With Sonic Origins Plus being announced a month ago, it sparked a thought that I’ve been meaning to discuss for quite some time. Sonic Gems Collection is an oddity in the realm of video game compilations, but in 2023, it might be considered worthless now. Why? Well I’ll try to explain it here.
This is my first Sonic video since 2021, so this might be one of the more rustier videos out there. Regardless, I hope you guys enjoy this little project I’ve been making for quite some time.

They actually were gonna include the Streets of Rage games and Bonanza Bros in the North American version, but were removed due to fearing of the game getting a Teen rating. Fun fact they did consider putting Sega Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles Chaotix, and Sonic Eraser in the compilation.

Yeah, I will be honest. Those other 3 Sonic games would have really fleshed out the collection, and those games were never released in other collections.

Weirdly enough, I think I've popped out my PS2 to play this collection way more than Mega Collection. I have a huge softspot for Sonic R and Fighters,

Me too! I was usually bored with the mega collection, and the gems collection was so interesting and had alot of cool things like the sonic artwork and others, and sonic the fighters and specially sonic r where my favorite

That's generally the kind of thing that happens when you keep making collections of old games for decades, especially if said collections are actually good. You're eventually gonna invalidate a LOT of older ones. Though it IS crazy that, despite how old Mega Collection is, it's still considered by many to be the best Sonic collection, and one of the best collections generally. Goes to show how much care went into it.

This take seems a bit unfounded. All of these pieces were really hard to find at the time, and even now we're missing Steam releases for everything excepting CD. I don't know what you think you're doing playing the 'emulate it lol' card when everything in Mega Collection can be played with controller support on html in seconds

I hard disagree with him, but, aside from their personal opinions, i feel that objectively the majority of this video was a bad take from someone who probably didn't grow up with the gamecube or just from a bad perspective. I'm also speaking from bias as I had this game as a teen but when I was young and a Sega fanatic and wanted to get my hands on anything Sonic related, Gems was a absolute treat. (Outside of emulation) its really the only way to play those game gear games until the Wii virtual console (arguably/technically emulation your paying for) and Sonic the fighters wouldn't be available until it's re-release in Playstation3 and Xbox360 arcade as a downloadable title in celebration of AM2 teams games. There is still no modern re-release of Sonic R to my knowledge. Sonic Mega collection and Gems are staples to my GameCube collection and I had played them all the time. What I'm trying to say is that it's specifically for Sonic fans of that time who loved playing and seeing those very obscure pieces of media they normally otherwise had no way of getting a hold of.

Sonic Gems was my whole reason for buying a (used) Gamecube. It was worth it for Sonic the Fighters alone. My only gripe is that Knuckles Chaotix is missing and continues to be neglected to this day.

This feels like a lot of nitpicking. I feel like you should have emphasized more this was the first time many of these games were made accessible again in then modern times. With a lot of people complaining about how companies refuse to re-release a lot of their legacy, it definetly had its place in history when it was released.

Some corrections I want to point out is that Sonic Drift 2 and Tails Adventure did release in America prior to this collection, and Tails Sky Patrol was included in Sonic Adventure DX as a bonus for completing mission before this game. Also, SA2B and SADX were released only on the Gamecube, not on all Gen 6 systems. Also, fun fact about Sonic Gems Collection, it also released in the PS2, but only in Europe and Japan.

L take, CD is notoriously hard to emulate, and Gems has the improved PC port of that original version, it's the closest you can get to that original 93 release without owning a SEGA Mega CD, and that authenticity is something a lot of people look for. Gems also contains the best version of Sonic R, it's the PC version with tiny enhancements and optimization, and playing it on console or even emulating Gems through Dolphin is way easier and more accessible than getting it running on modern PCs. And Sonic R is fucking awesome 😎

Sonic R is one of my guilty pleasures so, I somewhat agree 😎 I’m a bit surprised to hear that Sonic CD is hard to emulate though. Might’ve never crossed my mind

@@GoldenDryBonesandStu Yeah, it's like NiGHTS into Dreams in that it was coded so inseparably from the hardware that a straight port or emulation would be impossible. The 90s PC version was likely rebuilt in large places, but is still very faithful to the Mega CD release.

it’s nice to see another sonic cd and r fan, but you got some things wrong. (keep in mind i’m not trying to be rude, i’m just critiquing .) - gems collection did not include tails adventure and skypatrol for the first time, they were included in sadx first as unlockables. - 6:03 triple trouble 16-bit is not a replacement for the 8-bit version, it’s more of a reimagining than a remake. - 11:15 the pc version of sonic cd is an improvement over the sega cd version since it has better collision, not sure why that’s a bad thing. - 12:40 most fighting games do this. it’s very common to have it display the button from the arcade layout and not the button of the controller you are using (even the x360/ps3 port of stf does this)

"Left guessing what button does what" BROTHER the PUNCH button PUNCHES the KICK button KICKS the BARRIER button BARRIERS It's the EXACT control scheme from the early Virtua Fighters series, because it's made by the same team that worked in those games, it was designed to be brain dead easy to grasp. PLUS You can re-assign the button layout(!) You don't need to guess, you could just make your own. What a clown!

@@GoldenDryBonesandStu Really? Cause I hold a lot of the other games a lot of value as well. I can't find those games anywhere at all without finding an emulator and rom of the games themselves. So its still a gem of a collection to me. Plus its a great mark on the history of the series for its museum and other easter eggs

This was the game that actually kickstarted my Sonic journey, that's probably why Sonic CD is my favorite classic, despite me being fully aware that it's not the best. It just made my childhood playing through all these weird ass games and there is nothing else that will ever give me that same sense of discovery again. Also where my Tails' Skypatrol fans at??? 🔥

This is my favorite collection. Love Sonic R and Fighters. Also having a way to play Sonic CD back then was non existent. The other games were pointless. Its different from mega collection because it was to play other old games that didn't have. It actually makes sense why this exist. Def not useless.

I loved the gems collection, it was my first time playing sonic games like sonic r, sonic the fighters, and more, as well as seeing things like those cool artwork and such, and the music was peaceful, i really have good memories with this collection and really liked it 👌🏻

sonic mega collection is seriously why ive been into sonic for my whole life aka 16 years. this and my snes is what molded me into the person i am. Learning about anything sonic has seriously just been a fun hobby for me or literally ANYTHING retro. For sonic gems collection i definitely can see how it could've introduced peeps into sonic but like somebody else said, it feels like a odd cousin lol but if i grew up with this i think i still wouldve considered it pretty good

I get your point that it’s outdated but that could be said of a lot of Sonic collections that came out prior to most of these games being available for download. At the time it was amazing and for many of us it was our first opportunity to play R and CD plus you can unlock the Good endings of Sonic 1 thru Knuckles in gems collection so it’s a huge win for when it came out.

I think its hard to understand this if you weren't there but at the time this was released it wasn't as easy to get to Sonic CD, Sonic R, or Sonic the fighters. Sure, I had CD and Sonic R on PC but I could never get it to run properly because I was a dumb kid. When I got this collection I was so happy to finally play these games. This collection meant a lot to me as a kid. I understand you're coming from though.

The reason for the weird selection of Game Gear titles is because the Sonic Mega Collection Plus had the rest of them. Both are redundant though because all of them can be played on the Sonic Adventure DX Mini Game Collection, which you probably already had if you were interested in Gems Collection. Also, Gems Collection had the PC version of Sonic Cd because it had the higher-fidelity versions of the cutscenes.

As a kid I remember mostly just playing Sonic R on it. Sonic Fighters was hard to me as a kid and I didn't like Sonic CD and Game Gear games. It was my jam. Just having a silly fun time with really good soundtracks and unlocking characters.

the pc version of cd from 1996 only has the us soundtrack, even in the eu version despite the mega cd version using the jo ost

Personally I love that sonic gems collection aged a little poorly. It goes to show that these games keep improving! Soon we’ll be able to play as all characters (even Amy) in cd, and on top of that we’ll have all 12 game gear games in origins plus

You can also play Sonic the fighters in some of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon games in the games Arcade buildings alongside other old Sega arcade games like Virtual On or Virtua fighter.

Triple Trouble 16 bit makes unnecessary changes to the story, with the whole fake Knuckles thing, and is overall not faithful enough, so just like Sonic 3D Blast 2D or Sonic 2 8-bit remake by CreativeAraya (his first game remake isn't perfect but good enough to replace the original if needed) I recommend playing the original because the fan remake is worse.

Gems Collection has most of the games that Mega Collection has if you crack the code open externally. You can seriously use cheats to remove the time limits & play the full Museum unlock games. While yes Gems Collection is underwhelming these days, & should have offered more games like Sonic Eraser & Knuckles Chaotix. The featured games were once much harder to access & the Gamegear games let you make SaveStates. Also lets face it would any of us have ever played Vectorman if it wasn't on Gems Collection?

Mega Collection was such a full package. Gems Collection felt like the odd cousin. CD is the highlight, but it doesn't rank up with 2 or 3&K I feel. I had fun with R admittedly, but Mean Bean and Flicky were good side attractions all the same.

I do find it strange that this only got a gamecube release in America. Which might have contributed to it being less talked about there. It's a shame a number of games were intended to be put into the collection. But due to outside factors it didn't make it in

This take feels in bad faith in my opinion like if every game can just be emulated or have a better version. Then wouldn’t that make mega collection irrelevant? Also Sonic R, Sonic CD,and Sonic the Fighters (or Sonic Championship if you’re weird) are very notable for being hard to emulate. Also I don’t know if you played Sonic TT 16-bit but there are many inaccuracies with the story. Also lets be honest Tails Sky Patrol and Tails Adventure are game that never get rereleased and sonic origins does nothing to fix these doesn’t even give them wide screen support.

Sonic r is the best game in the series you just have realistic expectations and good opinions. Sonic r has bad controls and terrible character balancing and I LOVE IT. All jokes aside keep up the good work and keep making great videos. Also, Sonic r is actually my favorite game in the sonic series. Don't question why.

My take, sonic gems is basically the S&K lock-on for mega collection. Overall worse than mega collection, but they combine into a fuller experience. Both are still worth it, imo, even if they are both getting slowly outmoded. Also I appreciate your gripes with sonic cd in gems collection, especially when you didn't mention the absurd input lag of mega collection lol. (Plus notwithstanding, cause I never got to play that.) But looking through nostalga-vision, I didn't know what a "wide screen" meant back then, and I didn't know there was another soundtrack. But here I am, nitpicking your nitpicks. Good vid overall.

I have Sonic Gems Collection on my PS2 and it has the cut games, all of the SoR titles and Bonanza Bros, but the game is in standard english, and the soundtrack of Sonic CD is the American one

That's weird, since the PS2 version (which I already said was JP and PAL exclusive) was never released in the US. So it only makes sense that it includes the JP soundtrack.
