The Unique Beauty of Yorkshire Dales Inspires Its Divine Nickname 

Summary: "Welcome to the Shire."

We drove through a large portion of the Dales in 2015 from York on the way to reach Keswick in the Lake District. Amazing country! We stopped in Hawes for a quick lunch and coffee/tea. I could spend a week there no problem.

Everybody's are going to London in my place of work. But, I wanted to visit Yorkshire England. I just don't know which airport I have to go. Which place I have to start my 20 days adventure. I'm coming from Alberta Canada. Pls have some great advices.

It's probably a pretty place according to city dwellers used to roads and concrete buildings, but would be better if the trees had been retained 200 years ago to prevent soil erosion. And over grazing of the pasture adds to the damage. Other farmland in the UK has been better managed by retaining trees and controlling stocking rates, by having fewer hard footed animals per acre. Too late now of course, the damage is done. But land rehabilitation is possible, as has been demonstrated in many drought affected areas of Australia, by reducing livestock and replanting native trees that are hardy in dry climates.

It's barren apart from sheep and on the hunting estaes deer and grouse,. As with much of the uplands in the UK it needs to be re forrested for wildlife and for water perculation to prevent flooding further down river; also oxygen production, and carbon dioxide sequestion. Tomy eyes this is far from beautiful it is a type of manmade dessert. The irony is we pay subsidies via the EU to keep it like this.

Pfft. Nothing compared to North American land beauty.
