The Unclouded Day | Josiah K. Alwood | NASA Apollo 8, X-15 | Eastern Mennonite HS Touring Choir 

The reading from the Book of Genesis 1:1-10 by Astronauts Air Force Major General William Alison Anders, Navy Captain James Arthur Lovell Jr., and Air Force Colonel Frank Frederick Borman II, on 24 December 1968, aboard Apollo 8. As the 3 astronauts orbited the Moon for a 9th time, they gave their 2nd TV broadcast. Borman introduced the crew, followed by each man giving his impression of the lunar surface and what it was like to be orbiting the Moon. Borman described it as being "a vast, lonely, forbidding expanse of nothing." Then, after talking about what they were flying over, Anders said that the crew had a message for all those on Earth. They then read from the Book of Genesis.
Some video clips are then shown regarding record-setting Flights 90 and 91 of the North American X-15 by NASA and the US Air Force on July and August 1963. These were the first X-15 missions that passed the 100-km high Kármán line above the Earth.
It is during these film clips that the Eastern Mennonite High School Touring Choir of Harrisonburg, Virginia sing, “Unclouded Day,” by Josiah K. Alwood, under the direction of Jared Stutzman. The touring choir sung on 15 April 2023, at the 59th (61st) Annual Mennonite High Schools Choral Festival. The piece was composed in 1885, and the text reads as follows:
O they tell me of a home far beyond the skies,

O they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise;
O they tell me of an uncloudy day.

O the land of cloudless day,
O the land of an uncloudy day.
O they tell me of a home where no storm-clouds rise,

O they tell me of that land far away,
Where the tree of life in eternal bloom

O they tell me of a King in His beauty there,

The hymn is based on the Book of Revelation 22: 2, 5
