Donald A. Wollheim Short Science Fiction Story From the 1950s The Unfinished City
A Fantasy of perfection and imperfection. A tale of a quaint city in the jungle and the curious fate that overtook a very clever thief who came there. The Unfinished City by Donald A. Wollheim, that’s next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.
Another 5 star review on Apple Podcasts, just so you know, your 5 star reviews never get old! This from Slacker Jake, “Hooked. Hooked on the first episode the narration is great I can’t wait to listen to them all.” Thanks Slacker Jake. Just so you know, we are working hard to make sure you never get caught up!!
And a shout out to RU-vid listener scotleoqueen704 who had this to say, “Wonderful. My #1 fave sci-fi, DUNE and I'd give my right arm to have that 1st printing in the magazine. You're my #1 fave narrator of sci-fi.” Thanks scotleoqueen704! I don’t think you are alone in wishing you had the first appearance of Dune in the December 1963 issue of Analog science fiction magazine. Although it’s been said that Frank Herbert rewrote most of what originally appeared in Analog before releasing Dune in 1965. And thanks for your compliment saying that we were your #1 favorite narrator of sci-fi. That is quite a compliment. Thank you.
Donald A. Wollheim makes his 4th appearance on the podcast with an interesting short sci-fi story about a most unusual little city. Stirring Science Stories first appeared in February 1941, four issues later the 15 cent magazine was gone for good. Until now, we had never featured a story from the magazine.
Wollheim had an advantage over every other author who appeared in this, here today, gone tomorrow magazine, he was also the editor! Today’s story can be found in the last issue, and it is the last story ever to appear in the magazine. From March 1942, on page 60, The Unfinished City by Donald A. Wollheim…
Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Mad with despair, they fought back from the ruins. Whoever these invaders were, they should not have a world which its defenders themselves had destroyed! The Burnt Planet William Brittain

Love these 20 - 45 minute stories...just the right bite of time for a short story. Love your narration, characterizations, and selection.

@MichaelMMiddleton098 thank you for that awesome compliment and thanks for listening!! I do believe the majority of our stories are in that 20 to 45 minute sweet spot that you enjoy. There are some longer stories on the way but of course you can listen to them for as long as you want and come back and finish them whenever you like.

Thank you again, Scott. I am devouring your consistent content. I'm currently living in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, and your stories arrive at the perfect time for me. Just before I am ready for sleep. A perfect end to the night.

Thanx. That was almost like a Dr. Seuss meets the Umpaloopahs. Entertaining in a delightful way. Poeish retribution at the end.

Thanks for digging deep to unearth this. Fantasy fan Wollheim obviously knew his Dunsany and Clark Ashton Smith, but the story is good in itself.

Thank YOU @clarkdissneyer8225. Glad you enjoyed The Unfinished City. As I was reading your comment it hit me that we haven't narrated any stories by Dunsany or Clark Ashton Smith. Thanks to your comment we will fix that in the very near future!! Thanks for listening.

FUNNY FACT: This is the "architectural style" of most of Mexico...due to the fact of extremely high property taxes...which are only charged on COMPLETED structures. Consequently, the vast majority of homes and businesses have "incomplete" additions....a few reed bars and blocks sticking out of the wall...a tiny beginning on a second floor wall...anything to be able to call the building not finished yet...even if it's been that way for 30 years...

I love your stories and excellent narration but the accolades before every episode is becoming a bit tiresome

@dougscott4035 thanks for the compliment. As far as the "accolades" are concerned, I have always thought of it as a way of saying thank you to the people who support us. As such, it has never been tiresome for me. I do understand what you're saying and will keep it in mind as we work to improve every day. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and thanks for listening!!

@@VintageSciFiAudiobooksA suggestion: you could create video chapters by listing in the video description 00:00 Introduction 02:04 About the story 03:15 Story title Remember to start with 00:00 It will automatically create "chapters" in the yt video. So that people who prefer to skip the intro can do so without effort.

@copernicofelinis interesting! Since you brought it up I have two questions, #1 as a listener do you think I should create chapters? #2 Are you saying it will automatically create the chapters if start by typing 00:00 in the description and then all I would have to do is label those chapters? I really appreciate your comment and any help you can provide will be an added bonus. Thanks for listening!!

@@VintageSciFiAudiobooksI don't see my last answer here. Maybe you hold comments for moderation, or maybe it was lost (there's a storm here and wifi went off for a while) but the answer to both your question is yes. Yes, chapter for long stories are helpful. Yes, it is that easy, and can be done on existing videos too Edit, ah ok this comment went through with no delay, so it was the storm. 😁 BTW, thanks for your amazing work. It's a godsend for us insomniacs.

I usually move the line across to 1.30 to 2mins as I want to listen now. What about putting the accolades/ info at the end. I have often listened to info on other channels at the end when I've enjoyed something and want to know more. Thank you for all the amazing work.
