@@DetroitLives313 no they didn't but Diana did f a lot of Motown family members...Barry Gordy, Eddie Kendericks, and a few others. She tried Smokey but Claudette whipped that @$$
@La Jo Oh YES they did! Diane not only did the very married Smokey Robinson, but also did the very married Berry Gordy Jr. and the very married Eddie Holland (who's wife Doris kicked Ross' ass outside of the 20 Grand nightclub in Detroit). Eddie Kendricks' wife said that Ross came beating on their door one night and tried to break in to see Eddie. (Check out the Unsung episode on Eddie Kendricks and let her explain it). She did Richard Street that later joined the Temptations and whole host of others! LOL!!! Oh yeah, she was a very busy little beaver back in those days. She would even rub it in Claudette's face and if you want proof of that, go listen the "Diana Ross & the Supremes Farewell" album. It is a live album and at one point Diana Ross says to Claudette Robinson "go on, show him (Smokey) how much I love him........". Now everyone at Motown and that were around them in Detroit knew about them playing on the side. Claudette was way too nice of a young lady and never beat Diana up. Several people did have to beat her up including Eddie Holland's wife, Florence Ballard and others..........
Smokey is a survivor, that’s the quality of him that I most admire, He is still standing while many others have fallen!!! Salute to him and all of his success
Smokey Robinson has had his problems like many did then and now, but he changed it all because he chose life and made the right decision, his life is better for it. God is speaking to everyone, we just need to listen, and life won't be so complicated. Sometimes we are the last one to know that something is wrong! Good for you Smokey!❤️
wow!!! I saw Smokey about 4years ago in concert, on my birthday he was fabulous!! Just great, I think I'll go to my youtube playlist and listen to some Smokey Robinson yeah!! 💯🙂
I attended his concert a few years ago .. My God that man has a golden voice ... His voice is so smooth and still hits those notes! CRUISIN IS MY FAVORITE SONG by Smokey.
Nothing I didn't already know. Smokey is the greatest songwriter of all time with a catalogue of over 3000 songs and a smooth singer whose hits of over 50 years ago are just now getting the appreciation they deserve.
that's not age that's a mountain of plastic surgery!!! just take a look at an early photo of him, and then at a later one...he's had everything done!! he looks embalmed to me.
I was always impressed with the purity, the simplicity of his rhymes. The words just naturally fit together so beautifully. He's my favorite Motown artist.
Are you serious? Where did you dream up that nonsense? Smokey is definitely everything you say he is not and much much more. Maybe you don't appreciate him, but tens of millions do love, admire and respect him for all of his accomplishments.
U know what this is about the third time that I seen the word underrated used in the wrong context on RU-vid.somebody said Will Smith was underrated rapper yet he won four grammys been nominated eight time and he was doing it part time.shia laBeof being an underrated actor yet he was part of the transformers and Indiana Jones and wall Street movie franchises how in the hell are u underrated and ur chosen to do that? Please don't get me started on all the chart topping hits he wrote for the miracles and other legendary artists we could frickin be on RU-vid all day .hes in the songwriter's hall of fame ,the George Gershwin songwriter's contribution to popular music award.and inducted into the rock and roll Hall of Fame how in the heck are u underrated with those accomplishments also go and try to record one of his songs and c if u can do it for free? Underrated means when u do something and good at it and don't recognized as much .I think ur using the word in the wrong context put that label on somebody else not this legendary icon
I don't know where you got this idea. I've never had anything but the highest love and respect for Smokey. This is one of the few artists that stops me in my tracks when he's on TV. 'Being with you' was rather soft, but I loved the album. It's not like me to love a soft album.
I never knew how prolific Smokey's writing has been and especially finding out he wrote "My Girl". It had to be one the best songs by Motown and the Temptations did a perfect job with it. That's how humble Smokey is that I had never known that he had written it. What an outstanding human being!
Everybody always talks about The Temptations’ “My Girl” and Mary Wells “My Guy” . But, according to Rolling Stone Magazine, “The Greatest Motown Song of All Time” is NEITHER of these. In their recent list of “The 100 Greatest Motown Songs of All Time” , the song that took the #1 Position was.. “THE TRACKS OF MY TEARS” by THE MIRACLES !! THE MIRACLES are The Most-Covered Motown Act of All Time. They ALSO have the Most Grammy Hall of Fame-Inducted Songs of ANY Motown Group They are also the ONLY Motown Group where all its members (except Claudette) are ASCAP and/or BMI Award-Winning Songwriters. They also have the MOST-SONGS inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of “The 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll, and are the HIGHEST-RANKED MOTOWN GROUP on Rolling Stone’s list of “The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.” Not The Supremes, Not The Temptations, Not The J-5 or Commodores….THE MIRACLES. “Other Groups may be COOL…but THE MIRACLES RULE!!”
I absolutely love Smokey Robinson!! My favorite songs by him are “Quiet Storm” and “Being with you”. It’s so interesting how he got the name “Smokey” via his favorite uncle Claude. Smokey is a very talented artist and an amazing song writer 💜🙏🏿
@Carrie's helping guide to you being a women When I was a kid, we would see Smokey and a couple of the Miracles roller skating at the rink right down street from my house! He is a VERY regular guy with extraordinary talent. He could have easily been a successful comedian. He is so funny with the stories he tells.
*"Smokey and his Miracle"* on a Spiritual note, Smokey was hooked on drugs and was encouraged to enter therapy rehab, he testified about a Prayer he prayed and GOD instantly healed him of his addiction to never do drugs again.
I say Smokey at a free Stern Grove concert about 7 years ago. I had never seen that size crowd there before. The concert was great. Everyone was so happy. Strangers were singing Smokey 's songs to each other like old friends. The elders were all carefully watched over and enjoyed like you would your own grandparents. No negative energy the entire time. None. Smokey laughed, shared many stories, and sang like an Angel. Better than his records. Smokey was bending and sustaining notes and chords and his smile never left his face, nor ours. Its easy to forget how great he is as a singer until you see him live and sing along with him. He makes it look effortless.
# SmokeyRobinson is #1, in my book. One of the most talented songwriters I've ever heard. Not to mention a magnificent human being. I love this guy. His music says it all!!! He's the BEST!!!
I've always loved Smokey Robinson. He's very talented, charming and just a genius. He wrote so many wonderful songs that will live in my heart and soul. The memories of all the people that I love, especially Gloria, my best friend! 💗 I haven't forgotten you. 🕊🕊🕊🕊
I grew up during the Mowtown era. I remember when we did not want to hear anything by the Temptations, their songs were terrible, and then Smokey wrote: The way you do things you do featuring Eddie Kendricks on lead, after that everything the Temps touched turned to gold.
Video was great 👍🏽! I love Smokey! He hasn’t aged much either! He is a handsome man!!! Those beautiful GREEN EYES would hypnotized me!!! His music is way before my time, but that’s ok, I’m still a fan!! He is one older man that “CAN GET IT “!!!!
@@derichestt that's one of the most ridiculous, nonsensical statements i have ever heard. it makes no sense whatsoever, and smokey was FAR from being the "greatest (anything) of all time" he was good, but the greatest? LOL!! i can name for you at least six Motown writers that put smokey to shame. underrated? maybe OVERrated, but certainly not underrated.
@@maryruggiero2884 and who are those six writers. You have no idea what you're talking about. Smokey ......before he became vice president was the straw that stirred the drink in Motown. He wrote hits for the temptations Mary wells Brenda holloway the four tops the marvelettes Michael Jackson as well as his own group the miracles. No other writer .....or tandem of writers I'm Motown were as prolific writing for others.
Always loved Smokey..I would play the singles and albums endlessly..When I first heard "The Tracks of My Tears" I went around singing it. I was driving in my car with my girlfriend and singing it before she had heard it on the radio. . She was blown away and asked where did I get THAT song..I said, "I wrote it." "WOW!" she said.. A couple days later she heard Smokey on the radio, and tried to crack me for tricking her, but I ran away.
Now, you see, one might be tempted to think that's because the lyric hits a nerve and raises some uncomfortable memories. I'm not sure not, but it is one of those "we've all been there" lyrics :-)
I don't like the music, I think it's droll and I actually DON'T like his voice!!!!! It makes me cringe. If it's any consolation, I don't like Barry White's voice either, and really cringe when people say more babies were conceived to Barry White than any other singer! @@shanewright2772
I thought that too before I heard daylight and darkness and let me be the clock and satisfaction and baby come close and quiet storm see where I'm going.
I have loved the sound of Smokey Robinson's voice since I was 6yrs old and was allowed to stay in my older sister's room if I was quiet. It wasn't until I was 14yrs old that I actually saw him perform and fell instantly in love with the man that owned the voice that I had loved so long. I make a point of seeing Smokey perform at least once every year and have never been disappointed with his shows. A little disappointed that no mention of his gospel recording and success of that cd from 2004 was mentioned at.
Always one of my favourite musicians. Class act all the way!!! Have listened to Motown since the sixties and Smokey is still awesome to this day. Barry Gordie sure knew how to pickem!!! 🇨🇦
I was able to see Smokey only a couple years ago. The concert started out a little rocky, but wow, after the first two songs, he was incredible! I've been a fan for a long time.
I grew up listening to Smokey Robinson and most of the other artists who me Smokey associated with who he called family I've listened to a lot of his interviews and what really touched me was he never had nothing bad to say about anyone only good things he said of they break into my house they better bring something with they that fact that they never knew they were poor because of the love that was in their home only till he moved away that he discovered just how poor they really were he's certainly gifted a God given gift for sure thank you Smokey for bringing your love to my thoughts God bless you Smokey
I have been a Smokey fan since I was 12. That voice is instantly recognized. He is the best and I plan to play his songs at my funeral so they can escort me to the nether regions. Love you Smokey.
Smokey wrote great great songs for Mary Wells .. love her greatest hits. She was also very underrated. Diana Ross had nothing on her but a slender body. Gordy threw Mary over for Diana .. she put out, I guess?
It's amazing how All Of these people know each other! Your environment and parent's support is Invaluable. I had no support, don't know how I made it but with God's help.
Very interesting - thank you very much. As an Aussie l've really only become aware of Smokey in recent years. I became really interested in him when l heard what a wonderful mentor he was for an Australian Group, 'Human Nature' who ironically got a stint at Vegas, doing Motown Music - about a decade ago. He's a delightful man - and now l know he is also an amazing song writer - My Guy, being one of my all time favourite songs.
That man actually started the whole mixed Beautiful eyed man phenomenon. So eat your heart out. Michael Ealy, David Cox, Jesse Williams, Willy Monfret, Jeremy Meeks, Robert Ri`chard, Billy Payne, Ronnie Cash, Shawn Newman, Don Benjamin, Wentworth Miller and The Hodge Twins.
Smokey said his uncle brought him to a baseball game and he was bored so he scribbled on a pad that he always carried a,song called I'll try something new in 15 minutes.
I love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love xxx LOVE. Smokey. My big sister the late Ms. Ann Watkins from St Louis Missouri. Introduce me to Smokey Robinson when I was a little girl the song was going to a Go-Go. And even had a dance for the song. Swept for you baby. Nowadays when I hear Smokey every one of his words is as though my big sister is talking to me. I stopped in the supermarket when I hear Smokey Robinson. I'm like hey Ann.
My absolute fave, we went tonsee him in Las Vegas when he was older and was not dosappointed one bit, fantastic singer, composer, producer, (and one this clip missed) an incredible performer
Great video. I always said that without Smokey Robinson Motown would not have been the Mega Hit Making Machine that it undoubtedly became. Love you Smokey and the class and Beauty that you gave to the PLANET...♥️♥️♥️
Profiles in Pittsburgh Gordie gave the right name for him he was his friend smokey you can tell looking at him he knows how to be a friend and give you a smile bless you Smokey Robinson love you love you love you thank you for showing this video about our great producer writer director of Motown face president Smokey Robinson of Detroit Michigan amen
To be able to write as many songs as Smokey wrote most of which became Big Hits, he had to have a very over active imagination and a lot of ideas that made him and a lot of Artists really Big.
Same as with Barry Gibb and Paul McCartney - they are still writing and creating. I guess it's the life of a true artist, of any type eg painters. They go from one idea to the next.
I was born and raised in Detroit my mom's and Pop's hung out with a lot of people in Motown Barry Gordon did a lot of good things but Barry was kind of scandalous to but in that world sometimes you gots to be cruel let's just put it this way I know one side the world knows another 313 love my city of Detroit!
