesting thoughts on why north America still has such a problem with the persistence of religion. He suggests that it might be the free enterprise, competing nature of American religion, in contrast to the boring, imposed from above, state religions of Europe.
@mrkrabappleson
@mrkrabappleson 8 лет назад
+Breandán Mac Séarraigh State sponsored religion seems like AT LEAST an equal "problem" to me. Europe has religious PUBLIC schools too. Combine that with the fact that the U.S. officially ejected religion from government LONG before Europe did along with the fact that Europe still has the fucking "Divine Right of Kings" nonsense and the U.S. comes out looking pretty damn good. We also can't forget that some of the largest most outspoken atheist groups come from the U.S.
@breandanmacsearraigh6938
@breandanmacsearraigh6938 8 лет назад
I'm full of admiration for Jefferson's separating of state and religion and yes, Europe still hasn't caught up. We don't really have 'divine right' of kings anymore. But my point was that although we have many state-sponsored religions in Europe, people don't seem to take religion as seriously here as many people do in the southern states of the USA.

32:17 ... It is remarkable to hear an atheist materialist like Richard Dawkins stating that he wants to know/discover the "nature" of consciousness ... This statement of his is on the one (ideological/philosophical) hand rather enigmatic and on the other hand rather promising. ..... Who knows what the future may bring ? ... One thing is certain ... Science and philosophy (!) are fascinating and exciting ... :)

the question at 14:45 that richard was addressing they were talking about natural selection and being able to predict the future of a species undergoing natural selection i think a simpler way of answering that then the way dawkins put it is thats basically what artificial selection does to a degree it shows potential and of course very real paths a species can go down.

about the AI question: Biological Brains evolved in an environment in which their goals were set to eat, mate and survive in generel. Even if you use evolutionary algorithsms to create AIs this would be a form of breeding. so the only goal of this evolution would be "to be liked by humans" which could translate to "appear as humanlike as possible". The need to survive for example is nothing that puffs into existence in a Mind when the factor of dying has never had an influence in his evolution.

Really looking forward to seeing this movie, as far as I can tell it isn't available on UK Netflix yet. What is extremely encouraging to see is the groundswell against religion. In an ever more connected world we see that the problems that face us have their roots in religion which after all has been the guiding 'wisdom' behind our ruling classes for millennia. We desperately need to move on and religion will no longer be able to suppress science despite the best efforts of the media corporates and the neoliberalists. I'm quite sure the Pope would like to silence Dawkins as he did Galileo if this were possible today. We face major problems and our very survival is in doubt, causality is certainly in religion and belief in the supernatural because we don't commonly adopt rational discourse and behaviours. The greatest evil (I don't use the word lightly) that religion does is to delude people and rob them of reason through fear - it is the tool used to instil faith through abuse of the imagination. It is corruption on a global scale.

best part is 15:30 .... does he believe in God?
@CrucibleKillah
@CrucibleKillah 9 лет назад
here is what comes to mind when someone asks me does god exist - the more knowledge your consciousness absorbs, the farther you grow from the illusion of reality. 'Reality" being the materialistic power-struggle over green velvet paper, and those within that realm who blindly follow within this "reality". I think the people who know what I'm talking about, will identify with what I'm about to say. Once you've TRULY broken through that illusion, you go through a phase where you no longer see "purpose" in life. Not in a depressive context. You still desire life, but you no longer feel as if you have a real "purpose", because you've broken the illusion of "reality", and it wasn't meant to be broken. Since you can now see outside of this "reality", you begin to feel cursed. Almost regretful that you broke this illusion. You do not regret the knowledge, but you regret the outcome of understanding the knowledge itself. You're now free, but the freedom seems virtually useless. I went through another phase two years ago. I began to focus more and more on every single present moment of my life and began to train myself to never let a single moment go by without experiencing it and capturing it. Love and Fear, are the only two real emotions, everything else is just a variation of those two basic emotions. Joy and Depression, are only variations of Love and Fear, and once you understand that, you begin to realize that the complexity of the human mind can be broken down and you will begin to truly truly truly understand yourself for the first time ever in your life. So, what is happiness? Is it purpose? Is ignorance bliss? Is it enlightenment? The journey to enlightenment? Personally, I believe happiness is the ability to fully exist moment to moment in a balanced aspect. Being able to exist happily in every present moment, makes the past one with the present, and the future able to co-exist with the present. It's quite amazing how music can translate thoughts for us

I don't know how you can ascribe to the idea that man knows enough about the Universe to BELIEVE in science rather then just using it to navigate along with all things we experience and call yourself "unbelievers". And yet here are Dawkins and Krauss holding to the idea that humans are just another form of life and yet so special that we can trust our understanding of the Universe to other humans.
@mercedesbenz3021
@mercedesbenz3021 8 лет назад
+Irish Druidess Hmm, well, looking at the computer/phone you typed this one- humans have a pretty stellar track record due to their "understanding universe." We make three basic assumptions: 1. The universe exists. 2. We can learn something about it. 3. We can follow models of predictability. These seem to work, my friend.
@irishdruidess7391
@irishdruidess7391 8 лет назад
I guess it depends on what one believes is important as to how one views our "track record" if we look at accomplishments we find the things we have been successful at. If we think about what our purpose is what the point of existence is, we have done very little to progress. It seems to me that today their are people who believe in science rather than just using it as a tool to navigate life. Science does many noble things, providing an accurate model for existence and purpose is not one of these.
@mercedesbenz3021
@mercedesbenz3021 8 лет назад
Irish Druidess The PhDs I know acknowledge science as a _tool/method_ for navigating and succeeding in/facilitating life. Science doesn't have a "mission to understand the _purpose_ of life;" we'd be assuming that our giant chemical-reaction-selves _have a purpose,_ which would shift a rather scientific discussion into one of philosophy. Anyway, you wrote a fantastic comment, Irish.
@ChrisJones-vf8dy
@ChrisJones-vf8dy 8 лет назад
+Irish Druidess As a humanist I don't think humans need science to give us a purpose we give ourselves purpose be it family, hobbies or a career. Just as we don't need to say God has a purpose for us.
@irishdruidess7391
@irishdruidess7391 8 лет назад
These things may be true. I think that we all look for purpose in many different areas. Science is great for helping humanity live longer and easier lives, this being said the purpose of science for people who believe rather than use science seems to be a kin to religious beliefs.

It seems to be impossible to change the ignorant from using the term "Theory". It seems to me it would be easier to have scientists to change the name of a more proven idea. "Theorem" seems to be a better choice, as it would be less confusing.

We generally don't do any of this stuff in the UK or even most of western Europe. We generally don't do believer, non-believer or agnostic. If we had a term for our general position it would be NO POSITION. We generally don't own a bible, read a bible or go to church except for traditional weddings and funerals. We might put CofE on a birth certificate or census form but only because that's what it said on ours. Only 1 in 60 Brits go to church. The NO POSITION is the position we hold wrt having a favourite colour or number or wrt UFOs or ghosts. We might watch a TV programme on UFOs or ghosts but only for entertainment. Sorry I have forgotten to use the word generally but please accept that I always mean generally. NO POSITION means not going there, not checking out the cosmological argument or the argument from design. We have never heard anyone say hallelujah and if we did we would move away from them. Even our churches don't sell anything other than BELIEF and FAITH and haven't really done anything other since Soren Kierkegaard. Neither do we read Darwin or Dawkins on evolution. We just take Plato's advise "if you have a medical problem, see a doctor". That is, we don't read medical books if we have an illness, we trust the NHS and medical science. Similarly, we don't try to audit physicists, chemists or Dawkins. We are just happy that there are millions of scientist in thousands of disciplines doing their core business and giving us cures for Ebola and Zika.

+David Lilley pretty much the same here in Russia. hardly anyone goes to church, only for a funeral service etc. and I simply can't understand how such books as Ancestor's Tale can be shocking or mythbusting to anyone. to me it's just a much more thorough, detailed, analytical, more adult and more interesting version of any biology textbook for middle school. the Russian comments under American animated videos on evolution generally say "that's just like a chapter from a children's textbook, why is that news?" or something along those lines.

+Those Russkies I am also impressed by your English. I often say of evolution that it is just our history and "history is bunk". Popper even went as far as to say evolutionary theory doesn't pass the falsifiability criteria because it cannot predict the fittest, though he later mellowed this by admitting that one could be a scientific historian. I hope that your reading has included Popper's Open Society.

Has Dawkins and other rudely adamant atheists considered and allegedly refuted the Transcendental Argument for the existence of God? It’s seems to be faith to always be able to trust in the objectivity of the universe.

Some of the greatest thinkers of all time have rationally believed in the existence of God, or at least a higher power. Do I think some arguments for god are weak, yes! For example, the Anselm argument is incredibly weak for me. But not all arguments are. I would encourage you not to reply back as you think that all theists are stupid for believing in God. You new atheists type only like insulting theists.

I hope Mr Dawkins will respond and help me answer this question. anyone else who has a reasonable, rational, answer, I would appreciate it, contemplate it, credit it and possibly adopt that answer as sufficient ,only if the responder kept to certain, polite rules,,no profanity, name calling or unrelated to the subject, intentionally inflammatory or derogatory remarks,,please, I signed up here to learn ,not feel , please teach, dont preach. Anyways,,,, Mr Dawkins, 30 minutes into the video you said something that shocked me, you said, " I don't believe that we can have an absolute right or wrong, I don't think there can be absolutes in morality", ( I hope I quoted that correctly), .I must respectively disagree,, and I must honestly admit I did not know you held this view.. I thought we were looking for, gathering consensus and specifically defining morality, in order to objectively but absolutely , judge actions, ideas, dogmas, laws, and the like. I agree absoluteness is very hard to find, cultural diversity makes it almost impossible, but the way you said that with such certainty,,,well ... and I hope you understand I think you're like this too, my little "bell of truth " (ie: truth rings) went dead silent, after ringing continuously for a half hour. or how it does since the very first time I saw on RU-vid a new word, clicked on it just out of curiosity, and flipped the universe upside down. The word was...... Hitchslap, ,,... my question .which is more of a challenge,, can you refute this moral absolute,,,,,,,,,, to kill for the sole purpose of a perceived pleasure to be gained at the moment of the killing is wrong, IMMORAL ALWAYS ........ I see in my mind the wealthy, big game hunter , African safari type, in his trophy room of death, and him saying phrases like " thrill of the hunt" or pleasure of the kill", this also applies to many, regular everyday hunters, all the way down to the nasty little brat with a BB gun shooting birds and cats for fun. it's not the kill it's the reason for it that it is immoral, and I believe it is absolute. Thank you in advance for suffering through my long windedness.

Well, I think that this is a good question. The issue with morality is that you could ask 100 people this question and get 100 different responses. Morality is ultimately cultural and subjective. It depends on very many factors. I think that establishing legitimate moral absolutes might be possible, but we all have to agree on the method and come to a worldwide consensus. Obviously this will not happen anytime soon... mainly due to religion, among many other factors. Relative Morality allows humans to adapt to new social contexts and ideologies, thus increasing cooperation among different "tribes." How do you propose we arrive at these moral absolutes? Do you think everyone will fall in and recalibrate their moral compass?
@truthtrumpsdumbness638
@truthtrumpsdumbness638 9 лет назад
Great question , Mark Having seen many of Prof. Dawkins presentations , I think its safe to say that he didn't mean that there are no absolutes in morality - His point has always been that those "absolutes" cannot be determined or dictated by a religious book. So most reasonable people understand that killing for fun is unacceptable, by means of appreciating the "Golden Rule," which anyone can understand - i.e. we wouldn't like anyone to kill us or members of our family for fun - and therefore, our innate empathy informs us that killing others for fun is unacceptable - it's easy logic The higher point that you make is that only those who don't "get it " seem to need to grab hold of religion , in order to tell them what everyone else understands, already - Such characters who can't refrain from causing suffering or death to others, without the threat of a greater authority or a deity, are by definition ....psychopaths

Most of the problem is how atheists and theists talk to each other... If I call you an idiot are you going to listen to what I have to say?
@hiavatch
@hiavatch 8 лет назад
+Chris A I think most of the problem is that we make religion a special case. Look what happens when taxes are proposed to be lowered, or raised, by the smallest amount. If Obama wants to raise any taxes at all, he's a socialist, lol. We lambaste each other's points of view on economics, sports, politics and everything else... ...but don't call someone who thinks the Earth is 6,000 years old an idiot! If you do that, they won't listen to you... If tax policy mapped onto that, it would be like Obama in favor of a 99.999999% tax increase ;) Yet he's called worse than an idiot for far far smaller policy ideas, and vice versa when Republicans want to cut taxes. I think we need to stop worrying so much about who thinks what and just be honest. Those people who truly take offence at something an atheist says will probably never change anyway, just as many racists will die racist, no matter how you deal with them. You can give them stats, lol, or you can ridicule them, as we now do, make it taboo, etc.. There is no point, IMO, wasting time trying to convert the fish in that pond. If you want to take a gentler tack, I'm not opposing you. We need an 'all of the above strategy', but I don't complain when Dawkins or Krause says something provocative or even plain insulting.
@collinstiers434

+hiavatch perhaps we should be less insulting in general, I don't think in general that it is ok to turn what could be a rational argument based of fact science and faith, or even tax law, into an ad hominin attack
@hiavatch
@hiavatch 8 лет назад
+collin stiers I'd be all for that, as long as religion doesn't get a special place, like it does now. Right now, attacking religion is frowned upon, even though many ideas that come from religion are ridiculous. So if we were going to be less insulting in general, religion needs to come down here, with the rest of us, too.
