They definitely see them as another lifeform that is lots of fun to play with. I think that's about the limit of their thinking. They don't analyse the meaning of words like we do but we very often overcomplicate things. They like each others company. It's as simple as that.
I agree. My horse and dog play together. This is only because my horse is temporarily without an equine pasture mate. Horses are herd animals, and I think when my horse gets a new equine partner he will not be as interested in the dog. And as much as the dog enjoys his play with the horse, he definitely wants to go inside with me and sleep on the bed. Also if that orang was hungry he would not share.
@@awnutz That's not necessarily true, studies have been done with different species of primates -bonobos and chimpanzees primarily- to study their empathy in relation to food. Two strangers of each species were kept in adjacent, but separate cages/spaces and after not being fed for the day one would be given food while the other would not. The individual given food had the option to share the food with the other individual. Bonobos shared practically every time, chimpanzees were far more reluctant to share their food. Plenty of non-human and non-primate species exhibit empathy and compassion for members of their own and other species, just because humanity invented words to attribute to these natural displays does not mean they are exclusive to us. Although I do disagree with anthropomorphizing animals, empathy and compassion are not exclusively human traits, they are behaviors that many living things exhibit and practice. Besides, I can think of plenty people who would be reluctant to share the food if put into a similar situation to the chimpanzees and bonobos in the aforementioned experiment.
I don't know, even if that is the case, humans seek company from other humans (and other animals) for basically the same reasons, I don't think our social and emotional behavior and intelligence is any different or lesser than theirs, when we live in egalitarian societies that is. I think once groups of people enter the chiefdom and state forms of civilization our compassion and emotional intelligence depreciates to a level below many animals whose intelligence is computed to be inferior to our own.
It gives me chills to realize that the Earth being divided by many nations today proves that we evolved from chimps tribal instincts. . If we evolved from Orangs, we probably have 1 whole earth empire without nations.
@@paulm.965 nope. We wouldn't have any united bond whatsoever. The orangutangs are the most asocial of all the great apes. The males practically live their lives in complete solitude. Orangutans (mainly female ones) only form social groups out of necessity, and even then the groups are usually very small. Most orangutangs just keep to themselves and their offspring/relative. The behaviour you see here isn't normal for actual wild orangutans
@@paulm.965 also I want to add.. we did not evolve from chimps. Chimps are chimps, they are their own branch of apes separate from us. We are closer related to chimps because we shared a common ancestor for a longer period. But at no point were humans a chimp, they are their own spieces that went in a different direction on the evolution family tree
What's even more spectacular is a GREAT APE swimming. I was taught that Apes have bones too dense to allow them to swim in deep water. This is amazing footage. It even submerged and held its breath.
The thing is Orangutans are incredibly inquisitive creatures by nature so chances are it witnessed the keeper feed the dog and "thought" "that looks like fun!"
I’ve seen a few documentaries about African Baboons kidnapping puppies. They will feed it, even suckle it, care for it, sleep with it, groom it meticulously… they do it because they know the pup will grow up to be a great watch dog one day, for the whole troop. I thought it was amazing because they’re really thinking about the distant future (you know, months later, rather than an hour later) I think it’s pretty impressive for a baboon.
Orangutans are the smartest animals. I love them so much! It's a shame I didn't learn about Orangutan until I was in my mid thirties! School failed me!
This makes me beg the question about other shady animal keepers not on Tiger King that I’ve seen on these wildlife shows acting like professional experts.
Orangutans are some of the most incredibly intelligent and beautiful animals on earth. The sad thing is that in 20 years they will be extinct in the wild all because of palm oil.

well actually some lesser hominids such as baboons and macaques will adopt lower species, baboons will adopt a dog as a look out for potential pray and will use them as a hunting tool and macaques will adopt marmosets simply as a pet.
Exactly! I don’t agree with his analysis. It does seem possible this orangutan don’t have the full sense of responsibility an adult human has for a pet. Like he doesn’t take care of the dog night and day and has a best friend relationship rather than a parental one with the dog. I imagine that’s because this guy isn’t in the wild or fully independent and has the mentality of a kid living at home. But they seem deeply bonded and would miss him!
I never saw my Dog as secondary as a kid. Far from it. Animals are family. I think it's wrong to think animals and kids do that. We are all intelligent and love and think and feel.

The dog may not look scared but that doesn't mean he is not in danger. As we can see the Orangutan can breath under water very easy with out any fear. I have had pet dogs for over 30 years, they can panic easily while in water.
What happened to the first orangutan, Suriya? He's the one that found the dog and he was the one to teach the dog to swim and he, himself was the only known orangutan that could swim. Now, in this video, they just substitited Suriya with this new one, without any mention of what happened to Suriya.

Apes don't generally think about things that aren't present. That's why Koko talking about the earth is a stupid meme. Those kind of abstractions are very unusual for apes and when they exist its about things the ape has experienced themselves. Not concepts.
