she didn't "break away" from their traditions. She didn't grow up in their house, she grew up with her mother. Her mother isn't a fundamentalist so obviously Amy wasn't raised that way. There is nothing for her to break away from.
Amy seemed like the only one who wasn't repressed by the family. Free to have her own personality, dreams, decisions, socializing with people outside her family, and so on. I like her, she was fun and brought life to the show. I do think the Duggar family has the best of intentions, but don't see how sheltering your children to that degree is harmful. I've found that kids who are not exposed (age appropriately) to reality often swing the opposite way. I think Josh's behavior was a good indication of that.

I am a Christian and I can say not all Christians are like the duggars. I still like the duggars but some of their rules are a little over the top. I believe in waiting till marriage but I don't think you have to wait to kiss or hold hands until marriage. I agree with Amy that you can't just marry the first guy that comes along (there are cases where people will only date one person and that ends up being the person they marry I'm not saying that it can't happen) I dated other guys before I got engaged, that way I knew what I was and wasn't looking for in a husband.

I live in a Christian household and I am allowed to go on dates without a chaperone, kiss before marriage, and so on I think it might be if you live in a household that strict kids will rebel either that or my sister and I aren't like that.

You became of age at 18. You are an adult now. Get a job, save your money & get out asap! Then get in school as soon as you can. You can probably get most of your education paid for, since you will be on your own, without their parental help, if you are going against their wishes & beliefs. This kind of control is not normal. It is definitely child abuse & now, it is abuse of an adult since you are 19. Go to the authorities & get them involved to save your siblings & yourself if you have to. Talk to some of your other relatives or close friends in confidence that do not live like this. They may be able to help you get a plan to get out. Being controlled as an adult, not allowed to think for yourself or make your own decisions, is not legal in this country. You are not property! You are a beautiful person that has been restricted from having a normal life due to your parent's religious cult choices, not your own. This is not Christianity, this is total control & restriction! Keeping you restricted prevented you from growing as a person by not being able to go to public school, make your own friends, play sports, be exposed to the arts, wear clothes that you like, go to the college of your choice, get an education & live your own life as a responsible female. They also prevented you from dating like a normal teenager, going to high school prom, having a boyfriend or even a few different boyfriends by the age of 19. Those are all the things that normal teens do as they grow up so that they are prepared for life's stages in the adult world. They have kept you from being able to develop your own personality, prevented you from seeing your strengths & weaknesses, failed to expose you to all there is in this great life! You are not an adult robot that should think & act as you are told, but an adult female that should be in her first or second year of college, studying for your future & dating someone that you like because it's whom you choose, not because your parents picked him out from their religious cult. I hope you are not having to raise your siblings like the Dugger older children, since you did not bring them into the world. You are a 19 year old teenager, who's siblings are your parent's children & responsibility. Do not marry into this religious cult because you will be stuck with a man that thinks he owns you & he will have complete control over you. If you have no education & cannot support yourself, you will not be able to get out, if the need arises. He will always have control because you will not be able to support yourself without an education. With knowledge, there is power! This gives you the power to be a great team player in a relationship or marriage, but not be stepped on like a doormat. Best of luck with starting your new life! It will be tough, but you can do it! Get out & don't ever repeat the pattern when you have your own children, after you get your education! My parents gave my siblings & I so much opportunity & encouraged us to be anything that we wanted to become. I have done the same with my children & they have made me so proud to be their mom. Make sure you let them know what you have been through & what you were restricted from experiencing because they can help & guide you in the right direction for your personal growth. I have helped a few friends get out of these bad situations where their parents were abusing them. In some cases, it was verbal abuse & total control. In other cases, it was verbal, physical & sexual abuse & keeping them away from society, all in the name of a cult religion that the father believed in & the children had to be submissive to. The children all got out, are receiving therapy, love living with their Grandmother & going to school. The disgusting man that was their father is now in jail & may he rot there! There is always hope! Your situation may not be anything this bad, but if you are being controlled by your parent's religious beliefs at the age of 19, not allowed to date, wear what you want within reason, wear makeup, drive a car, go to school, get a job, go out with friends & be a normal 19 year old, then you are being controlled against your will, which is illegal. Doing these things doesn't mean that you do not believe in God & that you are not a Christian. Being forced to live a life of strict religious rules & submission doesn't make someone a Christian, only makes the people being restricted miserable, stared at, bullied, and praying to God for a way out, just to be normal. Personally, I had my share of sexual relationships before I was married, but I wouldn't wish that upon anyone. I would tell any young girl or guy to wait and give your virginity to someone who is committing to you for life. Secondly, know that marriage is not just some fairy tale romance story, it is dying to self for the sake of the family unit. It takes patience, sacrifice, and commitment. The two shall become one flesh. It's a beautiful thing and worth waiting for.
Virginity is a social construct. Sex isn't inherently good or bad. It's just something people do in pursuit of physical pleasure and to reproduce of course. Technically, waiting for marriage is unnatural because marriage itself unnatural. It's a social institution and necessary for finacial security in today's society. I'm not saying you shouldn't wait for marriage if that's your individual choice, but advising people what to do is sending the wrong message. Parents should equip their children with knowledge of what a healthy sexual relationship would consitute. Children should be taught birth control methods and the importance of getting tested for STDs and STIs to ensure safe sex. People should learn to make their own decisions regarding what they want to do with their bodies. If you know what a healthy relationship is (sexual or not) and you have a healthy sense of self-worth this will allow a person to make their own choice about when and who to have sex with (hopefully with a partner who is a respectful and decent human being) and that experience should be a good experience. Of course, consent is important, and children should also be taught about consent and having autonomy over their own bodies.
