RIP steve albini. all the nirvana guys are getting old now, sad to think this was 30+ years ago. hopefully there will be another group like nirvana and another figure like kurt in the near future. we need something new!
I agree we need something new and different, but it is never going to be like Nirvana... the impact will be meaning the unity of embracing raw authenticity through music, but never another Nirvana. I am glad they exist
I used to believe all the origin myths too but turns out it’s entirely orchestrated. The industry, the bands, the hits, the drama, the suicides, the culture. Factory made illusions
Usually bands that have a huge hit album can't follow it up, but Nirvana topped that massive commercial Nevermind. Amazing feat by Kurt. Also bittersweet to think what he and the band could have created.
absolutely, the entire tone and entirety of that album just flowed and meshed so well, like how deftones white pony came together and still stands the test of time.
Imagine living in Aberdeen, USA and having Krist and Kurt as your friends.. even starting off a band with them. And then getting kicked out, ok, but still.. just imagine.
I never understood why the label thought it was unlistenable? I got the vinyl box set a few years back that included the albini mix of the lp and I thought it wasn’t that different! And I personally enjoy the original mix the best !!!!
My first and favourite album from Nirvana! Then incesticide and the so hyped nevermind no. 3 at that time.... later unplugged was no one with in utero!
@@joshuajohnson1036 damn dude.. OK then. Doesn't make much sense to bring up songs in a discussion specifically referring to whole albums.. yet that's what you did.
Cobain - "The first time I played it at home, I knew there was something wrong. The whole first week I wasn't really interested in listening to it at all, and that usually doesn't happen. I got no emotion from it, I was just numb. So for three weeks Krist and Dave and I listened to the record every night, trying to figure out what was wrong with it, and we talked about it and decided the vocals weren't loud enough, the bass was inaudible and you couldn't hear the lyrics. That was about it." The band all wanted to remix the album but Albini said no and actually held the masters hostage. Then Albini crafted this false narrative that the record company pressured the band to remix it. This claim was reprinted in a 1993 Newsweek article. Nirvana wrote a letter to Newsweek denying any pressure to change the album and saying the author had "ridiculed our relationship with our label based on totally erroneous information". When Kurt was asked if he'd spoken to Albini since the dispute, he replied "No," "I don't have any desire to talk to him again."
@@abdullah82m They know it’s just business. Kurt was probably the one most concerned with the media’s coverage of the album at the time so they probably cared little back then and very little now 30 years later. they’re all professionals at the end of the day.
They liked it just fine, but saying they didn’t generated the defiant energy that fuels the industry. We didn’t believe it either, even when the Pistols made it perfectly clear: “rock and roll swindle” suits vs rockers is the oldest game in the business.
I really wish Nirvana released one more album before Kurt died so people could get one last taste of them & realized they were the most important punk band of the 90s. I'm sure there's a ton of unreleased material that Courtney is sitting on that could make for a full album. The Lights Out box set isn't what I'm talking about. I'm talking about unreleased studio recording that haven't been properly mixed and mastered.
nah the utero album was perfect, it was all over the place and perfect ending to a group you can tell kurt was complete and just made whatever he wanted towards the end he said what he had to say honestly i think he left at a great height
Actually somewhere I saw something with Krist talking about that and he said that there really isn’t anything left. So I am not sure that there is a bunch of unreleased material.
@@Scyber_Official it's not like there was a huge gap of time between their last release and Kurt's death. In utero came out in 94 .. he died in 94. That WAS the last taste. There was no time for anything else. Unless you count unplugged.
The unreleasable album that got released and was a huuuge hit long before Kurt's untimely death. The label that releases sonic youth and boss hog records wasn't gonna release in utero? C'mon!?!?
They probably did not think those records had the potential to sell records at the level of Nirvana and would be losing money if it was not more commercially acceptable sounding. I saw Boss Hog at that time and they were so incredible!
@@adamnorr2265 Don't you DARE say that or else GLOBALIST Greta is gonna get offended! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zoKVwNlgu2Y.htmlsi=giIdBxGC-tMwdxZ6
I see my hero Steve's face in the thumbnail. I will shed gallons of blood stained tears if this video so much as suggests that he was anything less than he was the greatest, most knowledgeable talent to ever exist and his opinion=objective science fact and any serious artist would be enhanced by having the honor of Steve ripping your efforts to ribbons with a ruthlessly well worded critique.
@@thewedge8823 well too much low end can muddy the bass, cause frequency cancelation and make things inaudible.. without getting specific it could be a few different things.
@@thewedge8823 it is kinda funny that the bass player would say the bass weren't loud enough and the vocalist says the vocals weren't loud enough. Everybody wants to be heard I guess.
Of course the record fools didn't like it. It was not poppy enuff fo the lamestream. Kurt was a genius and Steve was the perfect guy to record their music. RIP Kurt and Steve!
Dude. That?! Is THE Album for me! I wasn't as big a Fan of Nevermind as the rest of Earth!(Probably..due to 'Smells like teen spirit's over USE and ease of playing?) I was more into Pearl Jam and AIC in the beginning. Now? Bleach? Incestiside? Fun! Nevermind? Had Great songs ON it..don't get me wrong. but? Something about teen spirit? I just can't dig! Now?! In Utero?? Absolutely hit me in the Right place! Not a bad song on there!😊 And..Of course?! Unplugged? Is the ultimate Record. If ya read the song titles ...and know the meanings? Those songs were in a Certain 'order' for a reason. Kurt's.. own reasons. It was like his Good Bye to Fans. Crazy.
I'm very accepting of mainstream music.. although a lot sucks.. and honestly in utero in my mind should be considered more palatable to the mainstream then nevermind... but maybe that's why im not a producer.. edit- after thinking about it I realized this video is more about the mix then the songwriting and arrangement.
I can understand why the record execs didn't like In Utero: while the album has some good tracks, the quality of its individual tunes & its overall level of production is a step back from Nevermind. Nirvana and their die hard punk fans love In Utero, but anyone who's listened through both albums can clearly hear why Nevermind is an absolute masterpiece; Butch Vig deserves a shitpile of credit for his production on that album, even though Nirvana themselves ultimately claimed they didn't like the sound on the album after it started flying off the shelf like nothing we'd ever seen before in 1991!!!
I do believe Steve got paid $100K, not $2M. There are interviews out there that say they loved the original mix, but then blamed Albini for its “abrasiveness” or whatever. It was DGC that wanted it changed and pushed for it. Scott Litt was called in to remix HSB and All Apologies. Hmmmmm.
