I have seen them at Riot Fest and it was a great show…but then I worked a side hustle and came through the VIP gate with half the group and torn off wristbands…I honestly didn’t know who they were, but they sure let me know and that they were there to cancel…then I realized they were supposed to be playing… like then! They were pretty mean/f’d up, but rock on 🤘🏽 I helped them.
I never met Isaac Brock. Here's my story about never meeting Isaac Brock: I was born into this world. Heard a band called Modest Mouse, and I never met the singer--whose name is Isaac Brock.
Modest Mouse has been my favorite band since I was 13. I'm 34 now. The first song I ever heard was Neverending Math Equation in a bmx video. It totally changed my perspective on life.
Duuuude same. Well, almost same-so..similar. First song I fell in love with was 3rd Planet (or Trailer Trash.. or Cowboy Dan😂) when I was about 8. Quickly felt more and more captivated with every song I heard, particularly on that album. My aunt is who turned me onto them and I have a vivid memory of every single time “Doin’ The Cockroach” came on we would drop to the floor, lying on our backs, with our arms and legs above us flailing like a cockroach stuck on its back. 😂🥹 Anyway, i didn’t listen to “Never Ending Math Equation” until I was around 12 and I just listened to it on repeat for hours at a time. Modest Mouse played a big part in my philosophy on life, death, existing, ‘God’, and religion.
My first song was at 14 and now I'm 35! It was fruit that ate itself. My brother played it in the car. Same huge change in perspective/confirmation of things.
Such a good song I'm the same as I was when I was 6 years old And oh my God I feel so damn old I don't really feel anything On a plane, I can see the tiny lights below And oh my God, they look so alone Do they really feel anything? I feel that Lyric! Great first song to discover MM
Me as well. These guys own the top spot of my S-Class music shelf. The music transformed the way I look at the world several times and I continue to fall deeper in love with them every year. I couldn't pick a favorite, cuz it changes every year or two, but Dashboard was my first love.
I briefly got to meet Isaac Brock once, I believe back in 2018. Had to stay around the venue at a concert in Charlotte until about 2 AM, but it was absolutely worth it. In the way that you assume you might struggle to find something to say to your heroes, when you realize you're actually going to get to meet them, I grasped for some words and came out with the fact that, The Moon and Antarctica was extremely helpful for me getting over my father's death when I was 20. He responded by a saying, he just became a father and he certainly hopes that he would be around for more than 20 years of his daughter's life. Man the world has really gotten fucking weird since then... I miss seeing Modest Mouse live.
I enjoyed reading your story. You are very articulate and it was a wonder for me to read in such a short but concise paragraph. In what must have been such a extremely meaningful moment for you given your circumstance. I'm sorry you lost your father so soon. He must be so proud of you for finding the strength to carry on in his absence. 😁
@@melloyellogsxr Hey, thanks so much for the response! I certainly never expect someone's response on RU-vid to make me smile quite as much as this one did today. Or ever really for that matter, usually people go out of their way to be jerks, not to be kind. It's great to know that someone actually took the time to read my word vomit, and incredible seeing that someone actually thought it worthy of a well thought-out response. Thank you for being a stellar human :)
The best part about these stories--they're just the tip of the Antarctic iceberg. I've seen Modest Mouse 8 times and each show has had its own unique and crazy happenings.
Hey! I’ve seen them 8 times too! First time was ‘96 at the black cat in d.c. Favorite show was at a spot in Lancaster called the chameleon club. Most memorable was Red Rocks!!
I saw them in I think 2011 and the crowd was really weak because it was like early afternoon and they played mostly new material at the time that no one knew and they got pretty upset with the crowd. Was probably the worst show I've ever been to tbh. I'd definitely check them out again though if I get the chance.
i saw them only twice. first time in Barcelona, at primavera. the set / sounds wasn't as good. but brock wore this eyepatch the entire set. he lifted it up for a second and he had a huge black eye. Classic Brock some years slater saw them in Amsterdam. they were huge and didn't expect too much tbh, except that they'd play "whale song" which was on repeat (they played it). they started the set with "first world planet" and half of the set were older classics. i had a drink and somebody offered me mdma, so i was a bit enthusiast and yelled along with a random dude for "custom concern". i hate people yelling for songs, but yeah. the crowd was huge, and Isaac caught our eyes when he heard us yelling. He mumbled sure, and started playing it. Half of the band stood around as it's guitar + bass + drum. The entire set was so good, and this show remains of my favorite shows until today.
One of my fav moments on the internet is from super old footage of a show in my home town in okc in 1997 I believe, where he’s asking the crowd for a knife and started cutting himself on stage. (Self harm isn’t cool at all, BUT it was def rock n roll asf ). My fav personal experience was them playing a surprise show at that same small venue in 2008 (they were huge then) and they started the show with ‘Never Ending Math Equation’ (one of their best songs) and then Isaac smashed the shit out of his guitar, handed it to the crowd and continued a really great show. Me and my friend waited for them to come out after the show and they came out way later and Isaac was like “ah, I don’t really wanna ..” and my super duper young and very drunk ass was like “aww cmon man! I spent 100’s of dollars to see y’all” (which wasn’t cool to say, but I was a kid) but he was like “oh alright just a few minutes’ and talked with us for a bit, then everyone ran up and started hounding him. Felt bad, but he was very cool for that.
This band has been my crutch for the past 22 years. Modest mouse is literally a part of my life. Not a day goes by that I don’t listen to at least one song and know all the lyrics as well. Top 3: 1) stars are projectors 2) 3rd planet 3) teeth like god shoeshine Those my top 3 thanks for more info on them as well. 🖤
The first time I saw Modest Mouse IB complained a bunch about how low the volume was, then played a 15 minute version of Tiny Cities Made of Ashes before breaking some of their equipment and walking off in a huff. I was sold.
I actually got to meet Issac Brock, he was performing where I live and I just got out of the mental health ward and my sister bought me tickets to go see them His music helped me learn how to better myself and express myself through my own art and music and even my old band did covers of king rat and Bukowski, even to this day I still cry every time I listen to interstate 8 and the album building nothing out of something, it’s been a long journey for me and I’m happy I chose life over ending it all
Seems like the "untold" story of Modest Mouse is INCREDIBLY well-documented - you could even call it "told" - by Newsweek, AV Club, BuzzFeed, Studio 360, and SPIN Magazine
What a lot of folks don’t know about modest mouse is that cowboy Dan is a major player in the cowboy scene. He goes to the reservation, drinks and gets mean .
Once upon a time in the year 2000 I walked into a little dive bar of a venue called the Orpheum in Ybor City, Fl. That might feature a little band called Modest Mouse touring their Moon and Antarctica LP. Turned out they were really F’n good and proceeded to blow my 21 year old mind.
I literally hit the back of a police car once, and it was all ok! I jumped out and checked on him immediately. Thats when I realized it was a cop. Not much more than a scratch, so he drove off and it was all ok :)
I would be totally satisfied with life in general, if I could write a song that's one quarter as good as "Blame it on the Tetons". While it and shoeshine have gotta be my favorites, their entire catalog is fantastic
I used to know them for Float On because my guitar teacher taught it to me. I saw them live in 2021 and they were amazing, and it got me listening to them and knowing their music more. RIP Jeremiah
Love Modest Mouse ever since I first heard Float On, I listened to their back catalogue and I was hooked. Been listening ever since. Side note, if you you dig blue grass and modest mouse, look into a band called Iron Horse. They did a whole album of modest mouse covers and it’s fantastic. Some of the covers I like even better than the originals 😬.
Favorite band since 2004 and it's gonna stay that way till I die! I saw Isaac after a show once and said, "I saw you in the past and-" he interrupted me and said "I have no future and I have no past."
The Mark on the Wall reference is a often mentioned one - there's also the 19th century Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, whose personality reminds me a bit of Isaac Brock. Wish I could ask the guy if it's just a coincidence. Anyway, I hope Modest Mouse gets considered as a legendary band like a lot of those early rock bands are nowadays - Eric Judy, Jeremiah Green, and Isaac are three criminally underrated musicians on their respective instruments. Isaac's style on guitar is pure inventiveness and imagination - Jeremiah's drumming is so flexible and constant that it almost has a fluid consistency to it as he rolls effortlessly with the rest of the band or takes the reigns on his own - and Eric is probably the most underrated of the bunch, just go listen to some isolated bass lines off their earlier stuff like Breakthrough, where he's showing the same inventiveness as Isaac - his bass lines often bleeding over to where you can't easily tell what's bass and what's guitar - and even later on when the distinction is more clear he's coming up with some downright funky stuff.
I saw them for the first time recently at a music festival. The Strokes were headlining for the night so I wasn’t expecting much from Modest Mouse, just was going to watch them beforehand but they actually put on an awesome high energy show.
Shaky knees? They were awesome! From my experience, they can be hit or miss in a festival setting but that was the best festival performance I’ve seen from them. Their current setup/lineup sounds very tight I think they recently slimmed down the number of band members
I'm from Detroit and I used to hang out with John Sinclair. He used to frequent a weekly drum circle that I went to. The two of us became pretty close and we would often get into intense conversations about politics, race and philosophy. He's a really enlightened kind of person and very easy to talk to if he respects your mindset. I was a little starstruck the first time that I met him, but his personality makes you very at ease very quickly. Still, it blows my mind that I am somebody born in the late 80s who has a friend that John Lennon wrote a song about. That's freaking wild. I love Detroit.
plus all of this shit you’ve told us is nothing new to true die hard MM FANS. idk who this video was aimed for because all of these untold truths have already been told. like i said this is high school level school essay report project
I’ve been jamming out to MM for years. I never knew the story behind the band’s name nor half the shenanigans Isaac Brock got into. Thanks for sharing stories!
“No person how ever modest, could detest the use of a brilliant mouse. Lay not upon him the rules of the house, know them that dwell here are modest…..damn messed that up..
I saw them for the first time in Burlington in October of 2015 on an entire smorgasbord of substances. All I can say 7 years later is....wow. my grandmother died a month later (rather suddenly) and I feel in my heart and soul that I was meant to see that show as a precursor to what was coming.
Jesus christ. I've always been obsessed with Modest Mouse and now I think it was completely subconscious...my best friend told me my mom had been married twice before my dad in the lunch room in like...7th grade? That was the most frustrating feeling I can remember...sorry, not super relevant...but just got hit in the face a little bit.
Shit man, stalkers and all that crap, time wasters wasting time, shit times. I can't deny I'd love to meet Isaac, if only to gauge if he is as screwed up as I am, and his level of tolerance for Scotch, and to kick him in the shins for publishing my unwritten diary in his songs. I'm sure it would be as underwhelming for him as the rest of the world. But like they say, never turn hobbies into jobs (fkin mentalist stalkers!)...
7:00 There's an entire unreleased song about the incident called "Jawbreaker" (go figure) WELL THEY BROKE MY JAW AND I WAS LEFT TO THAW, I WALKED AWAY AND I CALLED MY MA I SAID HELL YEAH IT SUCKED YEAH I LOVED IT BREAK MY JAW NOW
Excellent video as always 👍🏼👍🏼💯💯🙏🙏 did you ever or can you do one on people in planes? I haven’t heard about or anything from them in years, it’s driving me crazy 🤣🤣😩
I heard different. I was under the impression the name came from speech classes Isaac took due his speech impediment where they had him repeat the words modest mouse to improve
Grunge you did a pretty good job. However I never said anything like that about Grace Gospel Church. First of all it was not a commune. You have mixed that up with Great Oaks. That was the commune.
Huh, guess I can say that me and the vocalist of my favorite band both have had our jaws broken from a punch. I say that as I currently have my jaw wired shut - not fun.
1994 to 2000 modest mouse is my favorite music ever Long drive Interstate 8 Lonesome crowded west Building nothing out of something Moon and Antarctica Modest mouse and built to spill have parallel careers
They definitely do...they were both had early releases on Up records based in Seattle . And I could not agree more about 1994 - 2000 Modest Mouse. Brilliant music
