Historians Ruth Goodman, Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn bring back to life the golden age of steam, exploring how Victorian railways helped to shape modern Britain.
In this episode, the team explores how the steam railways revolutionized passenger travel in Britain. They learn about the early passenger wagons, the lives of the railway navvies, and the impact of the railways on other industries. They also experience the different aspects of train travel in the early days, from the refreshment rooms to the cardsharps.

Ok. Alex is an archeologist on Time Team and the other 2 were in a documentary about restoring a very very old castle using ancient technology. Not even a modern shovel! Lol

The comfort level between First and Third is stunning. What was the price difference and why is there no Second? Thanks

There used to be a second class, but eventually regulations and customer demands made it where it was just more financially viable to do away with third class and just do second. That eventually became coach class. The difference was basically like the price difference of a Toyota Camry and a Rolls Royce on some railroads.
