So mantis guard? Makes sense seeing as he's from Atos... I played around with this when I first got my blue because I wanted something "impassable" I could troll higher belts with and completely shut down people around my skill level lol. The day I brought it to the gym almost no one could pass it and kept stubbornly trying to knee cut. This is cool and an expansion on the initial Keenan videos for me. A lot of rafa-esque stuff in this one with the back takes etc... and seems like it would work really well with the collar and sleeve de la riva he teaches that I'm playing around with now. Gonna combine the two. Great channel Jon your youtube channel is relatively new but I've watched and absorbed so much open guard knowledge from your videos already. Keep em coming! Thank you!
Jon could you do some more guard retention/defense vs passes, like smash pass defense Bernardo style/ over under pass defence/ and maybe some defense vs butterfly passes, my butterfly guards always getting passes especially vs bigger guys
Are there any good instructionals, or BJJ practitioners to follow, that use or expand on this? It looks right up my alley and I would love to see/learn more.
Zoetekauw Mikey Muscimeci uses it a lot he might have an instructional out somewhere with stuff in it on the position. Also Andy is really good at it. He’s suppose to start a RU-vid channel soon so maybe he will be putting up stuff on it
Any concern with the knee reap from here for ibjjf, particularly grabbing the belt from the underhook de la riva? I do this guard a lot but not sure what to stay away from in the wonderful world of DQ happy bjj circuits. Maybe just make sure you're not driving your opponent's knee to the mat to get behind them? Any concerns at all?
Travis Outten I think you are pretty safe with underhook dlr as long as you don’t deep lace your dlr leg and rip up hard on ankle, but honestly I’m not certain on the exact rules on that position anymore. I haven’t really seen anyone get dqed from here though
@@JonThomasBJJ Hi Jon, Since posting this, have you learned of any updates on this position/grips? Under IBJJF rules, is the underhook DLR allowed as long as the DLR hook is not a "deep" DLR hook to the far hip? Or is it only allowed if you remove your DLR hook from the near leg as soon as you gain the underhook grip to your shin? Thanks!
새틀슢보이 Hey buddy id have to see the situation for complete context but if you can shift them to the right then usually you should be trying to take them to the left instead, the big thing to understand is all techniques need to be done at the correct time, so it’s hard for me to say without seeing your exact positioning but if it feels really hard to take then to the right then it’s probably not the right moment for that move and try to explore other options in that situation to see what is available. Hope that makes sense.
