Venturi didn't say a liquid speeds up AFTER a constriction. It speeds up IN the constriction, otherwise carburettors, airbrushes and all that other good stuff wouldn't work as nice.

Guys review your Physics for this one. 1. The air doesn't speed up after the narrow section, but during. After it, it returns to the previous speed for the same initial width. Fyi: It's a divulgative video so this ain't too bad but heat is transferred, not stored. BUT 2. the reasoning that goes with it IS wrong: metal requires a lot less heat to go up a degree or two than other materials, like wood. Example: Oak timber requires 5 times as much heat as iron to go up a degree, so applying the same heat to both will increase the temperature of the timber by 1degree, and that of iron by 5 degrees. 3. Finally: CO2 stays at street level? This is contradictory with hot air flowing upward. And the CO2, NO2 produced by vehicles is clearly hotter than street air. I'd rather attribute the excess in pollution at street level to the fact that all that gas originates there so obviously cause it's near the origin there is more pollution. And you're right sister we gotta use the car less!

This happens in even smaller cities. In Memphis, Tennessee at the intersection of Third Street and Madison Avenue, the wind is brutal in the winter when a cold front moves in from the west. It is channeled between a 29 story building and a 28 story building. This is about a half mile from the river and about 40-50 feet above the surface of the river due to the river bluff.

A LOT of criticisms of the hostess in this video. She did a fine job. What is everybody complaining about? Not to mention, this--unlike almost EVERY other Cheddar video--seemed to have facts and plausible arguments, instead of nonsense. I don't agree with growing plants like ivy up the side of a building (for various reasons), nor do I want to see people discouraged from driving, so I don't think I agree with her, but her presentation lacked nothing. I think there are a lot of critics here who haven't got the ability to make a better video.

I high-key (thats my opposite of low-key since I'm yelling it in the comments) love that Ali was playing with toys at the beginning rather than the typical "youtube computer animation" bits that we all are far too familiar with. (Think round, featureless heads with simple eyes and a mouth that only would pop up when the person walking down the street was "pushed over by winds" accompanied by more simple shapes as body parts).

One thing that a surprising amount of people don't know: Trees actually only absorb CO2 while growing. Think of them as biological carbon storage (in the form of wood). That means that urban trees, that usually are already fully grown trees, absorb almost no CO2 at all.

This is anti-urban and misleading. You know what creates pollution? Cars. If Cheddar’s take here is that we should do more to combat the very real dangers of pollution and heat vulnerability in cities, maybe they should make some videos on congestion pricing, frequent transit, shitty federal transportation policies, the history of urban freeway development, performance-based zoning, bike/ped infrastructure, and on and on. Do better!

Imagine how beautiful and almost magical cities could look like if stepped vertical vegetation was a common sight.

The Venturi Effect is the opposite of how you just explained it. Also, You _CAN_ ... Say "Vortexes".. But common use of the word is "Vortices" It's not just more commonly used, it sounds cooler!

At 4:56, you show a car and say that a key solution to the pollution problem in skyscraper canyons might be for people to drive less. However, personal cars have a much smaller effect on air pollution that diesel trucks (www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/09/180910111237.htm). City living near skyscrapers tends to cut down on personal driving a lot, but does increase the requirement for trucks to bring in goods, since there's very little that can be created locally.

Sure driving less would help but so too would electric vehicles, one can argue about their benefit for global warming when powered from dirty grids but there is no dispute that moving the combustion away from densely populated areas and transporting the energy into cities in the form of electricity will reduce the exposure of humans to toxic combustion byproducts. A power plant 15 miles out in a rural area complete with high smoke stacks to avoid low level pollutant release will expose humans far less than the same energy being burned directly in the middle of downtown Manhattan and released right at street level. Also it is far easier to plan for and mitigate or even actively capture toxic pollutants from a single power plant than from the thousands of cars that plant is feeding with energy.

Imagine if there were hurricane force winds in Chicago.

Plus vertical vegetation is really not eco solution... You have to put more energy and pesticides for it to work it is basically better to not make green walls... And think abou all the water you have to pump up and plastic frames for implantation of green wall

The Venturi effect works exactly the other way around.

Gotta correct you on the Venturi Effect. As you pass into a constriction, static pressure will drop and airspeed will increase. But when you exit the constriction, static pressure will increase and airspeed will decrease.

Also, another major solution to the problem is to only allow electric vehicles to access the central business district, but have open suburban access to traditional ICE vehicles out there in suburbia.

The description of wind speed increase in a funnel is correct but that is not the Venturi effect. The Venturi effect is about pressure not speed.

Could one perhaps add bridges to facilitate walking between buildings without having to worry about the wind, snow, and rain?

Genuinely asking, would it not be easier to grow Ivy or hanging plants from the top of buildings? I know it would take a relatively long time to grow but would it not be as effective?
