In this episode, I interviewed Writer Burt Kearns about his new book "Lawrence Tierney: Hollywood's Real Life Tough Guy", which just came out. I loved the book and highly recommend getting it.
Lawrence Tierney was a film noir legend, who appeared in many feature films, television show and in commercials. He also did some theatre. His career went up and down for his entire life, due to his alcoholism and bar brawls, which lead to many arrests.
He's best known as playing John Dillinger in "DILLINGER", as well as "THE HOODLUM", "THE DEVIL THUMBS A RIDE", "RESERVOIR DOGS", and television shows like "SEINFELD" & "HILL STREET BLUES", amount many other credits.
His story is tragic, yet inspiring, as he continued to work and thrive, even after many ups and downs in his life.

Fascinating interview as usual, Robert. What really strikes me, though, is how backwards the treatment of addiction and mental illness still is. ""Bandaids" are still being applied to these terrible situations, and true harm reduction is rare. But I agree Tierney was a true survivor! I'm now eager to watch some of his film.
@RobertBellissimoAtTheMovies
I've seen many bandaids to these issues. I agree ! Thanks for watching!

It's a shame I have lots of pictures of uncle Larry with my grandfather vito and grandmother and my mom when he lived in our house in Elmont ny. I have a letter from Larry's mom to my grandfather as well. Larry was a really good guy.

Great to hear from one of his relatives! Is one of his brothers your dad ?

Great interview! I'm not sure if you've re-watched this but thought I'd mention that several times Burt's answers are cut off bc you're commenting "right" or "uh-huh" and the computer cuts his audio, so missed a little bit of his comments

Thank you! I haven't seen it since it came out, but I'll have a look. The computer doesn't cut the audio, but I may have talked over him occasionally when responding.

I met him when he was pretty old after he had a stroke .my friend Alex berev was a trainer for him ..he still looked tough as hell,but he was very nice,this was in Venice beach where he had a apt,he used to listen to me play stride piano in Venice. Bottom line he was pretty nice to me .

I really enjoyed the book. I wish there had been more about the films and his personal relationships, though--but still, I couldn't put it down.

I would love if someone did a musical about the life of Lawrence Tierney

Wow, Robert. Another great interview! I immediately put a hold on the Tierney book at my library which has it on order. I had forgotten about his role on Seinfeld. I’m interested as well in what Kearns comes up with in his Brando book. Fascinating guest.

I loved this interview. Lawrence Tierney was Priscilla Lane' s last leading man in the film Bodyguard.

Bellissimo, You talk too much. Tierney would take care of that with his fist to teeth removal punch. 😳🤕

It's an interview show, what do you expect?

I always find it strange that I’m a Tierney and my Mother was a Riordan and they’re the two leads in “Hoodlum”. Something imitating something, and I’m an actor.
