After the thunder and lightning of the last couple of days the weather in Barcelona settled down to allow the Louis Vuitton Challenger Selection trials to continue.
The weather forecast looked good for the day too with a light breeze that would gradually build….except that’s not what happened.
Instead, today was a day of intense competition and high stress for pretty much everyone.
Matt Sheahan reports from the heart of the action in Barcelona at the 37th America's Cup

"Nothing to be learned from the NZL vs FRA race" .... well, except the huge importance of being able to avoid falling off the foils in light airs, and even more importantly being able to get back on them quickly. ETNZ appears to be a little better at the first and much better at the second.

Love the addition of the country flag icons, with the team names. Thanks. FYI, at the end of the video, the overlay of the small picture in a picture box of other videos obscures a lot of the scoreboard.

It's the fluky winds and mistakes that are making it interesting. I suspect with a stable wind of 8-10 knots and an error free race it will not be as exciting. Too many free penalties given away by Ineos. On these boats boundary penalties are really unforgivable, as it coming into the box early. I notice ETNZ have yet to coceed a penalty.......

It must be much more difficult for the cyclors of a boat racing for the second time in the day to keep up their power, compared to a boat racing only once.
@irtnyc
@irtnyc 9 дней назад
Not really, only if they're injured in the first race (or sick). Racing twice a day doesn't affect peak performance in the second race, hours later. The limiting factor is how long they're asked to stay at max wattage. This is measured in seconds. To visualize more common examples: This is why tour de France sprints to the finish line don't start 10 miles from the finish line; but there (can be) multiple sprints during each stage. They can achieve same peak velocity at each sprint that day, but not continuously. Similarly an Olympic sprinter can (and often does) run multiple races each day, but can't sustain a world class 400 pace over a mile distance, ever. That's impossible.
@cooldude.1811
@cooldude.1811 9 дней назад
@@irtnyc Being a cycling aficionado myself, I take the point of cyclists conserving energy during a race, until the final sprint (or climb) as the case may be. However, my point was more regarding the cyclors of a boat which is racing for the second time in a day, vs a boat that is racing its first. Like yesterday's race between AM and Alinghi, where the American cyclors seemed to be on their limit. As I understand, unlike sprinters, who may require to put in a high-wattage anaerobic effort for a few seconds, cyclors have to maintain their peak wattage for a sustained duration.

Does anyone think there is a bit of tension between the two American helmsmen? All other teams seem to meld together well. Kinda farcical that the two main crewmen on American Magic are an Aussie and Pom, imo.

For me, it is good be cause it's not just a drag race. You have to sail the race and it brings in all the elements of sailing not just win the start blast around track job done. The variability means it's more competitive, you have to be the best team on the day for the conditions. That includes the whole team not just one element. What could be helpful is more coverage of the team.decision making and options to bring out the nuance of the sport.

It's hard to see why the New Zealanders after seeing their opponents splash down wouldn't splash down themselves so that they can still have a competitive race, it smacks of arrogance,, or is there something else going on? 🤔
@unikittythegamer4515
@unikittythegamer4515 10 дней назад
They are still practicing picking win shifts, manoeuvres, etc. under race conditions. I think splashing down to allow the other boat to catch up would look a lot more arrogant.

Excellent reporting & Pat U doing great interviews! They should not start races under 10 knots because match racing needs more wind & less off the damn foils!

Interesting then that the best match race of the event was today, in those "less than 10 knot" winds.
@jameslittle8891
@jameslittle8891 10 дней назад
Afraid the average wind in Barcelona at this time of year is 7.5knts so it’s most likely light air racing is what will happen for the rest of the regatta. Staying on the foils is the key, light shifty conditions ironically produces better racing in these boats.
