Grew up in the foothills of Appalachia. I was taught to always close the windows/doors & make sure windows were covered at night. My great grandma always said to never to look outside after dark & that if you think you heard or saw something out there, no you didn't. You need to mind your business because nothing happening outside after dark is anything you need to have dealings with.

@@MysteryArchives it was great, went over a lot of things I didn't look for when I was a teen! And to answer your question about why it's happening in the first place, CT has a lot of cursed land. The natives were screwed over a bunch of times. If you look up Lake Compounce (one of our amusement parks) the wiki page has a section about the land being cursed.

There were some people who would go up there in the past, I've been told, who weren't there for the most "wholesome" kinds of reasons. I'm not going to bother repeating what I've heard. But i do not blame the people who live there for wanting it closed off to the public. Teens going there to drink is one thing, that i can at least understand, even if they do make a huge mess. But some people, I'm just not quite comfortable with, them going out into the woods at night and their reasons. You know, some places attract the wrong types of people, for all the wrong reasons. I've been so close to this place so many times over the years, it's not at far from me (like 15 minutes), but i still haven't ever gone up there myself. To some people it's just another area of woods with some history. Not much to actually see that you can't see anywhere else. To get there now, without having any trouble, you need to hike up through the back way. Through all this state forest. I'm not motivated enough.

Ergot poisoning from the wheat used to make their bread. A very common issue at that time in history. Mold and spores from poisonous wild mushrooms/toadstools growing in the heavily forested region are notorious for causing hallucinations. A respirator and goggles could aid in a safe exploration with proper permissions ONLY. I believe there may be a simple, medically sound explanation. Also there I a need for soil and water testing, as I suspect presence of heavy metals and/or other highly toxic agents at play here.

All reasonable explanations. Along with iron ore tailing pollution. Here is another: sensationalism caused by the Warren's, vibrant imaginations, and finally: the internet. Something interesting to know: Dr. Carter, of the last story, remarried and continued to live at his cabin until the 40's with no incident. There were horseback riding, ski, and canoeing camps held there for over a decade (1930's, mostly), with no incidents. The place wasn't known to be "haunted" until the Warren's did a piece on the forest, then it became closed to the public after the subsequent vandalism. Is it a cool story? Sure. Is it true? No.

Radon? Mining the iron ore and living so close to the mines could have poisoned people with radon and methane gasses, maybe. I also assume there was a medical reason. Just guessing, of course.

As an Irishwoman, I can say that this is giving definite Daoine Sídhe vibes. If there are hawthorn trees in the area, those are linked to portals to the sídhe. Basically, the only way to protect yourself from them is don't build on their land, and if their presence is in an area, enact the strongest boundaries (and i don't mean walls or fences) around your property that you can, and keep iron horseshoes in your home and maybe on your person.

Yes! You are very wise! Exactly what came to my mind. Lush forests, clear brooks, fresh air. Place what looks nice, but if you settle in here, bad things happen. Horse are afraid, livestock and people got ill. Im from Slavic country, and of course we not tell "Daoine side", but fairies, elves, or wood nation, but it's the same thing. They afraid of iron. Also in mythology of my country they take human children and switch it with theyr child.

I’ve lived in CT my whole life and about 24 years ago, me and a group of friends visited Dudleytown. We went very late at night/early morning and man is that place eerie. The feelings you got as soon as you walked in is like no other. Very dark and sad. There’s little tiny firefly-like lights high up in the tops of the trees leading up to the entrance to the dark forest. They never stop lighting up and they lead you into the forest. I’d heard they were the spirits of the children that passed there leading you into the woods. We stayed for a few hours and walked around looking at all the house foundations. That was the only thing that was left. We were extremely lucky to not be caught because the neighbors and local police don’t take kindly to tress passing there. So please, don’t visit. This was 24 years ago and is much more guarded now.

Back in the Seventies, the Appalachian Trail went through Dark Entry Ravine (the name I knew it by) and you could legally hike along it. I camped there a couple of times with friends. We never saw or heard anything weird. We did find an old stone foundation or two, which was cool. But the next time I went back a few years later one of the foundations was pretty wrecked with lots of trash in it left by idiot partiers. At some point the AT was shifted to follow the Housatonic River, while Dark Entry Ravine was closed off to the public. I think that was at the request of the homeowners there (yes, people still live around there). Too bad; it was a pretty hike and there was an abandoned dirt road lined with huge blackberry bushes.

Very fascinating. I wonder if the iron mine could have had any effect on the area? Maybe the mismanagement of mining waste causing a contamination of the drinking water or something. I don't know a whole lot about mining, but I remember reading about how toxic chemicals are used as part of processing some kinds of ore. It wouldn't explain most of the freak accidents and tragedies, but maybe it could explain the "creatures" some people could see and how some of them went crazy.

Growing up, I used to watch every supernatural based program available. When it came to ghosts and hauntings, at some point the Warrens would show up. They would go through their normal routine and declare the area was infested with demons, never was there a harmless lost spirit, it was always a dangerous demon. Although I was young, I realized why they always told the homeowners they had a demon, it was because demons sell books and fill lecture halls. That is how the Warren's made their money, by doing an investigation then doing the lecture circuit and selling their books. From some accounts of the investigations, it appears that some of them caused more harm than good and when the owners tried to contact them to deal with the problem, the Warrens were nowhere to be found. So when this video mentioned the Warrens, I immediately said they found a forest full of demons and sure enough it was an infestation of demons.

I've been up there many times, there's nothing to see anymore, and it's just normal woods. The property is private, and there is a protected species of a tiny owl that only exists in that forest, since its habitat elsewhere is gone. I was part of a group with a local university that did a population survey of the owls, and nobody saw anything weird, just woods. If you don't have permission to be up there, expect to have the police tow your vehicle, and be fined. The residents got tired of the traffic when the first time people got hyped up to go back in the 80s, and people would go stomping through their literal backyards.

In New Hartford CT there are two camps that are haunted. There was murders there 1890 at the jewish camp. 20-30 years later they opened a Christian camp on the other side of the river, it did not last. Very odd things, a few people ended up dying there also. I found the old 1800s camp, I can not find where it is now again. The newer camp is easy to find. The old camp, there was something watching me the whole time. We built a little fire with a 18 tall X 12 wide log that burned all night, when we put it out the log had absolutely no burn marks, was the same size and weight. New Hartford was founded by Coach robbers, native associates, criminals. Puddletown road (center of old town) burned down to the ground, absolutely nothing left except for a fence and barn that still stand. They decided to move the town down past the bend on the river.

Great story. Personally I'd be interested to see a report on the ore that was mined in the area. If there is one mineral, there is often more, and some, particularly if they get into the water supply can have serious consequences to those living in the area. I'm not saying it isn't ghosts or the paranormal, but I do believe in ruling out any possible scientific causes.

Things look differently at night, than they do during the day. I've driven along dark highways at night, and I have watched clumps of trees that looked like something, but would unfold as I continued on by. I'm not saying this isn't true, because I've heard and seen things at night.

My family and I visited Dudleytown some years back. I took numerous photos. It was later discovered that there were figures in the photos peering out from behind trees. In addition, several family members were walking off the main path through a field when I suddenly felt danger and shouted to them to stop. My sister’s husband was filming with an old camcorder at the time. When they returned out and played the tape, you can hear me shouting for them to stop, and then demonic voices and sounds come over the tape. The hair on the back of my neck stood out. The Warrens later on confiscated the tape and photos and told us never to return there. We never did.

The people went nuts and killed eachother off as the legend goes. I also heard someone was struck and killed by lightning sitting on their porch nearby back in the 30s or 40s and supposedly some wealthy doctor nearby killed his wife. Many strange tales. I went there twice back in the 80s, nothing paranormal but oddly quiet like no birds or insects. Its beautiful there in the Fall. It was interesting to see the old stone foundations and walls.

been there a couple years back, some parts felt heavier than others, if that makes sense. Some angry souls there and some normal ones. just depends on how susceptible you are to entities. As far as the trespassing goes, they can buy it up, but no one can tell you where to go and what to do. Move freely without fear, realistically worse you're going to get is a warning.

I live in Connecticut and have all my 74 years. I have never hear of Dudleytown. Thank you for explaining it was part of the Cornwall Township. I have been through Conwall. I do not believe in ghost or supernatural creatures. There is a scientific reason why these people passed away, had serious hallucinations and needed care. Fungus, poisoning, disease. Tainted water could also be a factor.

Have you ever thought about doing a documentary about Black River Falls and the surrounding area in northern Wisconsin ? A total epidemic of supernatural activity, savage crime and mass insanity took place around 1890 and lasted around ten years. CT has a lot of spooky places. But much of the stories of the early times of Dudleyville are simply descriptions of the difficulty of life in North America in the 17th and 18th Centuries. It was a brutal wilderness. The Carter story is no curse but would be familiar to many of those early pioneers in North America. Dudleyville was never more than a small community of Cornwall. The ghost town is located on poor farming soil and far from a potable water supply. This accounts for much of the disease in the early days. That being said, the Mohawks considered the land to be sacred and it may have been the site of past strangemenss that contributed to its native recognition as sacred and the legends of curses and paranormal encounters by European settlers. Northwest CT is a weird place, bigfoot accounts are not unusual, and many places have dark, devilish names. Witchcraft is popular in rural CT and many modern-day wiccans and witches reside in the state. Ironic given that it was founded by Puritans and is largely populated by early 20th century immigrants from Roman Catholic cultures. Statistically, CT has the highest per capita of sociopaths of any state. That's unsettling, too.
