The Untold Story of the Blue Angels Visit to Moscow with John "Gucci" Foley | NEW INTERVIEW

Blue Angel Phantoms

In what was once thought to be an impossibility, the Blue Angels made history in 1992 by becoming the first United States flight team to fly over the skies of Moscow, Russia. The momentous visit served as a way to ease tensions between the once Cold War rivals. The Team’s trip to the former Soviet Union was highlighted by two air shows and a ride exchange between the Blue Angels and pilots from the Russian Knights Aerobatic Flight Team.
The significance of these events were not lost on the Blue Angels’ Lead Solo Pilot, John “Gucci” Foley, who joins this episode of Blue Angel Phantoms to share insights and behind the scenes stories from that now famous ‘92 European tour, as well as his naval career that spanned 17 years and saw him ascend to the rank of Commander.
In this brand new interview, Gucci candidly dives into his navy experience and opens the discussion with his upbringing as a German born army brat and the influence his father had on him to pursue a military career. It was during this same time period that Foley attended a Blue Angels air show and proclaimed to his father that one day he too would be a military aviator.
True to his word, Foley applied to the military academies but was initially rejected for having too much protein in his urine. Not one to quit, he attended University of Colorado for his freshman year of college before successfully transferring to the United States Naval Academy where he graduated in 1982.
With a desire to fly with an F/A-18 Hornet squadron, Foley was selected for jet training at NAS Chase Field in Beeville, Texas. However, after receiving his Wings of Gold in 1984, and in alignment with the needs of the Navy, Foley would initially be assigned to Attack Squadron 22 (VA-22) flying the A-7 Corsair II. Disappointed with the assignment at the time, Foley now reflects that the three years he spent flying the A-7 were critical in his development as a Navy pilot.
Aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) Foley and VA-22 deployed to the Western Pacific, Mediterranean and Indian Ocean in 1986 and later to the Persian Gulf in 1988. It was during these deployments that Foley received the Top Nugget Award for first-tour pilots in Carrier Air Wing Eleven, and was also recognized as one of the “Top 10” of all air wing pilots.
Upon returning from the Persian Gulf, Foley transferred to Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101 (VMFAT-101) based in El Toro, California, where he served as an F/A-18 Hornet flight instructor pilot and landing signal officer.
It was during his tour with VMFAT-101 that Foley submitted an application and pursued a position with the Blue Angels that was almost derailed when he accidentally deployed live ordinance from his aircraft on a training exercise. Grounded by his commanding officer and his letter of recommendation revoked, Foley openly shared his lessons learned from the mishap during his interview with the Blue Angels and was selected as the Team’s narrator for the 1990 air show season.
Foley would enjoy a three year tenure with the Blue Angels that would see him progress from the team’s narrator to a position in the demonstration as a solo pilot. Having developed a strong bond with his opposing solo, Ken Switzer, for the 1992 season, the two explored implementing new maneuvers including the Section High Alpha Pass and the Solo Section Take-Off. Both maneuvers are now featured in the demonstration that Blue Angels perform today.
During 1992 season, the Blue Angels traveled to Europe for the first time since 1973 to perform 16 air shows in 8 different countries including Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, England, Spain, Italy, Finland and Sweden.
As if it happened yesterday, Foley fondly reflects on a flight he gave to his Russian counterpart that rendered his new comrade unconscious during a demonstration of high performance capabilities of the F/A-18 Hornet. This was after the two had a strained pre-flight brief on the tarmac that was famously documented in the film “The Blue Angels: Around the World at the Speed of Sound”.
Today, Foley is a high performance keynote speaker that helps both corporations and individuals reach their full capabilities through lesions he learned while flying with the Blue Angels.

“Gucci” truly an honor to serve with you as my MO at “Fist of the Fleet” 25. By the way, I keep your flight jacket, you presented to me when I got promoted to Chief! Thanks to your leadership I retired as an LDO. Sadly we lost Gunner Warburton in 2021.

I lived in Moscow for 3 months Dec 74 - Mar 75 as a Sea Bee attached to the US Embassy. We actually lived in town closer to the Kremlin than we were to the Embassy. That was hands down the highlight of my Navy career. I had a blast. We stood out like sore thumbs in American clothes. But far and away, the average Soviet citizen was very nice to us.

Fun stuff! I was in the USSR in 1990, in a store I was told I couldn't buy something unless I had military ID. Oh OK. The look in her eyes when she realized she was holding US. Navy ID made me laugh out loud. NYET!!! Hehe. Went on too become a bee myself.

The little boy who watched the blue angels and achieved his dreams and still can be a regular guy. One of the very most elite pilots to attain the pinnacle of their lives. I am sure no amount of words can actually describe the luck, joy, and experience he had experienced in his lifetime, but he tries. When you're that great it's hard to be humble lol. It's a joy listening to him. We're actually still listening to that little boy. All my respect and envy Gucci :D

My dad was a Navy flight engineer in a PBY Albatross in Pennascola during WWII. He was a sub hunter. He was age 18 when he joined when the war was nearly over. But I'm so proud of his service that I became Navy by default. His reserve home base was Floydd Bennett Field He brought home his Navy handheld microphone and headset and kept them in a safe place. He would show them to me occasionally. I've seen similar equipment in WWII movies and I used to say to myself, "hey my dad has the same ones". I became a fan of the Blues as I grew up. After college in 1974 I signed up to fly around 1975 but other aviators were coming home from the View Nam war. I remember going for my flight physical at Lakewood Navel Air Station only to be confronted with disgrunted aviators returning from Viet Nam complaining that they were getting very little, if any flying time. When that didn't work out, I went on and earned a J.D. degree. I wish had had joining the JAGs or NCIS but life didn't take me down that road. I love the Navy and I admire the pilots as some of the best in the world. Can I honesty say they are better than the Air Force pilots? Well, not really unless airforce pilots can land their F-16 on a boat the size of a postage stamp during a storm. Anyway I love the Blue Angels and how precise they are. Go Navy.

Moffett Field in the early 1980's had P3's in the pattern, 500 feet above our house, every 30 minutes, 7 days a week, coming in to land. I'll never forget being up on my roof during a Blue Angel show, and watching that jet coming in LOW, upright and rock steady, and then flipping inverted right in front of me. It was easily one of the coolest things that I've experienced in my 60 years. I'll never forget it. Gucci is a bad ass - and he was well interviewed, sir!

@chaspfrank
@chaspfrank Год назад
Shorn's interview was great. What was really amazing was that his explanation of the demo that went bad was a major reason for his final selection by the Blues. He did not defend the mistake, but owned it and explained what he learned from it. It was exactly the attitude the Blues were looking for.

MY 1st time seeing The Blue Angel's show was on a Beta tape console before we started to transfer to VHS which was of course never going to replace a Beta system. CDs were not going to replace VHS! the rest is history watching this on RU-vid and this brings me back to my own thoughts about how to become a member of the Blue Angel's! Except I didn't have 20/20 vision and there wasn't any surgery to correct eyesight in my time to be considered a pilot in the military period... Instant treas😮ore finding this podcast subscribed for life! Thank you for sharing this amazing show that brings me back to making more memories with the BA's with interviews like Gucci! He has a amazing personality that will make anyone feel like a child again without having to use tapes to using scotch tape to record shows back in the day where you had to be able to continue with updating the supposed unupdated Systems from Beta and on! A buddy of mine who I haven't seen in too long, Steve "Moj" Johnson, was an A-6 B/N and Larry "Fudge" Packer was his pilot. Fudge went to F-18s, and ended up flying Blue Angel #2 at the same time Gucci was #5. We saw the Blues several times in that period (I have an "8-man" with them taken in El Paso), including once when Fudge had to divert to PAFB with a problem. We took the flight crew from Fat Albert out to lunch while his bird was being fixed. As far as call signs go, another buddy of mine's son in law, USMC, flew F-18s at Iwakuni. There was a pilot in the squadron who got the call sign "InDef". It stands for Interior Defecator. Apparently based on two incidents, both alcohol related of course, one of which was in a hotel in Guam. Oh, female pilot BTW...

I flew the F-14 from '84-'87 and the Tomcat was too big to look good in close diamond formation. The cost of operating it in a team would have been very expensive also. The Tomcat doesn't have ailerons and so is not nearly as maneuverable in the roll axis as the A-4 or the F-18. In my opinion, the A-4 was the perfect airplane for the Blue Angel mission. It's shape and size really was ideal for the diamond formation.

You can't be a pilot because you don't have 20-20 vision." I was born with amblyopia. But for that, I WOULD HAVE become a Naval Aviator, and a Blue Angels pilot. Had to settle for enlisting in an Aviation Electronics rating. If I couldn't fly 'em, I made sure I could be around 'em.

I have watched the Thunderbirds and the Blues this year and here are my thoughts... First - the last two times I have watched the Thunderbirds (Fargo and Duluth) they were unable to put up six aircraft, both shows were 5 airplanes and in both shows they were already flying the spare (one of the five aircraft was the B model in both). The Thunderbirds show is a little disjointed with spaces of inactivity during the show. Also, the white color of the aircraft can sometimes get lost in the sky (especially on a cloudy day). They did however do a 3 ship 30 degree pass (I was parked on the opposite side of the field) where I could look right into the cockpit (that was awesome). I was suprised by the number of manuvers that were done without afterburner (this is probably on purpose) but left me with a "that was just okay" opinion. Okay - now I know this isn't fair but I was able to go to Pennsacola for last years final show of the year on the beach (thank you wife) and it was AWESOME! Over the water, the show, the sound, the smell... OMG! Six jets up, the demo perfected, it was incredible... Sorry AF but they nailed it! It was loud, it was constant action, my blood pressure still goes up thinking about it. The only thing I wish they would have done is a final two ship solo pass down low and fast to say goodbye. When it was over I turned to my wife and said "just glad to be here" she of course thought I was a dork (situation normal). With that said... I have to make one final comment - the F22 demo was OFF THE CHARTS cool. That aircraft is big, loud, and unbelievable in every way... I have seen it twice now doing the demo and every time I keep saying "you can't do that in an airplane". Thanks for the podcast!!! Great stories and appreciate the opportunity to learn more about the trip to Moscow.

Was the flight with the Russian that Gucci referenced captured on video? Would love to have seen the low level pass over the Russian flight line!

Until the trip to Moscow, the Boss was always a Commander, 0-5. Greg was promoted to Captain, 0-6, so he would the same rank as the Russian team leader. The Boss has always been a Captain, ever since.
