@Lex The ACTIONS and ATTITUDES were the REASON for this song having been written. The lyrics reminded people who turned a blind or failed to see the horror and inhumanity of lynching culture towards the black citizens. The "powers that be" only worried that not only the black citizens but others would take action against the racist system and disturb the sick normality of hunting, burning, castrating, r@p!ng, beating, false imprisonment, lynching and everything else that's goes with systematic racism if the song was performed regularly. It has NOTHING to do with what KIDS allegedly listen to NOW. Strange Fruit lyrics are sobering and still need to be heard as the knee jerk response to acknowledging and remembering slavery, Jim Crow and the LONG REACHING affects of it on this country is "GET OVER IT".
@@JoopSloot Tell you the beginning of Lady Day story like I said before watch the one with Diana Ross and the one with Andra Day is playing ending of Ms. Billie Holiday story
“...she’s made something of herself and you can’t take it....because she’s strong, beautiful, and black.” powerful and true words, and i look forward to learning more through this film, and seeing Andra Day accepting her Oscar.
The Feds ruined her. On purpose. It's a terribly tragic story, and I hope that this movie tells all of it, so people will know what heartless sadists those Feds were, who forced that truth-telling queen off the stage and into a tragic, early death.
This is going to be another great black biopic. She fully embodies Lady Day. From the way she talks to the way she sings "Strange Fruit". A lot of us (African-Americans) need this movie right now. We need to know more about our past icons.
@@suzygirl1843 Well, name any biopic where they haven't twisted the story. All biopics are fiction and myth. This looks like a great story to tell about Billie Holliday, though. Maybe one that finally honours her properly. (Diana Ross and Richard Pryor did some great work in 'Lady Sings The Blues', but it was the tragic-hopeless-drug-addict version of the story, and Ross is a radically different singer.) Fingers crossed!
@@suzygirl1843 Totally fair. You're right. The Zoe Saldana thing was a slap in the face to a genius, and of course it was horrible colourism. There are so many actors in the world who would have been much more suited to the role. I have some hopes about this one. This feels like a story about Billie Holliday that needs to be told. Especially right now.
@@suzygirl1843 I don't know enough about these moviemakers to know if that's fair. Is it a bunch of white film-makers? If so, then I understand you being suspicious. But this might also be a story that really NEEDS to be told, especially right now. It all depends on who has control of this production.
@@lanietalk ah who cares. Billie Eilish is a fine musician but she aint no Billie Holiday, so I am sure time passes on and you know ::) -- plus, just add a middle name that kinda sets the record straight like ... i dont know - not Jean tho :D
This movie has been 5 years in the making and finally on time! Now we can see what the Diana Ross part in “Lady Sings The Blues” never showed us....Billie Holiday’s political side!
I truly loved Diana Ross in "Lady Sings the Blues" but you're absolutely right - the film focused on the personal and professional sides but not the political.
You cannot compare both movies. The Diana Ross movie was filmed almost 50 years ago. It was a big deal to make a big budget movie with black stars in the lead roles. Times were very different and that movie was ground breaking in its own way and in its own time.
I saw Andra Day, the actress who played Nicky in oitnb, I saw Miss Lawrence, and I saw the guy who played Chris in everybody hates chris and Lee Daniels name. I'm watching this, I already have a Hulu subscription. I'm ready.
I still hear Billie on the radio every day, on the swing and jazz stations, same as I did back in the 1950s when I was a kid. Her voice and artistry never fail to thrill me. I think she's the most awesome voice of the 20th century.
Diana Ross was outstanding in lady sings the blues and should have won that Oscar ! so maybe this time they will give the 0scar to Andra Day for best actress
My mama taught me the same thing. To always always have a separate account that is mine and mine alone and to make sure I have two months rent in there at all times.
Your mum was wrong sorry🙏🏽🙏🏽 How ever her choice in man should ov bin the teaching🙏🏽🙏🏽 nothing is separate in marriage as long as you invested in the right person
Lady Sings The Blues , was amazing just in the fact that it was made at all!!!! Remember it was 1972, and it showed addiction in a way that had never been shown before. A full scale African American production. We must respect that film for making it possible to make this film.
If Jennifer Hudson and Andra Day are both nominated thats gonna be tough...in 1973 Diana Ross and Cicely Tyson were both nominated that year..Tyson 4 Sounder and Ross 4 Lady Sings The Blues.. They were beat out by Liza Minnelli 4 Cabarert..
Goddamn it it’s about time they gave young black actors the stage for their turn to shine . Now don’t get me wrong I love seeing older , more known black actors but praise be the lord for putting smile on my lockdowned face . 🤣
this woman's voice - shit felt so light and airy like a comforting little cloud just lightly hovering over the audience - my god there will never be another....she deserved so much better! a long life with a whole lotta fucken respect! kmt damn this world
Babbbbbby!!! You damn right I’m watching this with my girls!! Teach our babies the reality of of strength and influence to change this fuxked up world!!!!! I love Billie Holiday amongst the others she was a Queen before her time however she still reigns!!! What a joy! Thank you! 💖
@Mr. CHARLIE - With your comment 'you' exposed yourself & removed any doubt that you are an azz. Ignorance such as yours is why both women, and people of color are still fighting for respect and the right to exist without being harassed. But I don't expect you to understand that.
When he said she's got something you can't take away from her because she's strong beautiful and black I almost started to cry because it's true she was such a beautiful black woman but had a really difficult life and you could hear the pain and sorrow in her voice when she sang.
I've been a Billie Holiday STAN for years (I have a portrait tattoo of her on my forearm) and I've been waiting so long for a movie that's worthy of her. I'm SO SO excited to see this!
This film was outstanding it focused mainly ON HER CAREER, its twists and turns and not just attributions of her private life. The insinuations were enough for adults to understand the references and kept the film with continuity about what she OFFERED to the world, HER VOICE & TENACITY. Thank you Lee Daniel's for presenting a film where sexuality was not the focus, and you gave us an EXCEPTIONAL VIEW of the life and forced upon tragedy of The Great Lady Day. Adra Day was the most perfect choice EVER!!!! P.S. Stay this course, the film was exceptional and exquisitely tasteful.
Just read this amazing book about the war on drugs and was devasted that as I’m not American that was the first I heard of Billie holiday, she had such a difficult childhood and can’t wait to see her story unfold on screen
Had to comment on this. So I just saw this last night and boy I might say it was the best. Billy was before my time but I love love her music. I am so proud that she fought in what she believed in. Her childhood was a bit dark and I cried but but she made it. But even in spite of her being judge all the time with her issues, (and we all have issues) she is SUPERSTAR in my eyes and a beautiful INSPIRATION to me and I am sure to many other people/women in our world. May her music live forever.
That picture of her in the grey pin stripe suit and the piece of hair on the top of her head I seen before the vocals is killing it I can't wait till the sound track is released
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lam so here for that , l haven't felt chills for a movie like this since well....Lady Sings the Blues, I was a kid w/that movie premiered and l KNEW it would change my life and it did ...i feel the exact same way about this one. Ms.Andrea O'Day has willed this opportunity for herself since she came onto the scene, when l saw her and herd her sound l instantly thought BILLIE HOLIDAY !!!
Congratulations Andra Day on your Golden Globe nomination! First a Golden Globe, next will be an Oscar! I can’t wait to see this movie! Andra sings and talks like Billie Holiday!
30 days out of high school & living on my own I discovered and old LP at a thrift store....Billie Holiday. 75 cents. I didn't know who she was, but fell in love with her face. Then her music. God Bless the Child and more. Her voice and her phrasing, I was again in love. Strange fruit, yeah I was so young I wasn't able to connect the dots. Years later, I did. Stunning! What an unmatched talent.
I thought I saw Eartha Kitts face b4 I read the caption but I will absolutely watch Billy Holliday with my kids! While she was on the stand 4 questioning, I hope she sang parts of her song in response! U won’t stop that song or her generational impact!
Such a remarkable artist beautiful soul and amazing voice...... I remember my grandmother putting her music on to cook....what a classic beauty 😍 Billy Holiday was a individual who strive to make it at such a young age had it ruff growing up and died way to soon at age 44.....rest ez beautiful your music will live on
Her story needs to be HEARD!!! She was more than an entertainer she was LOUD when our ppl needed a voice. She was COURAGEOUS when others wanted her to be timid. She was BOLD, BLACK AND BEAUTIFUL!!! Can't wait to watch this movie.
I have 2see this, 🎵📻when I was young use to listen to🎵🎵 Billie a lot, I still do ❣️❣️now&then.... My mother & Father actually saw her live, not long b4 she died .....somewhere on the east coast. ✝️🥀🥀🥀🥀✝️🥀💮💮💮💮💮✝️💮💮💮💮💮 🦋🕊️🦋🕊️🦋🕊️🦋🕊️
Oh you had me @ Lee Daniels. I will be watching this film. Idk who the actress is playing Billie, but I look forward to seeing more of her in this film.
I can't wait to see this movie...I love Billie Holiday and listen to her as a young 16 year old not really understanding the words, but knew in my young head her music seemed sad to me.
..I agree and mine too..I have The Soundtrack on Vynal, Cassette and Cd...Thats how much I love this Movie...Im glad a new Generation..is gonna see this tho.
I still remember the first time I heard Andra Day, she was just starting then with her recently released debut album Cheers to the Fall. Then the next thing I know she was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards and winning one at the Golden Globes. Her acting performance is so organic. I hope she does more acting gig! We rarely see raw, organic acting now.
I cant wait 4 this to come out...Great time to show it too...I like the fact that its a different telling of Billie story..The stuff that the 1972 Film LADY SINGS THE BLUES couldn't even touch....Its time now...
@@gaden74 - And...pretty much that. Also, in the replies a lot of other people have noticed her resemblance to Eartha Kitt and are hoping for biopic about her. So she's not alone.
