When I was a boy, in the 1950s, I lived in northern Kansas, south of Lincoln, NE, where my Aunt lived. We often visited her. After a long day at her house, I'd fall asleep in the backseat on the way home. I always woke up at the state line. Why? Because it seemed like every year, the 'good' road flipped. One year, we'd be cruising along on a smooth road and hit the Kansas washboard. The next year, I'd have finally gotten to sleep on the rough Nebraska highway when the smooth Kansas road would wake me up.

My opinion on the whole suburbia thing: It's good that the interstate system allowed a variety of styles of housing, but the issue comes in when it is the vast majority of housing getting built. They're also poorly designed in the US and I feel they intentionally hinder people with cul-de-sacs and windy roads. Services are harder to reach, and cars are a necessity for many areas and just add to the cost of living. I feel they could be improved if they weren't so spread out and if they stuck with a grid pattern, and if they make sure it's not endless sprawl and has services accessible by walking or cycling.
@travelfiftystates314
@travelfiftystates314 Год назад
I totally agree. Suburbs are definitely not necessarily a bad thing in and of themselves and can really be a big positive. Unfortunately most of them are just very poorly designed and car dependent with strict zoning and lack of transit oriented development.
@Spido68_the_spectator
@Spido68_the_spectator Год назад
Culs des sacs isn't a bad thing at all. It allows for proper road hierarchy (and less road surface) and more diverse shapes. You can continue dead ending streets by paths (easy). Good zoning makes services just as easy to reach as in grids with good zoning. It's no better, nor worse than a grid in car dependant suburbia. Still no sidewalks, tons of stop signs, commercial clustered onto stroads with no local businesses.
@jasonreed7522
@jasonreed7522 Год назад
Suburbs by definition are just a satellite community to a larger city and this is perfectly fine. American suburbs suffer from being financial insolvent, meaning in the lifecycle of the infrastructure (roads, pipes, ect) the city won't be able to collect enough in taxes to break even on the development. This isn't necessarily bad, as you could charge higher taxes and make them luxury locations, but when 80%+ of a city is R1 its a recipe for bankruptcy. The car dependency is another problem that starts with the humble sidewalk, if a road is clearly "in town" it should have a respectful sidewalk. (Meaning a 2ft sidewalk against the curb 3in from 45+mph traffic doesn't count) you also need to break up the infinite sea of residential with some light comercial like corner stores so that way you can satisfy some of your needs within walking distance.
@nperceived
@nperceived Год назад
As an Australian geography buff, I've always admired the Interstate system whenever I travel to the US. What you mentioned earlier in the video is exactly why Australia's road infrastructure sucks, and why there are no states where you could pass through entirely on freeways or expressways (though NSW is close to it).
@zythr9999
@zythr9999 Год назад
Yet the flip side is air in Australia is cleaner then in the US.
@nperceived
@nperceived Год назад
@@zythr9999 It is true for many places, but surely cities like Adelaide (pop. 1 mil) can do better off with more freeways because right now, it only has 3 (plus the SE Freeway that ends at Adelaide). It's also worth noting that while the few rural freeways are somewhat empty, they do also help prevent collisions with 'roos and other wildlife that wander around during sunrise and sunset.
@jasonreed7522
@jasonreed7522 Год назад
@@nperceived travel within a city should be handled by transit not freeways, but intercity travel should be possible on 2-3 lane each way highways. (But also have a parallel passenger train route) Take it from an American, the Interstates are the worst driving of your life, especially near cities with garbage transit. You don't actually want them near your hometown.
@nperceived
@nperceived Год назад
@@jasonreed7522 I agree that a city's transit should be better handled on public transport, there still should be some. While not all Australian cities lack freeways (Brisbane and Perth have more freeways than they need, especially for their population -- both 2m each), Sydney, Adelaide, and the Gold Coast certainly lack freeways. In contrast, Melbourne has just the right amount, though some of its eastern suburbs lack freeways. It's a real pain to drive say 8 hours from one city to another on high-speed roads or freeways, only to be dumped on local suburban roads when you're nearing your destination.
@Mr-DNA_
@Mr-DNA_ Год назад
Suburban sprawl is not inherently a bad thing in my opinion. What is bad is making it impossible to build anything else than single family homes and to plan cities without including public transit, forcing everyone to drive.
@jasonreed7522
@jasonreed7522 Год назад
Its extra bad when walking and biking aren't even considered when designing these places, 1 house every half acre is definitely a town and needs to have a 3ft sidewalk atleast 2ft back from the road, ideally with large oaks in the median between them. But sprawl actually is inherently bad, the cost to the city to replace the infrastructure at the end of its life in these places is twice the actual tax revenue generated in that same period, its litterally a ponzi scheme aka insane debt with extra steps.

Suburban sprawl isn’t good or bad per se. It just is what it is. The best story I’ve heard about the importance of the interstate system for connecting the nation is the aftermath of the extension of I70 west of Denver to Cove Fort, UT. Prior to the building if I70 there was no direct way from Denver or Grand Junction over to the Sevier Valley in Utah. When the interstate finally opened all of the mayors of the communities met, a few for the first time ever.

'keep right except to pass' isn't exactly so clear in many situations. You have super-pokey slow cars & trucks in the right lane, slightly faster people trying to get around, and even faster trying to push through that.Eventually, you get tired of passing all those cars and changing lanes all the time that you just stay left. Then someone comes up even faster, all mad, flashing lights, because he needs to party with his bros 30 seconds earlier. When you are already going 5-10 over the limit, and some self important d ouche wants to floor it, nah, I'll keep left, just to annoy them.

The Interstate Highway system was created to burn Fossil Fuel, it seems to have little other purpose and only served to remove the drivers who are incapable of actual ability to understand the functions of vehicles from those who do. Interstates created a new system that provided profits to developers who wanted to build new cities from suburbs. The idea is unsustainable and the Congressional effort to discuss infrastructure appropriations, without ever dedicating enough funds to actually make any real difference in the deteriorating structure of America's transportation system, demonstrates the priorities of Government. Representative Government has become simply one of the functions that Wall Street sells......
