The unmistakable sound of a Bombardier KD... preserved KD70 UPDATE September 2023

Sorry for the radio silence folks but I have been under significant stresses over the last year. Between my beloved mother taking ill and passing away, in addition to career developments, not much has been happening at my end. However in 2023 some further work has been done to ex Dublin Bus KD70 in the form of new fuel pipes from the tank and removal of the front doors in order for some much needed welding repairs to be carried out to the front steps. The raspy sound from the exhaust of the Detroit 6V-71 as it passes by the camera is the true sound of Dublin in the 1980s when a KD passed by you! Hope you enjoy it

I probably got this to school in the 1990s when we lived in Clondalkin. Some pep in that engine!

I think i remember buses like this in Dublin in 1989, and i thought it sounded more like the American buses at the time?

One did. Not even sure if it made it to Baghdad. Once it left Ireland there was no trace of it

Which was the more pleasant sounding engine?? I certainly don’t rate the Detroit sound in that KD.
@markthebusman

The 6-71 in an MG coach was a different setup engine compared to the 6V-71 in a KD bus. One was a straight 6 the other a V6... plus the coach had the engine horizontally mounted in the middle chassis under the floor (pancake engine)... the KD was at the back, mounted at a very unusual angle

I wish you would've been able to save KD146, with the Cummins L10 and Voith D863.

@@markthebusman KD146, if I am getting it right, was another test mule. It was originally built in 1982 and delivered with the Detroit Diesel 6V-71 and Allison V-730, but in '83 it was changed to the L10 and D863; this test was successful enough that new units KC2 thru KC202 were delivered with the Cummins L10 and Voith D851 or D863 depending on if the buses were on the streets (185 hp) or the highways (250 or 290 hp).

Yep you are correct. The rack gets stuck in fully open position due to lack of use usually. The injectors are set to fully open in order to get the engine to fire when cold, and then spring back to normal fuelling. But when they stick open is when there's a big problem

The KD was like an elephant on rollerskates, clumsy and very bouncy... handled like one as well. But absolutely full of character

It sounds as sick as they all did by 2000, or whenever they went out of service. Sounded nice when they were new though. As bisses though - what utter crocs of s***!
@markthebusman
@markthebusman 4 месяца назад
The KDs had multiple modifications made to them during their service lives, including air filter repositioning, re-piping, all sorts of unseen stuff hence why they sounded different near the end of their day's. Yes some were quite sick and worn out but they had the absolute arse driven out of them for 15+ years. This particular one probably sounds different as well as its missing a load of panels and other sound dampening things

@@markthebusmaninteresting to hear, thanks. Pity there’s no footage of them as new, I absolutely loved them. At that point! I wonder if any of the old Vanhools made it into preservation? I remember 2 types, 1 with a sloping back, 1 with a straight back.
