Star Citizen wants to be more than just a game, it wants to be a whole universe. But is that universe actually interesting enough to warrant flying through it? Unfortunately, I'd say the answer is no.

Not gonna lie, a future where the political system makes no sense, contradicts itself and smacks of misunderstanding.. is probably the most believable part.

I disagree with the idea that once "progressing" to democratic nation states we would never again return to a different government type. Human progress is by no means guaranteed or irreversible.

The game takes place like 900 years in the future, and given that empire has only been a bad word for roughly 100 years, it's a bit solipsistic to assume that in the next 9 centuries there could be similar swings in feelings on the matter. History is not a one way street.

I've seen a certain Jingles frequently crack jokes about how Star Citizen is too ambitious, but this is taking it to a whole new level.

Ideology can change over time and through war. Rome was staunchly against a form of king yet celebrated their Augustus and after the collapse of western Rome Alaric started referring to himself as king.

Here in Brazil there are monarchists who wants to reinstitute the monarchy, renaming the Federative Republic of Brazil to Empire of Brazil, as was the official name of the country until 1889, and having an Emperor as head of state. Granted, the monarchists are a small group, but it is a real life example of a political faction that don't shy away from this imperial terminology. Perhaps the name "empire" just don't have the same negative conotation in all over the world? All those political views changes over the time. Remember that in Roman Empire the title King (Rex) had a very negative conotation, and thus the name Imperator was created. Today, it may be inverted. Who knows how people will think in the future?

The bit about how cities can rise and fall in importance reminded me of New Mombasa in Halo. Mombasa is Kenya's second-largest city and a fairly major port nowadays, but by 2552, it's one of the most important cities on Earth due to the construction of the planet's first space elevator there. (And for bonus points, since Mombasa is fairly close to the equator, it's also a pretty good location for an actual space elevator.)

Theirs something I want to point out in the Shanghai picture. You see large ring buildings. In modern day Shanghai, their is a famous building known as the “bottle opener” due to its SQUARE hole at the top. As locals complained that a circular hole would be too reminiscent of the Japanese sun.
