@Leif208

So, let's be historically accurate. First, Sakanoe no Tamuramaro was not black. And as for Yasuke, he was indeed black, but he wasn't a samurai. He was a novelty in Japan (brought as a slave or servant by a Portuguese priest) and a Japanese leader was so fascinated by him (especially by his black skin. Tried to have him prove it was real by having him try to wash it off), that he wanted to use him as a way of gaining popularity. He at first made him his retainer (which is a step up from an indentured servant) and later made him a page, which is a special servant to a samurai. There wasn't much recorded about his live in Japan but the last record of him was the following: "The vassal asked Akechi what should be done with the black man, and he said, 'A black slave is an animal (bestial) and knows nothing, nor is he Japanese, so do not kill him, and place him in the custody at the cathedral of Padre in India."

Here are his details: 250 koku.[8][11] He was granted the rank of Hatamoto, a fief and 80-90 servants. Interpreter and shipwright of Tokugawa Shogunate. I am Japanese. The story in this video is mostly bullshit. In particular The black theory of Sakanouye Tamuramaro in this video is wrong. The Sakanoueye family is descended from Emperor Ling of the Han Dynasty and has nothing to do with black people. Because of his family background, he was trusted by the emperor of Japan and served him for generations. Also, the phrase "for a Samurai to be brave he must have a bit of Black blood" does not exist. This is an insult to us Japanese. Please quit introducing false history. Also, the Ainu are not black. It was from Yasuke that blacks first appeared in Japanese history. As a descendant of samurai and a Japanese, I cannot overlook these videos. If you have questions about Japanese history, please write to us.

Oh, lord !!!! Afrocentric sites claim the most bizarre, incorrect theories. In the first example, Sakanoue was not a Negro whatsoever. I think a LOT of these sites don’t understand because one author put something in a book years ago, doesn’t make it true. In actual Japanese history there is NO reference to him having black ancestry at all. In the second case, Yasuke- he was DEFINITELY black but he was NEVER a Samurai. He was brought over by a Portuguese slave owner. He was sold to a Japanese man because he had never seen a black man before. The person who bought him died and he was given a short-sword and may have fought with a peasant army. He was only in Japan for a total of 3 years then was deported and sold to missionaries in India. Afrocentrism sure does make a LOT of unsubstantiated claims which are historically inaccurate. 😂

There were no black people in Japanese history. There is one exception. A story that dates back 20 years to the time of the General. It is said that when a missionary took a black slave and met a prominent person in power at that time (Nobunaga), he saw a black person for the first time, and at first he could not believe the blackness of the person and made the black person wash his body on the spot, saying,' He must have painted his body with ink.' It is said that, out of curiosity, he had the black man transferred to him, gave him the name' Yasuke,' gave him a territory, and made him a samurai. After that, he was involved in a rebellion by his subordinates and the person in power was killed, but when the captured Yasuke was asked how he was treated, the enemy warlord (Mitsuhide) said,' You don't have to kill him because he is not human,' and told the missionary to hand him over and return him to his home country.

The Ainu people of Japan were not "black" , Sakanouye No Tamuramaro had darker skin but he wasn't what would be called "black" in today's diverse idea of race. So no he wasn't an African Shogun. There are many Japanese histories such as the Shoku Nihongi that discredit all of the American "historians" (using the term loosely) that this video uses as references for Tamuramaro. This video even got the root of Samurai wrong yes its from the word saburau but it meaning is not "to guard" it's actual meaning is "to serve". And Yasuke, Yes he was a African man that went to Japan during the end of the Sengoku Period. And yes he was in service to Oda Nobunaga. But was he a Samurai? It's a strong maybe. There is evidence that he was, and evidence that he wasn't. Yasuke was given a stipend which was standard for Samurai, he was at times Nobunaga's weapons bearer (a position that Nobunaga often gave to his young boy lovers). He was given a home, servants, and an ornamental sword. All point to Samurai. But it seems that he was never given a surname or clan name which is most important when rising to the class of Samurai. It took Hideyosh years to rise in rank to become Samurai and sandal bearer to the daimyō. It's hard to believe that Yasuke did such in a few short months as he was only in Oda Nobunaga's service for around a year. The video says two years, yet another detail that the video got all wrong. Also there is also no account of Yasuke donning Samurai armor or going to battles. He did not lead bushi or ashigaru there is absolutely no evidence that he was a warrior under Oda Nobunaga in Japan. The Honnō-ji Incident. There is no historical account that Yasuke was at Nobunaga's side when he he commented seppuku, or that he carried off Nobunaga's head. It defies logic that a 6'2" back man snuck past 13,000 solders surrounding the temple with the daimyō's head it tow. It more likely he was outside the temple and fled to Nijō Shin-gosho when he saw the siege taking place. Also what happened to Nobunaga's head when Mitsuhide defeated Nobutada? Most Japanese historians think that all of Nobunaga's remains were cremated in the inferno that was Honnō-ji temple after the siege and none of the people inside could be identified. The only record we have of Yasuke from the Incident is him giving up his sword and when Akechi was asked of what should be done with the black man he said that a dog is not responsible for the sins of his master and that he was not Japanese and has no place in such matters, so he should be sent back to the priest that brought him here. It would seem that he didn't see him as a highly valued Samurai of Nobunaga. Thomas Lockley's book though a fun read should have been called the "Mythological and Fictional History" rather than the "True History" as he and his co-author took a historical subject that if all of the known records are gathered it would maybe fill one single page if wrote in large print and double spaced and made a 450 page book. It is 99% historical hypothesis, embellishment, and down right fiction. He even sighted sources that contradict his own "historical" telling. It's sad really that books such as this can be passed of as nonfiction, much like this video tries to pass itself off as.

Slavery existed in most countries, historically. Even the term “slave” has its origins in the word slav. The slavs, who inhabited a large part of Eastern Europe, were taken as slaves by the Muslims of Spain during the ninth century AD. We understand slavery to be the ownership, buying/selling of human beings for the purpose of forced & unpaid labour. This means that Africans enslaved other Africans. There were wars between different African communities & those who lost the war were either killed or “enslaved.” African slaves were traded/sold to the best offer, be it from another African community, Muslims, or trade ships. All are “slavers” . The English & New England trading ship captains/crew did not leave the ship to wander into African land to kidnap & enslave Africans. They would’ve been instantly overwhelmed and either killed or enslaved themselves. The slave ships traded/purchased already enslaved Africans, from other African slavers near the coasts. Of course, these acts are morally wrong, & reprehensible to us today, but were commonplace throughout history. The ships captain worked for the ships owners & the ships crew were hired to run the ship. The ships owners & captains were basically merchants engaged in selling or trading one thing for another. In this case, the slave trade consisted of trade of previously enslaved people in Africa.
