My late mother used to sing this to me when I was little!…I decided to Google the lyrics because it lives rent free in my head.…I had no idea this was a real song. The nostalgia is priceless! ❤️😭🙌🏽
I too have lost my mother and like you she would sing this song to me. Where ever we lived she would call the local radio station and request it to be played for me on my birthday. Sadly radio stations stopped playing this song in the eigthies. I own the song now that I purchased the 3 CD Irish Rovers set. Glad you know it's a real song and I hope you enjoyed hearing it. Happy St. Patrick's Day.
Play this song for my children and now my grandchildren I love it and we bought a book about Noah and the Ark and my kids just think this is great and they truly believe that's why there's no unicorns because they were playing
Older sister sisters friends dad plays this song so I looked it up and when ever I play Minecraft with my older cousin I sing it too them and they love it we sing it so much!
Marie ,,,, hi there an ditto , yes my late mother used to love this song 🎵 and sing it , it brings back memories ,loving memories of great times ,gone bye ,
Thank you very much for posting this video. I have an elderly parent with dementia who got so much joy out of being able to sing along to this song and other Irish songs that had lyrics large enough to read and follow along ....this music brought her back to life and made her very very happy as well as the family
My Mum had Alzheimer’s & we used to play this song for her. She couldn’t speak any longer, but would always sing (with her words too) this chorus perfectly...xx My heart soars when I hear this beloved tune.
Yep. The segments were called "Ark in the Park" with Dr. Lester Fisher. I watched the "Ray Rayner and His Friends" show every morning while getting ready for school. Ray Rayner had a huge impact on local Chicago television.
@@Lashly273 You are correct!! The sandman said a song would help get the kids to sleep!! So adorable. My daughter is a mom now and I plan to play this for the grandkids!!
I was obsessed with unicorns when I was little but whenever I heard this song I'd burst out crying. When they were gone...they were crying....it made me so sad.
Such a cheesy little song, but it'll bring tears to your eyes every time especially if you have fond family memories associated with it. Very magical for a little kid and for an adult as long as they don't forget the feeling they got from it as a child.
I only know this song from my sisters friend dad who plays this song in the car all the time and I beg them to play it alog I love and I have to sing it I love it so much it's the national anthem for my minecraft world
So lovely reading all of these comments. My grandma has dementia and has to be in assisted living now, but when I was little she would pick me up from school, and she would always put this song on in the car. If we got home before it was over, she would drive in circles at the end of the culdesac until it was done so we didn't have to end it early.
I remember a guitarist that would play this at the local pub that we used to go to and all of us, back in the 90's, would sing with him. But we would emulate the movements of the animals with our arms. Good times and innocent hilarious fun!
I love this song! I used to work at an Irish Pub and we had a band that came in and sang this song. The whole restaurant would dance, it was so adorable and wholesome every time.
This is a poem by Shel Silverstein! I love it! I used to hear this song at the pizza place in town as a child and I loved it then just as much as I love it now!
Son of a bitch, you're right!! And this was spoonfed to us as authentic Irish folklore, by adults who would have despised Shel, for why we liked him. Freaking at The Freaker's Ball. Ya'll.
@@KairuHakubi, read what I said! They were trying to pass this off as Irish, when it's as Irish as a bagel! What you're saying is like you should be honored that your car was stolen, by a thief who liked it!
@@markcollins2666 uh huh. If my car gets stolen, I can't drive it anymore. These guys paid shel silverstein for his lyrics, and put music to them. That's like adding an engine to your car for you.
@@KairuHakubi Shel recorded this song 1962, well before The Irish Rovers. I can't hear that it is any new music, although they made it sound more Irish. (I hope Shel got paid for their use of his song.)
My grandparents use to play this song for my mom when she was a kid. Then she played it forbme and now my kids love this song and puff the magic dragon as well!
I noticed that the other day and back to you on they were going to be a while before I can get to the moon and back to you on that one and the other one is my favorite color is blue and back to you on that one and the other one is my favorite color is blue and gold banquet and back to you on that one and the other one is my favorite
BOTH of these songs are GREAT - there's also "Pierre", a song about a BOY who'd say nearly NOTHING but "I don't CARE!" - LAST time he spoke, he was heard saying, "YES, indeed, I CARE!" (the SONG, if I'm NOT mistaken, was sung by Olivia Newton--John).
Just played this song for my granddaughter who was coloring a picture of a Uniciorn. I haven't heard this song in years but it still brings a smile to my face and great sounds to my ears. my 65 year old mind thought it was Burl Ives but then thanks to RU-vid identified the truth...Thank you Irish Rovers...
I remember The Bachelors singing this one back in the 60s. I loved it then and I still love it today and this version is just as good. Thanks for posting, VenomousNewfie!
Thank you for posting this! I had the 45 record back in 1971, when I was 7, and I loved it. We moved around a lot, and in 1979 when we moved again my mother made me give away all most everything I owned saying I had out grown it and couldn't save things for my own children someday. This record went, along with some Beatles, and every record I had from the 60's and early 70's, along with my Dennis the Menace record player. My late husband could play “Name That Tune” with every song in our lifetime, but he said he had never heard of The Unicorn Song. I never thought I'd hear this again. Thank you so much for the memories. God Bless you. Does anyone remember what was on the “B” side of the 45?
If it helps, I heard this song when a neighbor was moving and gave our family lots of toys, games, and a record player with 45s. This was my favorite, and a blessing to our entire family. My kids learned it too. So maybe it was sort of like the butterfly effect. Thank you
@@KTFinancial Hi, Thank you. You brought tears to my eyes. I hope the people that got my hand me downs appreciated them too. God bless you and your family. Take care, and stay safe. ☺️ ✌️ 🖖 😷
Can't say I remember solely for being born MUCH later, however, Wikipedia reckons that 'Black Velvet Band' was on most 45RPM releases; only UK and Ireland to have 'The Rattling Bog.' Link to the B-side, best quality I could find: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N9m7DsemnDc.html&ab_channel=TheIrishRovers-Topic Hope that's good help, that it's worth a listen, even to come rather late. Best wishes!
@@Didgeinator92 Hi! Thank you! I listened to it, although it's lovely I honestly don't remember it. I know I played the heck out of the A side, for the life of me I cannot remember the B side song. That might have been the B side of my record I just don't remember. But hey it has been 50 years ago. Thank you so much for your help. It is greatly appreciated. May you have a blessed day, and life. Take care, stay safe, have a nice day. 👵🙂✌️☮️🖖 😷 🙉🙈🙊 ♥️🦄🎶
My dad used to sing this to my sister and us every night. He even made up a dance to go with it. At my sister’s wedding, she and our dad danced their father-daughter dance to this song, doing the dance we used to do. It was one of the most beautiful things we’d ever seen. Then her husband’s chosen song to dance with his mother was the Chicken Dance.
We used to have their record, The Unicorn, when I was little, I would drive my sister crazy playing it over and over when she wanted to play her cds. I just found this song and was still able to sing it after not hearing it in at least 7 years. Great song sung by a great band.
My Grandma used to play this song for me on her record player. If I remember correctly, the record itself was thick..and heavy. And yes, I am old enough to remember records, and 8 tracks lol thank you for posting this song with the lyrics. I
I just heard this song on my flash drive I have for my truck and on this drive I have classic rock old country some of those golden oldies, Now I was 5 years old when this song was made and never heard till a couple weeks ago and I am now 60 years old and every time I hear this song right there where Noah tells God he didn't see no Unicorn tears roll down my face!! Damn Getting Old Sucks!! hahahahahaha
I had run away from a group home at 14 and the kid i ran away with sang this while we were laying on a ballfield and i was teaching him about the constellations and the storys behind them. Awesome memory
You might think this is the ending to the song, But I have to tell you, in fact, that's where you're wrong. Those unicorns are magical, 'cause when the rain started pourin', They grew themselves some wings and they took a'soarin'. There are green alligators and long-necked geese, Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees. But if you're lookin' for the unicorn, don't be forlorn. It's second star to the right and straight on until morn.
Or: You might think this is the ending to the song, But I have to tell you, that's where you're wrong. Those unicorns are magical, 'cause when the rain started lashin', They grew themselves some flippers and they started a splashin' There are green alligators and long necked geese, Some humpty back camels and some chimpanzees. But if you're lookin' for a unicorn, well listen to me. The place you need to search is the deep blue sea.
I remember as a wee lad watching the Irish Rovers. It was on just before In Search Of. I really miss having quality programs such as that now. I remember when one of the members died from a heart attack. I cried like I lost a dear friend.
This song I remember around 40 years ago, when my mother, sister, and I were living in the SAME city as my grandmother (Vermillion, South Dakota) Animals: Alligators (Long-Necked) Geese Camels Chimpanzees Cats Rats Elephants Unicorn (was the SILLIEST of the animals!) The lyrics were AWESOME! FLIP side: Whiskey on a Sunday (The Puppet Song)
That's exactly why I just looked this up! It was in my head, and it's been bothering me because I couldn't remember which show I remembered it from. Thx!
My grandad was a veterinarian and a friend of Lester fisher from the Lincoln Park Zoo. Always said nice things about him, and my grandfather seldom did that. He like horses and dogs a lot more than people.
My mom loved playing this for my eldest nephew when he was a baby, always helped sooth him and helped him sleep. She just passed this fall from A.L.S and it brought quite a few of her fav songs to mind, including this one she would only ever play for him.
Every year my mother would play this song for me on my birthday. Oh how I miss her, but I can play this song and remember those happy days. Erin Go Bragh/Ireland Forever. Happy St. Patrick's Day. May the wind be always at your back and my you be in Heaven half an hour before the devil knows your dead. An old Irish blessing.
There used to be a kid's show in Chicago - "Ranger Rick & Garfield Goose" - that played this as its opening song. I watched that show every morning from age 4 to 6.
I remember this tune from 40+ years ago. Everytime I had to say the word "green", this went through my head. Not to mention I didn't remember it was about Noah and that I was singing it wrong all these years. Thanks for posting the lyrics!
I just bought this song on a 45 at a thrift store and I got so happy when I saw it and shouted. All the people around me gave me a funny look but I don't care. Finding it was almost as rare as seeing a unicorn
thank-you for making this it brings back lots of found memories watching the Irish Rovers with my grandpa this was always my favorite song that they'd sing I'm putting this into my favorites list and sharing it with my facebook friends I thought I'd never hear this again so again thank-you so much :-)
I looked this up because all of my life as I heard this song, I never new what they were saying after 'long neck geese'!!! Now I finally know. It's Humpty back camels! :) I would have gone to my grave never knowing.
My second grade teacher Ms. Greathouse would play this around St. Patty's day and invite her friends Bill & Patty to the class. They performed this for us everytime. Ugh how I miss second grade!
For some reason this song stayed in my head all so I had to Google it and there it was, as a black kid growing up in the early 60s we only had one radio station WTIX in New Orleans I would sing along and imagine those animals 😊
I remember this playing at a friends house when I was a little girl. There father was in a band and has just passed away which me look it up and remember them jumping and singing along to the lyrics, and then doing it all again !!!
My nana got me a music box that played this song, when i played it, a soft chime of this song played and I remembered it from somewhere, like some sort of strange deja vu. After listening to this, it's pretty nostalgic.
Lovely song, brings back so many memories, thanks for posting. What brought me here? Watching Mrs Brown's Boys on TV last night, and Mrs B sings a few lines from the song. But hey, it's an all-Irish affair ...! Bravo, Rovers ...
My grandpa used to play this song on his guitar for me as a kid, which was super lovely of him, but I would just cry about the unicorns. I felt so bad for them.
Shared this lovely song with my 3-8 students. All smiles, some of them danced and sang along. My goodness, it's stuck in my head! And yes .. Unicorns are real. Just ask one. :)
@@mrlct2259 @MrLCT ROBLOX, i think Alice cat was referring to the time of day that the Noah was leaving. The unicorns thought Noah was leaving at five o'clock, not four thirty. So apparently we could add not being on time as one of the unicorn's shortcomings.
@@mrlct2259 i think that whole r/whoosh thing is called for here. and i now even know what it means. This songs brings back such memories ... my brother sisiter and I use to listen to this song for hours!! My parents even showed us the dance to it.. lol
they played this on a pirate radiio station for like a week leading up to the offcial radio station, everyone in my little town was listening to it. it was awesome, i love this song!
Brings back memories of when I was a kid and sunday night we watched the Irish Rovers, and they always sang this song at the end....and yes of course the whole family sang along! LOL
My grandpa would listen to this all the time, we always thought it so annoying until he passed, and when it played at his funeral I was never so happy to hear that song before in my life. Rest In Peace grandpa
