"When you come into this ungraspable place, Bankei taught, you are the wellhead of all the Buddhas and all the zen ancestors. You truly have within you, just as you are, the source. This place is the true centre of the universe, and to settle here is the work of a moment." - Julian Daizan Skinner
Zenways (www.zenways.org) promotes and encourages activities and practices that enhance human wellbeing, balance and awakening (satori or kensho - the enlightenment of Zen) in the many different situations we find ourselves in. Over many years of strict training, in Japan and the west, Julian Daizan Skinner Roshi received dharma transmission and permission to teach in both the Rinzai and Soto lineages of Zen. He now teaches at the Yugagyo Dojo in London, UK. May these recordings help you and those around you to find and realise the truth.

“Everything comes in waves” Something I always try to bear in mind. It’s especially true where pain is concerned something I know well from experience.

Yes, absolutely. But no need to create unnecesary pain - Bankei was very against that.

Going to have to try it again. I keep desiring to shed desire and keep seeking the one doing the seeking. That diamond drill. the unborn seems to that relief when you let succession happen. I just discovered Bankei while I'm riding in my truck across country and currently I'm in magical Arizona. 😂 🙏 🧘

I have both Waddell and Haskel’s books on Bankei. I also have Daizan’s “Practical Zen: Meditation and Beyond.” Bankei makes it sounds so easy. “Just listen with the Unborn Mind.” However, Bankei practiced very hard for a long time. The only other meditator who practiced a much and zealously was Bodhidharma. So I wonder, if Bankei appreciated the fact that laymen didn’t have his just sitting practice?

I agree, Keith. For some people it's exactly as easy as he says, for others there's quite a lot of preparation before this unborn abiding clicks - and I think we can include Bankei himself in that category.

Hello Keith, Daizan answered your question. You can find his response here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lGAphp9w834.html

Thanks for this talk and for reminding me to reread Chapter 3 of "Practical Zen." Previously I have been reading and following the instructions in Waddell's "Unborn" and Haskell's "Bankei Zen". My understanding was just to notice that when a bird makes its caw or other sound, the unborn mind naturally knows what kind of bird made the sound. Your meditation takes the zazen a lot further. I would never have thought to let go of the tanden as you write in Chapter 3. Thanks again.

There're interesting parallels between Bankei and the Soto approach. To me the unborn meditation feels like what shikantaza is supposed to be: awakening to one's inner Buddha-nature and to the direct realisation/experience of sunyata, rather than just sitting for sitting's sake.

Indeed. One of the things Bankei emphasised was that being in the unborn isn't just something we find in sitting meditation (shikantaza literally means 'nothing but just sitting') but somewhere we can inhabit in the whole of our lives - sitting, standing, moving, working, etc.
