I don't think it would change. Aside from awesome talent, Jakob, more than any other runner I haver seen and I've been following track for 50 years, runs races at paces to maximize his result, regardless. of what anybody else is doing. Unbelievable discipline for someone that age.

I wish he would've run a mile, a 3000m, and a 5000m this season, before turning 20. He would probably have been the fastest teenage miler ever, and one in the top 5 in the 3000m and top 10 in the top 5 or 10 in the 5000m (teenage-class). Edit: I might as well include the best teenage times ever in those distances: 1500m: 3:28.68 Jakob Ingebrigtsen (2020) Mile: 3:48.50 Asbel Kiprop (2009) 3000m: 7:27.72 Eliud Kipchoge (2004) 5000m: 12:43.02 Selemon Barega (2018)

As a Norwegian, I have been following Jakob Ingebrigtsen and his brothers closely for many years now (all the way since Henrik's breakthrough in 2011). It is apparent that the prestige lies with the 1500m. They simply refuse to focus on the 5000m - even though they might be bigger talents on that particular distance. 1500m is the jewel in the crown. For Jakob, winning gold in the 5000m would never be considered the same achievement as winning on the 1500m. I'm saying this for the international audience out there, because it might be hard to fully grasp how big of a difference these two events hold when it comes to Jakob's heartfelt opinion of them. 5000m will always be his secondary distance. If he stops achieving great stuff in the 1500m he might not even bother to try to focus on the 5000m instead. I've "always" claimed that Henrik had bigger talent on 5000m than 1500m, but it is only now when he is actually not good enough to qualify for anything on the 1500m, that he has opted for having 5000m as his main distance. As long as he was "good enough" for the 1500m, there was never an option to focus mainly on 5000m (even though he achieved better results there). This very strong preference for 1500m runs in the family, and will probably never go away no matter what happens. Even their father and trainer Gjert Ingebrigtsen tell them "run the distance where your chances for prominent results are greatest - a medal is a medal" they don't agree. A 5000m medal is not a 1500m medal as far as they are concerned.

Jakob definitely has a bright future. In a norwegian interview half a year ago, he said that he thought he had the most potential in the half marathon. I will try to make a prediction based on facts and not on speculation or on more or less biased feelings: Jakob stated shortly before the opening of this season that his best distance at the moment is the 5000m. So if we assume he is at least as good on the 5000m as on the 1500m his 3:28.68 on the latter (1264 points on World Athletics´ ranking) equals just over 12:45 in the 5000m. In a perfect paced 5000m under good weather conditions he could go even faster as in the 1500m in Monaco where Jakob (and Timothy) could have run 1-2 seconds faster if the first pacemaker had not screwed it up. I don´t think, however, Jakob will have the opportunity to join a fast 5000m this year so we will not know before next year if times come back to normal. But Jakob reportedly is going to run the 3000m in DL Rome where the organizers have added this distance to the program to accomodate East Africans runners (Barega and more). Jakob has never run a competitive 3000m outdoors so it will interesting to see if he can live up to his 1500m and 2000m times. His 1264 points in the 1500m equals just over 7:26 in the 3000m which is much faster than any current East African have run, except for Kejelcha who has run around 7:28 twice.

@@RunForFunFun what does that have to do with anything? Jakob's 13:02 was ran with a last lap faster than Cheptegei's 5000m world record, I imagine just from better pacing and strategy he could've gone sub 13 in that race. Now he's grown a lot from then and he's showed that growth by bettering his 1500m by 1.5 seconds. Give him some wave lights, pacers, and throw someone that's in sub 12:50 shape in the race and he'll definitely get a 12:50.

@landonDoulers 4 года назад
@@itclientservices Were you referring to a road race or track race. The claim that Jacob was able to run the one road 5k at 6:28 is really stupid on TRP part because it makes no sense. Him being able to evenly split in one race does not mean that he can keep a 6:28 pace that was way faster than he was capable to run a full 5k at. He ran a slow half than a fast one TRP is basically saying he can just run the 1st half faster and still finish in 6:28

@@landonDoulers I said 5000m, so I meant the track, which is obviously going to be faster than the road (12:55 vs 12:35 for Cheptegei, with the course Cheptegei ran being faster than Jakob's). I think Jakob would be best at 800/1500/3000. The 5000/10000 is totally stacked with people like Cheptegei, Rhonex K, Solomon Berega, Hagos G, Kejelcha and more. In fact, 4 of the top 8 FASTEST 5000m runners of all time are still active TODAY. Also, Jakob's height, frame, and weight don't scream "distance runner" to me. He looks absolutely massive next to top tier Kenyans and Ethiopians. Even Kejelcha, who is the same height as Jakob, is at LEAST 15lbs lighter than Jakob. Not saying Jakob couldn't be competitive at the longer races... I just think his talent and body type leans more towards the mid distances (look at Rudisha at 6' 3 running the 800m, and Cheruiyot at 6'0 running the 1500m).

The pacing was perfect for an even split really. He was pretty much behind the 3rd guy splitting 55 low. If anything his split was a bit slow for a 3 30, especially because it's very hard and rare to maintain speed on the 2nd lap of a 1500m. The second lap is generally not a good lap to try to accelerate. A 54,5 + 56,5 (1'51") is generally better than trying to run even 56 (1'52") to set up a sub 3:30. Apart from Ingebritsen, I am willing to bet most sub 3:30 times opened with a sub 55 first lap.

As you matures physically as a runner over the next 3-4 years I think he will start racing 5km more on the track and even a few 10km. At 5km in the next 3 years I think he will be consistently running low 13 minutes and will break 13 minutes and even improve this to high 12:40's to break the 12:50 mark.

Whilst there has been some poor pacing this year, I would say that is the case every year. On the other hand, the pacing in Mo Farrah's 1 hour race looked pretty good. I think Jakob could get close to 13:00 at the moment and maybe break it in a perfect race, good pacers, good competition, good conditions and him having a good day, etc. If things are more normal next year, there is a reasonable chance he will break 13:00 in Tokyo.

Based on those splits on the road and his recent performances in the 1500 I think he's capable of dropping 12:42 on the track right now. He'd need his absolute best day to do this but I think he could. More impressively though, i think he could crack 7:24 in an outdoor 3k.

They actually weren't just run in Monaco, but over the years it just so happens that the annual diamond league meeting in Monaco has been the location where many of these athletes ran these times. Thanks to TRP for presenting these splits and comparisons. What a delight to watch! As European champion and record holder in the 1500, Jakob is more than a prodigy now. He is much faster this year than last, and on-track to match and possibly surpass Tim Cheruiyot in the next 2-3 years. The WR is still far far off for both guys, so we'll see. Yes, it looks like Jakob will be among the very best at all distances from 1500 to half-marathon - one of a kind. I expect he will stick to the 1500 and 5000 for the next few years.

Great break down video I'm only just realising how talented this guy is from ur video, obviously trains very hard and sensible and is a early bloomer. I hope he continues his career with no injuries and if so I think we cud be looking at a new era of 1500m-5000m running with world records crumbling down. I'd like to see the 1 mile record improve cause I'm old school now ha ha, anyone know what his pb is for 800m n 1 mile? Be interesting to know his 400m PB too? My guess wud 47.5ish?

Next year he will run down on about 3.27.20 - 3.27.50, 4 ore 5'th personal records in the world. But in 2022, he will probably go down on the 2.26 some place. What the future will bring for Jacob is completely impossible to say. But if he stays free from major injuries, then it is not impossible that it will be a young Norwegian who has the world record, and again, it is completely impossible to say what Jakob is compatible with running at a 1500 meters. I hope and maybe think that he will manage to set a world record one day, if he has the right training and attitude, and does not become an arrogant person, something he is not

I think Jakob has the potential to run sub-13 if his coach decides to put him in a 5k on the track any time soon. To compare him to Cheptegei is a bit far fetched for me though. We just witnessed him lay down an other-worldly time of 12:35, and Jakob is far from that. As I've said before, Jakob's event, at least for the time being, is the 1500m.

The commentary about this very talented young man is too optimistic! He has yet to win a medal in the world championship. IF injury does not hurt his chances and IF no one more talented arises he might be a future Olympic and World Championship gold medalist. Two IF's!! With increased technology and better training it is very likely that he will be surpassed by someone new within the next five ti ten years. Sadly with history as a guide on athletic injuries, the odds of him having no major injuries over the next five to ten years is probably very low.
