It's probably because he doesn't peddle 'pop zen'. You have to kind of be past that point to appreciate Brad's take. I know a lot of people that want magic powers, everlasting bliss, etc. I usually don't send those people here, and the times that I do they have not been interested.

@@lorenacharlotte8383 Full disclosure, on an egoic level, that's often how I feel about it. Like " Wow I'm at a higher level than you.", but once I'm aware of that and can try and process past it, it's not about being at a higher level. It's just the way that we often find ourselves on this path is because we want something out of it. We want that new shiny thing called enlightenment that's finally going to make us happy. A lot of teachers imply that they're offering just that, or we perceive that that's what they're offering so we buy in. Brad doesn't really say that, and in some ways he openly denies it. That just puts some people off that still have a lot of illusions about what they're going to get out of this kind of work. In my experience anyways.

Happy Birthday Brad 😉!. The book “Understanding Our Mind” by Thich Nhat Hanh was written mainly for Professionals In Psychology, Therapist and alike in the caring field. The Master used to have a very specific retreat just for them. According to the sharing by many of those type of Professionals Thich Nhat Hanh input over those retreats was extremely valuable. He basically wrote the book for them as a guide to remember. All good Zen Buddhist Masters teach accordingly to the audience needs. I’m not into any of the Professions mentioned about, nonetheless I’ve got that book as recommended homework to bring back home during a retreat and signed with the blessing of TNH. I remember to complain because I thought it was too difficult for me to understand but since each chapter started with a key poem I like it better. It’s not an easy book. You won’t able to understand it as a plane reading . Only if you were familiar with the TNH language used, style teaching practices and retreats then you would be able to see and appreciate the book. I have also some difficulties to understand some of the Japanese Zen Writings. It’s natural. I was always told to keep an open mind and to listen always very deeply beyond the lyrics.

@@HardcoreZen : Yes the plane didn’t fly plain in the rain ☺️. I can read and understand now that book. It’s a really good book. But it might not do for you as it goes in similar lines as the Yocachara you recommended. The kind of language expression used by TNH is a bit childlike. Some of the activities during retreats are also a bit childlike like going back to the kindergarten. One day an Scholar asked him what was his teaching about and he answered back that he only teach breathing.

@@lorenacharlotte8383 As far as explanations of Yogacara Buddhism go, Understanding Our Mind is one of the clearest to understand. The verses are his own version of Vasubandhu's works Twenty Verses on Mind Only and Thirty Verses on Mind Only written in the fifth century, which are fundamental texts in the Yogacara school. This is what the 'key poems' at the beginning of each chapter are.
@lorenacharlotte8383
@lorenacharlotte8383 3 года назад
@@zenaudio108 : Well, to me absolutely Thich Nhat Hanh is always the best in clarity, depth, simplicity and remarkable skill transmitting directly to the non intelectual reality in all of us. Wouldn’t know how to explain it. However, not everybody has that kind of such a direct connection and because of that they can only see the flowery, simplistic, repetitive and very quickly brings boredom. In one of my last retreats with him and all the rest of participants, he told us not to publish all retreat dharma sessions because in order to get those teachings people needed to be with us receiving the dharma brought into practice straight away in order to be truly understood through oneself practice living experience. And he being able to correct any misinterpretations, answering any question... Having said all that, Brad was educated and trained in Japan in the Soto tradition. His Teacher Nishijima was also a very good Teacher in his own Soto tradition. In essence all teach the same. But the Scholar area comes in a different format and because of that it can be sometimes difficult to understand the lyirics from the tradition one was not trained into. In fact, found Brad very helpful through by his own personal experience and quotations by Soto great Masters in his videos. The Soto is a great tradition too. So Brad doesn’t need to go for the reading and study of that book because he has not had any connection with the book. He had a better connection with Yogachara book wrote by a Japanese.

I read that Thich Nhat Hanh book a little while ago when I was working with Ben Connelly’s book on Yogacara. Plus, I’m at a loss on the Japanese you referenced. I’m of the mind that the universe arises and dies every second. With that notion, with each being arising and eventually passing away, the universe of that moment exists through that being’s life and ceases to be with that being’s passing. Maybe, I’m way too far out on a limb here but maybe it could be likened to each intersection of Indra’s Net arising and subsiding with each being thus being a point of which the Universe constantly changes, evolves, and dies. I think I need some coffee now.

You want MORE scholarly books? I struggle with Katagiri :)) By that I mean I make resumes of the dharma books I read, so I can retain something. I used to read a lot, but then I noticed I forget a lot, so what use was the reading? So now I take notes. And even Katagiri can be difficult to compact down to the essential ideas and put into my own words.

I think this means that it's the only real perspective that YOU can ever have - you are none of the people that came before you and you will never be any of the people that come after, so it makes sense to say that the universe is born and dies when you do, because it does .... From your perspective.

"The Heart Sutra "OH SARIPUTRA, THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VOIDNESS OF All DHARMAS ARE NON-ARISING, NON-CEASING, NON-DEFILED, NON-PURE, NON-INCREASING, NON-DECREASING." The above paragraph proclaims Emptiness as the substance of all dharmas: That being the case, there can be neither birth nor death; no defilement; no purity; no increase or decrease. What holds true for the Dharma of Skandha applies equally to the rest of dharmas, and therefore all dharmas are presently void."

The way I interpret this is that we all have our own Universe simulation going in our minds built on sense impressions we've received & thoughts we've had. We don't actually perceive Reality as it is: "things in themselves" (as western philosophers put it) or "Thusness" (as eastern philosophers do). This simulation is recreated by our minds every moment. When we were born, this Universe was born with us & when we die, it dies with us. This simulation is the only Universe we can know unless we theoretically become a Buddha & can perceive Reality as-is (Thusness). Let's tie this into the primary goal of Buddhism: escape from suffering & look at what the Buddha (supposedly) said. You can see a reflection of this concept in the very 1st 2 lines of the Dhammapada. Since your mind creates your Universe (simulation), the quality of your mind at that moment will determine your level or suffering or happiness: 1. Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with an impure mind a person speaks or acts suffering follows him like the wheel that follows the foot of the ox. 2. Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with a pure mind a person speaks or acts happiness follows him like his never-departing shadow.
@mbettinar
@mbettinar 3 года назад
In your opinion, wouldn't the thusness be the perception and sensation, the "simulation" itself? Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like you are dividing reality and experience into separate categories. As if there's our "simulation" on the one hand and then there's "reality" on the other. What is the simulation but reality itself? How can reality and the simulation be separate? Isn't it reality that's "doing" the simulation? You wrote a great comment and made me curious as to what you think about this.

@@HardcoreZen Here's my best guess: "Thus a person being born and seeing the universe, it does not appear to this person that having come out in birth, they have been added on to a universe which existed during the period before they were born." from a solipsist point of view we are not born at all,. rather we develop existence as memory and intelligence crystallise and neither do we die, memory decoheres, often quite dramatically the relationship between existential intelligence and age is rather complex, in some respects peaking about five and in other respects peaking much later, right up to death you just cannot make sense of this stuff, though you can argue that the world is a process of being brought into existence by your development and given the role of memory, you can see the prevalent "being in the moment" meme is unadulterated crap this indian philosophic "simultaneous arising" is the usual off target madness of trying to lim infinitely receding perspectives, do you see that japanese writing of dogen you couldn't understand brad is actually the process, which is why translation doesn't "get" what dogen is about, its like they are taking snapshots, rather than being able to repeat the dynamic process that is the actually of what dogen is saying, ie it is both the description and the process eihei dogen is basically inaccessible to us because of the lost "philology", instead we are treated to the bizarre and perverse spectacle of idiots reconstructing nonsense pretending there's something to it, but its just crasziness followed by the craszy sawaki, nishijima, katakgiri are just these craszies, morrons caught in bad fiction
