I recently had the honor of interviewing Cory Stevens. He is a pioneer in beekeeping industry particularly when it come to breeding mite resistant bees. Most of the discussion centered around his breeding program but he took a few minutes to explain his method of queen introduction. I pulled this short clip from the full length video. Hope you enjoy it. I think I am going to give this method a try.
Here is the link to the original video with Cory. Interesting stuff!

I'm a Cory fan! I got twenty of his virgins last spring and had a 100 percent take with his introduction procedure! It works! Y'all keep up the good work and I will be seeing ya at the expo!

Cory is doing an important work. I am also impressed with Ashby Miller in North Carolina. Also working on developing a better bee. It is nice to know so many wonderful people in the beekeeping world. Of course I am a fan of what Greg Burns is doing up at Nature’s Image Farm. As well as many others. Thanks for checking in and for your support!

This is exactly the way Lawrence at Black Mountain Honey introduces mated queens. Its good to know this works for virgins as well.

Heard Cory talk about this in NC this Spring, it was like a calf at a new gate at first, but it makes sense when you think about it. Thanks for putting this on and hope to get my hands on some of those Stevens Bee Co cells next year.

I took 9 virgins from Cory in Spring 2022, introduced them into queenless nucs the way he suggests and had 100% return mated. Granted, it was an exception to go 100%, but the key here isn't how nice the mating yard is - it's that the method worked in 100% of the nucs, as each one accepted the virgins as he recommended.

Black Mountain Honey in Wales does something similar. Make the split and introduce a mated queen but does not open the sugar plug. Return seven days later, knock down the queen cells and open the sugar to allow introduction in a few days. Seems to work very well for him.

I'm in an area that feral population is majority africanized so I have to use mated queens. I always dispatch the queen prior to receiving mated and go through the entire box days later and remove all queen cells leaving the hopelessly queenless and use JZBZ for slow release. This works 99% of the time and does not take long to shake off the brood box. If the hive is aggressive I use a screen board to separate nurse bees and they more easily accept new queens.

We're not ready for splitting yet here I Ohio, but we're working on getting everything lined up. We have 4 queens coming from Cory. I'm going to work on implementing the VSH strategy to our yards.

Great information Bruce. I had a really hot hive last spring that I needed to requeen so I found her and removed her. I waited 5 days and purchased a local mated queen, took out all the queen cells and introduced the queen in her cage and it worked like a charm. I usually just introduced the next day and that has worked but not every time? I think I will use plan a for now on and wait and remove the cells. Good luck with your bees.

Think of the state they are in to make queen cells. So it would make sense for the state to be similar when virgin queen hatches!

I use that same method introducing mated Russian queens to italian hives - discovered via trial & error. He's 100% right the bees will take good care of the queen and convince you everything's gonna be ok then you come back in to check and she's dead or nowhere to be found I lost a few until I started making all of them hopelessly queenless & cutting down cells on day 7. Since making that change my take has been 100%

Great video -so you are capping both ends of virgin cage and putting that in split ..wait a week then tear down cells and open up candy end -right?
@brucesbees
@brucesbees Год назад
I think that is what he is saying but I may try to break out the splits a week before getting the queens and then introduce in a cage with candy. I will be sure to clarify with Cory before his queens are shipped to me.

I have one curiosity to ask, if it's true that the bees prefer to make theyr own queens and that the acceptance goes almost to 100% when they have no alternatives, it would be intresting to know the percentage of supersedures eventually occurred in Cory's tests. Anyway great advices, i will surely try his method for virgin queens.

This may be a silly question but I haven't seen it asked. Is it OK to mark a virgin queen before introducing her in her cage? Then once eggs begin appearing I could be sure it's the introduced queen and that I didn't miss a queen cell. Does that make any sense?
@brucesbees
@brucesbees 11 месяцев назад
I think it is ok. I have never don’t it myself though. I usually wait until they are mated. But that is a great question.

Did Cory say you could make your split above a queen excluder a week out with queen in bottom? Would that not make sure after 7-9 days the split you take above the excluder would have no queens cells and be essentially "hopelessly queen less"? Then, you can pop the virgin queen in without having to worry about plucking queen cells.
@ThatBeeMan
@ThatBeeMan Год назад
You are correct. Leave that brood above the QE for that period of time and the brood has then "timed out" as I like to say. The brood will then be too old to be used for cells. Take that split off and introduce your virgin. In my operation, I allow at least 24 hours queenless before introducing a virgin BUT, I am direct releasing the virgin, not candy cage method.
@brucesbees
@brucesbees Год назад
Yes I think this is the idea but I would think it’s a good idea to check and makes sure no cells.
@jeffbrooks6491

@@ThatBeeMan Thanks. I’m used to doing my splits above a double screen board, anyways. Seems natural for me to take the split this way after 7-9 days when introducing a virgin

@@brucesbees My queen acceptance doing a split above a double screen are so much higher than anything else I have done in terms of splitting techniques.

Curious, why would anyone take issue or think that this method would not be a viable alternative? I see the point from commercial keepers and adding additional work to go back and remove cells but from a small scale or hobbyist, what’s the issue?
@brucesbees

I agree. Makes perfect sense to me.

I shake sugar on the frames I make splits with. Sugar gets into the cells of open brood and kills them. Hopelessly queen lees in the same step.

Anything that makes introducing queens less effort intensive is worth a try. Typically, I do my split, run a pick up queens, and rush to get them in the next day. It's hectic and I don't always keep to my timeline. When that happens, dead introduced queen and queen cells. This does seem much simpler and less hectic
