The Underrated Maps of Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'

The Hobbit, published in 1937 and written by JRR Tolkien, is one of the most acclaimed children's books of all time. It was the basis for the later Lord of the Rings series, and its world of Middle-Earth was born here. In this video, we'll look at the beautiful and incredibly immersive storytelling maps that Tolkien made for the Hobbit, and review how they were made and what makes them so worth loving.
Without a doubt, Tolkien's later maps from The Fellowship of the Ring and Return of the King get way more attention. I explore those in an earlier video that you can find here ( • Tolkien's Incredible M... ). However, these maps in the Hobbit are a great glimpse into Tolkien's early creative process, the importance of cartography and maps when he wrote and imagined the world of Middle Earth, and his love of geography and worldbuilding.
Bilbo's journeys with the dwarves carried him across this land, only partially mapped, with so many mysteries left unopened. We are drawn across Mirkwood and the land of Smaug and the great Lonely Mountain. And, in fact, without Thror's Map, we would never have a Hobbit story at all.
My goal with this series is to explore the amazing maps that humanity has created over the span of human history, and to use these as ways to connect with our ancestors. I hope you enjoy going on this journey with me, and please let me know if you like this format and if you want to see more videos.
A huge thanks to everyone that helped to contribute to this video and whose works are featured here, including:

One thing I love about the Wilderland map is that it feels like you could sit under the trees. Your point that it's a storytelling device is a great one.

I just realized that it's the shadows under individual trees that may create that feeling.

I've been a huge Tolkien fan since I was 11 and it was the maps that really sparked my curiosity. I remember reading The Hobbit in school but being really captivated by the map of Wilderland and wondering what was off the borders of the map. That drove me to read LOTR and then delve further into the history. Really enjoyed the video. Thanks for creating it.

It amazes me how many content creators don’t get the thanks they deserve. A thousand views and only 70 likes 😢 hit the like button guys it goes a long way

5:25 I didn't even know William Morris wrote a book. I only knew his art. Got to say I think his map looks awesome. Now I want to check out his books.

I felt a little bad saying it didn't hold a candle to Tolkien... I actually think it was pretty great too :)

man these videos are great dude. I’m young and a bit inexperienced with maps but two that I’d think might be cool to make a video about: Marauders map and Narnia’s map. Might also be interesting to explore some videogame maps… in ur own unique style, like this, of course!

I love your content! Thank you! I would love to see Ursula Leguin's Earthsea maps, with the labyrinths and stuff covered. And I would love to see any maps on labyrinths. And not from fantasy: I would love to see you cover the map of the Treasure Island, as it was a chief motivator for R L Stevenson to write the story, and as a child it blew my mind.

Earthsea is great. (Books and the maps in them) I personally would also like a video about maps in the Wheel of Time.
