gossip girl 2.0 had everything on its side, guaranteed viewership, knowledge of what people didn’t like about the original, and a presumed large budget for clothing ( which people loved about the original ) and it STILLED missed
I feel like while the outfits they wear in the new one are cute, they don't really reflect their personalities of set them apart. If you show me a serena outfit and a blair outfit I will instantly know which outfit belongs to each girl. In the gossip girl reboot however they are not distinct at all. Only audrey's outfits which are more on the preppy side are kinda distinguishable, but other than that they all blend together.
in the most kindest way i don't think the casting (particularly the adults) was the best choice and in a lot of scenes it's very obvious that some don't have the acting chops needed for the show and sometimes the delivery is harmed/doesn't work because of it but the writing doesn't really lend them a helping hand and the dialogue feels like its written by a 30 year old man who went on Instagram for two hours and uses it as a reference for how younger people speak also fun fact the actress that plays kate is younger than multiple of the people playing the students
oh thank god im not the only person who imagines directing reboots to tv shows i love in my head. you have no idea what i have in store for wizards of waverly place
I don't think he should be written out. I don't like Obie but I like what Obie COULD BE. He's the perfect representation of the rich boy who tries to be "woke" but it's all superficial. He's not a good person but he pretends to be because he wants to be perceived as a "good guy" and an "ally" and ignores his privilege. I just wish the show wasn't so wishy-washy with his character. They want you to believe he's a good person and he's not. Just commit to him being fake.
also 2.0 had a clear, fun villain in monet and they don't think to utilise her at all. even her introduction was the most impactful, the little we see of her mom (or, you know, the lady doing the kerry washington/olivia pope impression) yelling at kate was still very fun and she's a great foil for literally everyone.
i think ultimately the main problem for the ggrb is that there are too many straight man characters. they're trying too hard to establish most characters are good people when that doesn't work for gossip girl. the original gossip girl did a great job at hammering home that almost every single fucking character on that show was a terrible, reprehensible person, and that is what we loved about it. we loved watching terrible rich people do terrible things. and i think this time they wanted to make the ggrb less satirical and more grounded in realism, however i cannot imagine most billionaire upper east side raised teenagers are anything but absolutely heinous, detestable people who connive and backstab to the extreme. of course there's good people everywhere but that was the whole selling point of old gg. back when it was airing it sparked a huge national fascination with upper east side heirs and heiresses and "is it really like that?". and turning that on its head and selling most characters as normal, relatable people totally defeats that. not that you can't make a good show with good rich people, but when you're trying to make a gossip girl reboot it just doesn't work because the whole point of the original is that they were never good people.
Thats exactly what Gossip Girl in the 20s needs to be. It needs to feel smart and dripping in sarcasm. I also kind of think it would be better if they were kids of the original cast or something. Most wealth in America is inherited, so having some Archibald, Waldorf, Vanderwoodsen, Bass, and Humphrey characters would give it that exclusive feel.
yeah but people on social media these days cant differentiate character and actor so shows these days dont let actors act heinous acts. Sugar coated acting.
fr gossip girl isn’t a show about good people. no one on there is a good person. but ggrb tries so hard to make their characters good people it’s annoying
even jenny and dan, the “poor” students of constance were shady and constantly scheming. they were technically suppose to represent the audience, dan who helped us get introduced to the high society world as he gets introduced to the world too and we navigate it alone with him and jenny. but even then there are moments where dan is a dick and jenny matches blair in her scheming and iconic awfulness. especially at the end when dan is revealed to be gossip girl all along. moral of the story is that they are all awful people, period albeit with relatable moments and occasionally good sides (if not a bit out of touch).
I remember reading about the show before it aired, and the show runner did an interview where he said the new Gossip Girl was more about social media, and the way people expose themselves now. I was thinking Gossip Girl was going to be more of a collaborative thing more about the people sending in tips and less about a singular person. I pictured more of a gossip guru/Reddit vibe where everyone was always trying to expose each other and using social media for receipts. I don’t if I explained that well, but I was hyped for that premise, and then I watched pilot and it was just… the teachers?
As a teacher, the most unrealistic part for me is the fact that the teachers even have the emotional or physical problems energy to do all that crap. Also, why the hell do they not just apply to other schools?!
that specific school has a ton of prestige so it would look better on a resume and probably pays the best. and maybe its also practical things like location. maybe they think they'll encounter the same problem at any school since they seem to see it as teenagers these days as a whole, or maybe rich teens specifically, being a certain way. kids at any fancy new york private school could be stuck up, bratty, apathetic about schoolwork, disrespectful to teachers, focused on social media, & privileged enough to get their bad grades changed and have their parents bribe away any trouble they get into.
i think the zoya&julien relationship would have worked a lot better if they actually didnt like/know eachother much at the beginning instead of friends to not friends to friends over and over again. Like i have to root for them to get along to care about them not getting along. And then maybe they could have made the betrayals work better in a "i knew i shouldnt have trusted you" way
It always would have (even though I still don’t like it) made sense for Zoya to go after her sisters ex since they wouldn’t have known or like each other r
My friend says “go piss, girl” to me all the time, cause I have adhd and if I don’t pee immediately when I realize I will forget for two hours, anyways that’s what I thought the thumbnail said and I started dying
this might be weird but the one thing that put me off the show was how quickly julien and zoya’s dads made up. how is a decade long feud resolved so quickly and effortlessly? it just reinforced how little the writers care about developing relationships and storylines
ngl I thought most of the "students are behaving better because of gossip girl!" was supposed to be confirmation bias from the teachers. like in the first episodes there were these situations (julien being nice to kate, someone raising a hand in class) that could be totally unrelated to gossip girl and yet the teachers would think it meant their plan was working.
Max's actor really did amazing. And the writing didn't dissapoint. He was the one I thought would be the most overt knockoff version of Chuck Bass but no, they managed great with him. The main....godddd Obie or whatever his name is, is so boring. I just want him and his stories with Zoya and Julian gone.
I love when you upload! I’m so upset by what gossip girl COULD be. It’s impossible to do a “woke” gossip girl (they didn’t achieve that) when the whole core of the show is rich kids being shameless. This was such a miss
I don't think anyone was coming to watch Gossip Girl 2.0 to receive a very special lesson for an hour a week. It's supposed to be a fun, juicy scandal of a show! But instead of us seeing bitchy rich kids and stylish clothes and a lead with some bite, they forced woke buzzwords and high-horse characters down our throats. No one wanted to see that! I'm a black girl and even I don't want to see that! I see it enough in the real world. Gossip Girl shouldn't be the real world.
i absolutely love this types of videos you’ve recently been doing. deep dives and analysis of old teen shows like gg or teen wolf. it’s just so refreshing to see franchises and properties that get shit on so much for being “trash” or whatever bc it’s usually advertised for teen girls being talked about in depth, especially bc it’s not done by someone who just watched it for a video, it’s done by someone who was a fan. don’t get me wrong the movie dumpster days will always hold a special place in my heart because i love a good roasting of a bad movie and it was my whole introduction to your channel, but your newer content is so awesome. just wanted to say this bc i’ve been rewatching the teen wolf video and a few others and the energy and vibe of them is so comforting and entertaining
About the "confession" at the beginning, I kinda do the same too, but normally I just create fanfics of my interests of the time (often remaking the same dramatic scenario over and over till I'm tired of it, forget it, am happy with the conclusion or develop a new obsession)
I hated the new gossip girl. It was boring, the characters were all unlikeable and not in a love to hate them way, the episodes were too long and the colour palette of the show was depressing 🤷♀️😅 Totally missed the mark for this fan of the genre as a whole 🥴
always super exciting to see your uploads! coming back to watch this later as i specifically went on youtube to rewatch your bridgerton video (one of my faves of yours) after binging season 2.
*Everyone:* *Me:* Commenting at 0:00 timestamp to inform *EVERYONE* that this woman knows what she's talking about and I already agree with every single thought that is about to come out of her mouth. That is all.
Here’s my confession: How I Met Your Father is pretty fucking good. Like, not amazing, but I appreciate that they are channeling the style but not a person to person replacement of each OG character. And Hilary Duff is darling in it! The guys are whatever, but Ms. Duff 😍
i'm literally crying bc i do that too! i even have pinterest boards with aesthetics, character traits, casting, everything. and gossip girl reboot gave me plenty of material for my excessive daydreaming bc it's SO bad. not a "so bad it's good" just... they had a vision. but that's all 👹
You are so articulate and witty that I hardly ever notice when your videos are over 20 mins- they are so interesting to watch. I've been watching your videos for years and I always look forward to your new posts. Thanks for all your hard work and the research you put into the videos!
Lol it just reminded me it took me a good while to figure out what the character names were. Aki and obie aren't even complicated but they just did not stick in my mind and then I got all the guys confused at one point 😅😅
Been excited to hear your thoughts on this! I think I posted this on another GG reboot, but watching the show felt exhausting while being simultaneously boring. But there is potential, and I hope so badly they focus on it in S2.
i love your channel so much ugh. i love how you speak and i love that you do it without breaking the flow with a thousand disclaimers or explanations of what you mean. honoured to be well-versed enough in pop culture and vocab to follow along lol
Great video as always queen! Also I just wanna say that i noticed u drop the one tree hill name in there and that got me wondering whether u might one day consider doing a deep dive on that show. I apologize in advance if ur not the type to take video requests, its just that ive noticed almost every popular teen drama has gotten a video essay of sorts on youtube except for one tree hill. And it makes me so sad cuz that show is genuinely sooo good and iconic, and deserves the deep dive imo.
i loved your review as always! as much as i see its biggest flaws - obie, the lack of chemistry, the lack of shippable ships, and hit-or-miss dialogue, i find myself defending it to people all the time and i WILL still be staying tuned to season 2, hoping for some corrections.. i do think some of its faults were due to covid affecting casting etc but lets see how s2 goes
They could easily do the "they're not gossip girl anymore we don't know who it is" thing. Pretty little liars couldn't keep going with mona being the only A after season 2 so why not do the same thing (without the eventual reveal)
julia how could you drop this today i have so much work to do that i haven't started yet and you know i'm going to watch the whole 40 minute video!!! my productivity feels personally attacked but alas, i can't be mad.
I love your videos so much! All of your videos are so well thought out and absolutely charming! I haven't seen the original or "2.0" (and don't plan to) but that doesn't make the video any less entertaining!
I personally believe that Gossip Girl should have had a different set of rich teens in a different US city every season (Examples - Honolulu , Boston , Miami , Dallas/Austin , New Haven , Napa Valley , DC , Seattle , San Francisco) . It would allow them to focus on what each group cares about , their values , how they'd spend their money etc. , gives them a tighter storyline and it would also mean you'd never have to reveal who Gossip Girl is because clearly it's just a Guru Gossip for rich kids instead of influencers.
I do agree that with some tweaking this can be much better and think the general bones are just in need of shaping up. I like the idea of Sisters figuring out a relationship and hope they keep them trying to be closer still and think Monet is interesting as a bad girl but should keep it light My biggest change tho is that I wish the main cast was at college instead of high school still. High School and that potential trouble can potentially be brushed off as citing the characters 'becoming mature' as they age but college not only makes the age closeness between the teachers & students more interesting - as well as trying to push that teacher/student relationship boundary - but allows them to be in a space of not quite peers. Plus I feel like there's more ground for secrets to be buried that are coming out in present and that the reveals would be more devastating towards early 20 somethings trying to establish themselves as working adults with a vision for themselves vs. teens still 'figuring themselves out'
I agree with everything so far and it's refreshing to see a video on GGRB by someone who was also excited by the concept. It has so much potential but the bad outweighs the good so far. Really hope S2 is an improvement, the Julien vs Monet storyline seems interesting and hopefully the endless Julien and Zoya fights are retired. Seeing the teachers on set for S2 makes me worried though, we need Shan to hack them and take over!
if you liked the soundtrack to gg 2.0 you should check out literally everything else rob lowry has ever done the music for (the bold type, ramy, etc.) he's a master of his craft and never misses
Also, +1 to Max and Luna. I was aggressively shipping Aki and Max up until the writers realized it was weird how Luna and Monet only seemed to be shown onscreen when we were deep in Julien's bullshit (which resulted in Luna and Max having more scenes together). Their dynamic is cute. Luna needs a partner who can keep up with sharp wit, and Max is just the man for the job. Also, as much as I'd appreciate Max and Aki together, the writers are absolutely not equipped to handle the fallout of that.
Unrelated to the video topic but I also do the sleep mental walk throughs but it’s redesigning my house from the ground up if I ever win a bunch of money instead of tv lol
I’m actually kind of invested in the triad (at least to see how the show handles it) but I do also ship Max and Luna. They’re cute together, they have chemistry, and I think they could be good for each other.
Nah cause do the same thing when it comes to shows. I literally act out how I think charter would look like who would be together as plot points that I want to change. I even do this with movies too. 😭✋
23:50 I understand why you didn't wanna go into more detail here (quite honestly, it's refreshing to see someone outside of the community step back before they start stepping on toes), but you're absolutely correct. Aki and Audrey most definitely should have broken up. They were feeling Max more than they were feelin' one another, and like... That's fine!! You're 17!! It's v rare that you find your forever bae that early in your life. I know that they've been a couple for a v long time, but it's clear whatever flame they had had died even before the show starts. Max ribbing Audrey by saying she was married and monogamous at 16 was the most unsubtle foreshadowing I've ever seen, but my man had a point. You're too fucking young to be trying to make a relationship work. Being 16 is hard enough; you don't need to add the stress of maintaining a relationship that's hit a rough patch the way Aki and Audrey's had. Aubrey also didn't deserve Aki after her casual homophobia in episode 4. Julian immediately called it out, but sis; one of your so called best friends is openly pansexual. My boy openly delights in giving as many middle fingers to normality as he can stand (which I stan), but your boyfriend (who they've been dropping hints isn't straight, Kim K style) developing A Thing^TM for him isn't weird. And rly, the two of you developing A Thing^TM for the same guy rly just goes to show how little you were feeling one another. Just Sayin'.
Great video all the way through! And I'm a secret shipper of Max + Luna also lol they had small moments this season but wow the chemistry was definitely present.
High thot: ggS2 The blonde teacher gives up gossip girl and gets with the dad and moves schools or becomes a writer who cares Then the Zoia (?spelling) figures out who gg was and confronts the teacher taking gg over behind the scenes. The rest of the show is a “who done it” until the end when all is revealed
Honestly I would have loved a season focused of Julien and Zoya and their complicated feelings about their mother. Like Julien’s mom left her and her dad for another man, and then died while giving birth to what would feel like her replacement daughter. I’m sorry but there is no way Julien wouldn’t have complicated feelings about that!! And many kids whose mothers die in childbirth have a strong survivor’s guilt they have to deal with. Lean more into Julien’s dad’s feelings on it, make him a bigger obstacle to the sisters coming together. It could have been deeper than dumb high school shit.
- i also think of reboot ideas to go to sleep lmao - it took me a second to remember that lenny bruce is not that man's actual name lmao - i think having zoya and julien know and love each other was meant to be subverting the expectation that they would be like blair and serena and immediately be antagonistic, but yeah it served nothing cuz as soon as they stopped being friends in that episode i was like and you did this for what? - the way that teacher storyline had me exactly like you, i was like yes, they're not doing it to oh fuck they are to oh ok predator but why do it at all then? it almost turned me off the show, but i'm a sucker for thomas as max, he's great, and him aki and audrey, they're just neat
